Awfull controls, full of bugs, OK graphics, nice storyline. Shame because it could be so much better...
A good try that slightly falls short.

Time for a true review of this game. In Tomb Raider AoD, you take on the role as Lara Croft, once again. An entertaining game from the start, I must say that this game has run almost completely on hype from the beginning. PEOPLE, WHEN U START PLAYING THIS GAME, DO NOT EXPECT WHAT YOU HEAR. From what I have read in previews from countless magazines, this game was supposed to challange the likes of Metal Gear Solid 2 and Resident Evil. This is NOT true. The stealth part of this game has little to no effect on gameplay. True, you can sneek around in stealth position if you want to, but in most curcumstances, you will only waste time in places where you could just shoot enemies and lose them for good. Also, this game was expected to be a new beginning. Here are the "new features" *you can now talk to others using dialouge that you choose *you wear different clothes *you now have limited strenght in climing, pushing boxes, and other things that in the earlier games would have been no problem. To be perfectly fair, the game does have great new flair, as there is now a darker atmoshpere no matter where you go. Even a church in Paris feels erily evil. The graphics are fairly good, but not much more. Characters, while exciting to see, are somewhat bland in appearance; though the environments are simply beautiful (though rather linear). The sound expirience is one that you cannot find in most other games; the orchestra that plays give the meaning of atmosphere a new sound. Tomb raider franchise has never been known for responsive controls, so dont expect them. They do work fine, and you will get used to them after about an hour (aproximately 3 levels for me). So will you have fun while playing this game? For me, the answer was yes. I enjoyed The Last Revelation far more than most people did, so this game was right up my alley. The point I would like to make is that those people looking for something new may be disapointed. The gameplay still remains with puzzles--some puzzles more challenging than others. You WILL DIE VERY OFTEN, and you will therefore learn to save after every completed puzzle. The graphics have a downside as just when things get truly beautiful, there is slowdown that reminds you this is only a game. The one thing that always keep nagging at me about this game is that there seems to be a spark missing from the earlier games. Perhaps that lack of Egyptian tombs? This remains unknown to me. To be fair, I give the game 3 stars. The game is for those who, frankly, dont want a change from older tomb raider games, and dont care playing for the story line more than for the gameplay. Give this game a weekend rental before you buy.
BUY INDIANA JONES INSTEAD!

Tomb Raider is cool, but way too short and too easy. I beat it in 4 days, and it took me a month to beat Last Revelation. Buy Indiana Jones and the Emporers Tomb instead......... it's what Tomb Raider SHOULD BE.
A HUGE Letdown

First of all, I'd like to warn people to rent this game. DO NOT buy it. There is a very good chance you will be dissapointed if you do buy it (luckily, I rented it). I can still remember when Eidos was developing this game. They stated in interviews that this game would 'take the franchise in a new direction'. Well, this game did do that...unfortunately, it was the wrong direction. Tomb Raider: AOD seems like the most unfinished game I've ever played. It's almost as if the creators figured that they'd ruined it enough so they just threw it on the shelves hoping that no one would notice the MAJOR (and I do mean major) flaws:
1. The controls are TERRIBLE! When you push forward on the analog stick, it takes Lara at least a second before she starts moving. I didn't know if it was possible, but these controls are even worse than the original Tomb Raider games.
2. At certain places the game will slow down. This gets to be quite annoying. We have games with great graphics such as GTA: Vice City or MGS 2, which have NO slow downs...and yet some how, the creators of AOD couldn't find the time to fix this problem in the game.
3. Sometimes, the game will freeze, forcing you to restart your PS2.
4. The camera can become very annoying, as you constantly have to adjust it.
These are just a few of the many flaws in this game. The story, which consists of Lara being framed for a murder she didn't commit, is quite good, but it's not worth playing this game to see the story.
Tomb Raider: The Angel of Darkness had great potential, and you can see it while playing the game. Unfortunately, the game was rushed out (probably to help advertise the new movie) leaving all these terrible flaws and control problems in the game. If only Eidos had been a bit more patient, and worked harder to improve these errors, this game might have been really good.
It's not the best, but you have to get it.

Those of us in the know, will buy this game because we must; we are driven to continue the adventure. While this game does have new adventures, it also has new problems. Lara is hard to control in many situations; just wait until you try to turn around on stairs. Lots of code seems to be missing so floors, walls, and characters are missing parts or are see-through. While I'm a bit disappointed in the controls and in some of the villians and gameplay, I am glad it is here and will play several times through.
A refreshing breath of air for the constant musty tombs...

Tomb Raider: The Angel of Darkness, has a wonderful storyline that takes us away from the Tombs of ancient civilizations and brings us to the sinister underbelly of Lara's world that though she disdains, must experience nonetheless. Even Indiana Jones had to pull himself away from swashbuckling "archeology" to teach at a University and engage with people in a normal situation. This game displays the turbulent lifestyle one who robs tombs for a living must undergo on a daily basis, because what you stole could just as easily be stolen from you.
Although, I've read many reviews slamming the controls for the game, I didn't have any difficulty controlling Lara after a few minutes. I haven't experienced any delay in excecuting the various actions and though there are bugs in the system, to tell you truth, isn't anything I haven't experienced before with earlier incarnations of Tomb Raider (particularly Tomb Raider II).
In the end, this is a very engaging and entertaining game that will keep you occupied for hours.

After seeing thousands of bogus reviews for this title, I decided to see for myself. It is Tomb Raider after all, and I've been a fan since the first one in 1996. Lara is a bit hard to control here but she's easy to get used to. The first level was a breeze (although I had to save a LOT) but the second was fristrating beyond measure. 2 weeks later and I'm past. YES!
Combat here is pretty solid. Weapons function pretty well and hand-to-hand combat is fast, brutal and effective. The stealth can be a bit awkward but you'll get used to it. Exploration is a bit pointless as there are no people in Paris (a feature cut out) and the streets are poorly rendered. There are no secrets, a LOT of loading screens and Lara is pretty slow. I always try to get to the next level as fast as possible.
But seriously, this game is SCARY! In one of the levels, a man is lying on a bench, hideously mutated and disfigured. He grunts, gags and you can hear the flesh ripping. And one of the levels features newbie Kurtis in a sanitarium surrounded by mutated humans. Everything is in ruins, loads of corpses... terrible! But it's not all dark and grim. Le Serpent Rouge for example, is a bright, neon night club with truly terrific techno music!
Speaking of the music, it's kind of a mix metween classic TR tunes and orchestra. The main theme is one of the most beautiful, relaxing tunes ever to feature in a video game.
All in all, TRAOD is pretty solid. It's long, hard and scary. Unlike the more recent Legend. Buy this!

OK, I'll admit. Out of thise whole series of games, this is the first one I've played. And many thanks to my good friend for letting me borrow this, because if I had bought this game, I would have felt that I had been ripped off, and having had opened it, wouldn't get all of my money back.
First off, Lara. In the movies, she seems to have a lot of athletic ability, but in this game, she either has severe arthritis or is somehow made of wood. In the beginning of this game, she's running from the police. Sprinting, in fact, IN THE CUT-SCENES. When you're controlling her, she's desperately fleeing from the police at a sort of shag-jog. I've seen inept police officers in video games, but in this game, they know where she is, they're right behind her as she enters an abandoned building, yet as soon as she hits the second floor TAKING ONE STAIR AT A TIME, she's suddenly lost them. Back to Lara. In this building, she shoulders her way through one door, and announces she's feeling stronger. For some unexplained reason, we have to take her back down one flight of stairs, back toward the police, and as she she tries to open another door, tells us that it's locked, and she needs a key. Come on, Lara. You've busted down one door, are feeling stronger because of it, for crimony's sake, bust down this one. But no. She won't.
Second, the controls. Gads, what a mess. If Lara's facing away from something, say a ladder, and you direct her to turn around, it takes a second for the game to realize what you want, and there's a minute pause before she actually moves. If you want to jump from one ledge to another, and there's no way to jump completely across, you have to take your thumb off the jump button and press yet another one while she's in mid-air to grab onto the ledge. I'm an experienced gamer, playing since I was a teenager in the mid-'80s, but switching buttons in that short a time is difficult for me to do. Needless to say, she fell from a great height a lot, and died. If I haven't saved before the jump, I have to start from my save point and go all the way to that jump, just to see her fall again. Frustrating. Most game characters I have played(and I have played a great deal), automatically grab on so I don't have to press a separate button. Also, most games I have played have a relatively short sequence of commands to enter in order to save a game state. This game's was abnormally long and involved. Also, if I pick up a health pack in other games, my health level is automatically raised. In this game, it's like you have to physically nurse Lara back to health yourself in a subscreen where you have to select what you want to use, see what percentage it raises the health bar, and then use it. I hated doing that. Why can't it be done automatically?
Later in the game, I have to interview a number of people, and select my responses and questions carefully. I often messed up, and couldn't see where I went wrong, or remember what I had selected previously in the myriad of choice points during the conversation. That was maddening, and done far too often.
And for pete's sake, when is she going to get out of the slums of Paris and do some tomb raiding? I may have to just stop the game here and give it back to my friend.
If Angel of Darkness is an example of the way all the other Tomb Raider games are programmed and played, I'm sure not going to be buying them.

Before you continue any farther in this review, ask your self this quick question: Which of these are your more likely to say?
1. I feel determined.
2. Frusteration hurts.
If you chose answer #2, you should quit reading this review right now, and look for a better game. If you chose answer #1 you probably have the determination to play through this game, and if you do, you'll probably appreciate the stroy. That's this game's redeming quality. The story twists, turns, and keeps you thoroughly entertained. If you have patience, the story will probably keep you hooked. If not this game is deffenilty not for you.
The controlls are harsh. Lara doesn't start running untill she is finished with her warm up walk. This makes her slow, and clunky. She litterly moves like she is overweight. She has various jumps which she can preform, but they make you press the analog stick exactly in the right direction to preform. Since they are not necassary, I suggest staying away from them. Clunky movements are bad in any game, but especially one that requires you to do as much platforming as this one. You'll save frequently, but luckily you can whenever you want durring the missions via the pause menue. This helps very much, as Lara will be constantly be falling. Into pits, icky green gook, pavement, you name it. If it's possible to die in, Lara will do it.
As if Lara isn't bad enough, somewhere in the middle of the game you will take controll of a man named Kurtis Trent. His movements are even clunkier than Lara's, if that's even possible. There are only a few levels that require you to be Kurtis though.
This game takes some serious getting used to, but is rewarding if you can take the time. I personally enjoyed this game. I had a friend over not too long ago who I let play this game however. About 15 minutes into the game, her exact words were, "Frusteration hurts." If you can make it past the akward and frusteration first half, you will probably enjoy this game as I did. If you are expecting to jump into a game and have a ball, this isn't the game for you. That said, think about this before you buy, and maybe rent first.
