Not a "Myst"-ifying as the First Two

If you like this type of game, and you enjoyed Myst and Riven, the sequel "Exile" just might be worth it. The graphics are just as beautiful in places; the "villain" is mesmerizing. I like the new way of 360' rotation that has been brilliantly integrated into gameplay. Unfortunately, the new creators are worse writers than the originals and even worse puzzle creators. I actually solved one puzzle by accident, which would never have happened with the two original Myst games. I suggest you buy it only if you are a true Myst fan, but don't be too disappointed if it doesn't live up to the previous two games.
Wish it never ends

Amazing scenery. Logical puzzles. Nice storyline.
The universe: This game makes me wish for some way to make the field of vision wider than the limited computer display. I just can't wait to pan around at each location. The worlds are so wonderful, awe-inspiring. I wish the graphics were rendered with even better resolution and for a way to zoom in. But, as with any simulated environment, there is always room for improved fidelity. To sum up: very nice graphics. And the sounds are top of the line. They fit in well at each environment and add to the ambience nicely.
The gameplay: It is nice that you can take your time and not worry about timing something or making a deadline. When you realize that, you can truly enjoy all the sights and sounds and advance the events at your own pace. As the cursor changes to show you locations you can manipulate, it is a bit strange it does not show the locations you can move to. But thankfully most of the places you can go are evident, certainly the critical ones anyway.
The puzzles: All puzzles are logical, you can deduct what you have to do, either on site or from information you have encountered at some point, and just touching all you can and see what happens. The difficulty level is, in my opinion, middle grade: not impossible, but not really fly-through easy either.
The storyline: This is well paced. I did not like it in Myst or Riven that you were presented with long(ish) books at once, and you had to endure reading through a lot of text in fear of missing some clue. In Exile the story is presented a bit more gradually. And it is nicely explanatory in the sense that you learn why the worlds and your journey is like it is.
Acting: Good quality acting all the way. At some points maybe a bit exaggerated, but well done anyway.
Summary: Well worth the money. I recommend you buy the Myst trilogy if you do not have the prequels, Myst and Riven. It is not much more expensive, and you can enjoy the complete history of the universe and events, and appreciate the development of features in each sequel.
Myst 3...easier...or are we just getting smarter?

I love this game. It is beautiful. I couldn't shut it off...everyone is saying that the puzzles are easier than before (remember that there was a lack of hint sites for Myst and Riven...there were some but not like the billion out there for Myst 3...also, most of us have played Myst and Riven and know what to do...when I first got the original Myst, I was 100% lost...I accomplished nothing for 2 days and was ready to give up...it was not so for Riven...while Riven was harder, I at least knew what needed to be done).
This game offers about a week of serious puzzle solving but is still worth the 40 bucks even if you just use it to get some gorgeous screen shots for your wallpaper/background image.
disappointed

I played Myst, the first edition on my Mac and was fascinated: with half a brain and some technical talent you can find the solutions to all problems. It totally absorbed me to the point that I had withdrawal symptoms when I finished. I even bought the Myst screensaver. Riven really put me down a notch. The solutions were not at all evident and some a little devious. I could not have finished it without some hints from a website, but the visual and sound effects were somewhat better than in Myst. I looked forward impatiently to Myst3-Exile, eagerly reading all the pre-publication hype. This game is a mixed bag: The images are very good , the sound did not impress me.I completed J'Nanin in reasonable time. Some solutions were or should have been obvious, but others I do not know how I would have found without help.So I managed to get to the starting points for the three other islands. In Voltaic the first problems began: In several places the manipulation by the cursor turned into a hand, do not work. I had to restart from earlier points many times.and now am stuck for good in one place. There is not enough room to save all the positions you want. Often the Mac arrow-shaped system cursor appears in addition to the game cursor and requires some switching back and forth to get rid of. From an exciting entertainment it has suddenly become a chore and I would return it if I could. But let's see what the tech support has to say after the holiday. I read on the players' website that some people with Windows have even more trouble. Obviously the need to complete and ship out has cut into testing time.
You've got to play this--it's the BEST!

This game is superb! We are about halfway through I'd guess, and we are enthralled, charmed, and delighted. We have had no technical problems at all. The puzzles are just right. And the pay-off for "solving a world" is outstanding. My husband and I sat there with our jaws agape, mouthing "Wooowwwww," like a kid watching fireworks for the first time, as we finished one of the worlds. This is a MUST HAVE for anyone who likes this type of game. Nothing but "Obsidian" comes close.
not as good as myst or riven

Exile was a lot of fun and IS BETTER than most other adventure games, but doesn't live up to the standards set by myst or riven.
The good:
1> The interface. Much better than myst or riven. Much more imersive. Fun to look around.
2> Localized puzzles. Don't have to trek back and forth endlessly between locations to solve puzzles.
3> Acting: The "bad guy" is good.
4> Graphics and animations. NOT ALL GOOD, but some very cool looking stuff.
The bad:
1> To easy. This game seems to have been dumbed down quite a bit. Maybe I am just getting better at myst type games, but I think the puzzles were too easy.
2> Acting: Atrus (..) bad.
3> Short and Small: The game as a whole and the ages (levels) felt small.
The Ugly:
1> Costumes and props. Some were OK but a lot looked pretty cheesey (especially the clearly plastic fred flinstonesque hammer wielded by Saavedro in the last level - his outfit was pretty bad on that level also)
2> Graphics. OK, some graphics were great (all the CG animations were impressive), but there was some pretty ugly stuff too.
Final thoughts.
Buy this game anyway, especially if you played previous games - just manage your expectations and have fun with it. If there was no myst or riven I would give this game 5 stars because it is clearly superior to any other adventure game out there today.
Beautiful, captivating, and all around spectacular.

This game has it all: a terrific plot, unparalelled graphics, superb acting, fun and mind bending puzzles. Beyond that even, Myst 3 introduces a new level of gaming that borders on transcendental. The imagery and video sequences are haunting. I finished this game two days ago and am still thinking about it. It is great fun to play, and has a real message about the decisions we make in life.
***Knock Knock**** You don't need a 3D accelerator for this

This game was great!!!!!!!! I loved the new puzzles and the outcome this time got me. While with the first two games, I made the right chose, this one got me. I hope Myst 4 is in the works. It took me 4 days to complete the game, and I wish it could have gone on. Playing a Myst game is like reading, I can leave the real world for a while, and leave my troubles behind. Great stress reducer.
