This was a very eagerly awaited sequel to the Tomb Raider franchise. Despise the 3 years it took to make it, it flaws a lot. The story is really good and gripping, but has nothing to do with tomb raiding. However, I like the way it reffers to THE LAST REVELATION.
Pros:
Storyline
Character interaction
Graphics
Sound (voicing is perfect and music is great)
locations (paris and prague)
Cons:
Glitchy
No tomb raiding involved (well very little)
short game
slow gameplay
boss and enemies are all lame
too easy
jumping platform to platform is frustrating
Overall, this game is dissapointing. But I respect it because its a tomb raider game. If you are a hardcore fan, go get it. if you want to play a decent third person shooter, wait for Tomb Raider Legend which is out in 2 or 3 months. It'll be worth the wait, trust me!

This game is extremely buggy, and in a few places Lara got stuck in midair, or the game froze. Often, everything slows down like The Matrix Bullet Time but I had the impression that it was not intentional. The worst feature is lack of control over the character. I found myself saving very often around jumps between ledges, because there is no guarantee that she will jump in the direction you tell her, resulting in a lot of Game Over screens.
All that aside, the game looks alright, although some of the accents are laughable.

I'm not a "gamer" perse, I mostly play John Madden. But I got bored with that and decided to jump into the role-playing scene. I played an earilier Tomb Raider back in '99 at a friends and enjoyed, so figured I'd try this one. Overall it's not a bad game...
Like: good scene/background graphics, good voice-overs, a few very challenging parts.
Dislikes: The game slows down when too much is going on; The people could have been better rendered; there are too many bugs that cause you to reload your game; parts that were supposed to be a major challenge I fairly easily beat (only part that really challenged me was "Boaz Returns" - but the "hint/cheat" site I used was a great help; maybe I have no attention span, but I didn't get parts of the story-line - some scenes just didn't seem to be really needed or vital to the story; and I'd have to agree with others the Analog control is a pain at first, but I did get used to it and it wasn't bad but they need to remove the analog use; but the camera views do screw you up sometimes, the camera doesn't always move with her and it gets frustrating and messes up your jumps; I really was hoping for more shooting/fighting but you don't fight/shoot enough to me (not enough enemies/creatures), its mostly just running around and jumping from rock to rock, scaffolding to scaffolding; the ending was kinda anti-climatic (nothing really happenened) - I was disappointed by the ending - but maybe this is typical for Lara games.
(...)Plus after I finish a "role" game I dont want it anymore. A great cheat/hint site for Tomb Raider is - tombraiders.net
I say buy it used, not retail and you'll enjoy it as a way to pass the time for a few weeks. Definitely don't pay full price. I'll buy the next one whenever it comes out (used of course). Later and happy gaming!!

i have been a huge lara croft fan sinse tomb raider 1 in 1996. and since then i own every copy and played every tomb raider game. (i love to play laras mansion in tomb raider 3)
any way angel of darkness was dissapointing, it was nothing that i expected it to be. i thought that lara is finally coming on the ps2 and i thought of how good the graphics would be because it is the first time lara has apeared on the ps2.
the graphics were good, with a mager improvment on tomb raider 1-5! angel of darkness, the charecters do look more realistic that they did in preavious tomb raiders, which i thoght was a huge and excellent improvment. the levels were ok, good graphics but really drab, with no life breathed into them. for example the parisian back streets level could have been mutch better if thair were people walking on the street or going into shops or something like that. and lara could interact with them. The water was hugely dissapointing. when lara dives or jumps into the water, the camera quickly zooms down into the water. Their was no splash whatsoever, or propper water sound as well. very dissapointing. Tomb raider 5 water was amazing, the sound, the look, the rippling water effects it was very realistic.
The way that lara herself looks was really good. i noticed that she is now wearing full make up, which you can tell with the heavey black eyeliner, which really looks good on lara because it brings her eyes to life and makes them stand out more.
She should have opted for a new hair style for her ps2 debut. i think that she should have left her hair down, with a good hair cut from a top salon using ghd hairstraightners!!
but no, she opted for her normal poiny tail!
her outfits are getting more skimpier and look really good on her. Does she wear timberland boots? i think so.
At the end of tomb raider the last rvelation, where did lara end up when the pryamid collapsed? did she fall and land somewhere?
to be honest i still dont know if lara survived that pryamid fall at the end of last revelation.

Actually, you couldn't pay me to play this game again. The control system is horrible. It takes about halfway through the game before you finally get used to it. The game itself is boring. And what they've done is in an effort to make the game appear to be longer, they force you to repeat most things in just about every level. Like you'll make it across the room, get your room prize only to find that you must recross the room the exact same way. After several levels of repeating everything, it makes the game incredibly boring. The story itself really isn't that interesting and by the time I was almost done, I had actually forgotten most of it. There were major plot holes with the alternate character, Kurtis, that you get to control. We never really learn much about him and when he's finally gone, Lara doesn't seem to know or care. I hated most of the levels. And when I finally did get a good one was that was kind of like Resident Evil, it was very, very short. Which brings me to the ending. It's about one to two seconds long. So for all your trouble and stubbornness of finishing the game, you get a short one to two second video clip that's boring. I was not a happy camper with that.
Most of the problems with the game are with the controls and you will die repeatedly, including in the training level, just trying to walk. The entire gameplay is "take a step, die", so you better save after every single step.
The game if full of bugs and it repeatedly froze up on me numberous times. There were even bugs in the levels where Lara wouldn't pull up when she was supposed to on a platform. I had a severe bug in the Biofacility where the sharkthing wouldn't eat the food no matter what I did, causing me to have to level skip to finish the level. Due to the bugs, there's a very good chance you won't be able to finish this game without using cheats.
Graphically, the game is very pretty. The voice acting wasn't bad, what little you get of it. The soundtrack was kind of blah and you really don't even notice it much.
I wouldn't recommend this game to a new Tomb Raider fan. And only the most stubborn TR fan will finish it. I didn't really enjoy most of it and only kept playing because I had bought it and wanted to at least get my money's worth out of it somehow. But it's not worth any amount of money. If you're a diehard TR fan, give it a try, but if you really aren't that into it, skip this awful title.
Enjoyed this game, no matter what everyone else said.

[...] I can only share my personal experience and tell you that I really enjoyed this game.
The graphics are good, both characters and environment. Maybe Lara doesn't look quite realistic, but that's because her design follows the original. It's now more detailed and looks better.
A very interesting new feature is Lara's interaction with other characters. Now you can choose between different answers and thus obtain different reactions that determine the game's development.
In my opinion, the only legitimate complain against the game is the new analog control. However, the game is designed to let you get used to it before the hard part of the game begins.
Any difficulty you may have in understanding the new control system shall be compensated, at least in my opinion, with some of Lara's new moves. She can now sneak behind her enemies' backs and even engage in hand-to-hand combat if needed. This is no Mortal Kombat though, so don't expect any kind of super-special-move or devastating-attack.
The reason why I'm not rating this game with five stars is that some change of scenarios don't make much sense. Can't tell you much more without spoiling the story. Sorry.
All in all, I recommend this game, especially to all TR fans.

I'm a huge fan of the TR series, and have been playing them since TR2. So, it was with much anticipation that I bought TR_AOD. I brought it home, threw it in the PS2 and expected to be blown away. Instead, I was frustrated and disappointed.
The controls are completely different, and Lara isn't very responsive. The game looks better than any of the previous games, but it doesn't compare to other modern console games. Broken hearted, I set the game aside before finishing the training level. It took a repeat viewing of the second movie to prompt me to pick the game back up. I just finished it, and it earns a solid 2.25 on a 5 point scale from me.
Specific complaints:
Unresponsive controls, bad camera angles, LOTS of BUGS, very linear levels, too easy (I finished with 12 100% Med packs and hundreds of rounds of ammo)
The positives:
Sound is okay, graphics are decent, the new (stealth) moves are cool
Purchase at your own peril...

The first time I played this new revamped version of the great Tomb Raider series, I hated, hated, HATED the new controls! They were horrifically bad. This game feels like it wasn't even finished. You can't alter the controls set up (at least on the game console version), there are bugs GALORE, and some options to try and make the game more realistic like not being able to hang off ledges as long as you want were just lamer than lame.
So I threw the game aside, disgusted, depressed, thinking YET ANOTHER great video game series had been ruined. And going by the lackluster sales of Angel of Darkness it appears I was right.
But I went back months later and tried again. And after struggling through the first few levels I was able to get the hang of the controls. And this coming from someone who PASSIONATELY hated them! The game is one the weakest in the series. There are dumb new features galore, like having conversations with AI's and choosing your verbal responses. Ho-hum. This is the most exciting thing the Tomb Raider programmers can come up with? Spare me. Just show us some more good old fashioned Tomb Raider puzzles to solve and bad guys to kill!
The hand to hand combat stuff is cool though and long overdue. Lots of levels are dull and uninteresting though. But it's still halfway decent. It just good have been so much more exciting. The first three Tomb Raider games are still the best. Nothing in this game can match the excitement of dangling over some of those cliffs in the first Tomb Raiders! Still it isn't all bad. But it could have been a million times better. They held the release date back so long and the game STILL is filled with bugs? Not cool. Just hold it back another few months to get it all fixed next time. I'd rather wait a long time than have a lackluster Tomb Raider experience. Ciao!

I love all the Tombraider games but this has to be the worst one graphically. It did offer some nuances but it was so slow loading that I finally got so frustrated with it - I quit.

I just can't believe it. How could a Tomb Raider game turn out so terrible?
The other reviews have said stuff about how bad the controls are and how there are loads of bugs. It's all true, but it gets worse.
The programmers seem to have had trouble working out how to make the game challenging. What did they come up with in the end ... make Lara jump lots.
They know that it's hard to jump where you want to so they put you in loads of positions where you have to reach tiny targets that are in the middle distance. None of the puzzles are hard to work out, so this game is just about how much patience you have.
This game is going back to the store...
