Myst III Exile is Awesome!

I've just started playing MYST III and it is a great game. The visuals are awesome. I'm using a Dell 850 with 512 meg of RAM and a TNT card with 32 meg of video RAM and it works flawlessly. The 3D effect is great and it is visually beautiful. One other great feature is that you can load all four CD's on your hard drive (if you have a couple of Gigs handy!)for seamless action. Not an adventure game, but still a great way to spend a rainy Memorial Day Weekend!

Best of the series

I am still in the process of playing the game, but it is an incredible game so far. Far superior to Riven graphically and has an engrossing storyline, very difficult challenging puzzles. It's really a spectacular game. I haven't had one single problem running it at all. Maybe you people that have had the problems should quit whining and buy a real video card like the Riva tnt 2 like mine and not the cheap low end cards like SB and Voodoo cards, which rarely work right on newer games. Anyway get this game ASAP! It's worth every penny! Oh and I agree with a few of the posters in that the ones who say this game was too easy and that they finished it in a day or so? They are definitely using a walkthrough. This game is hard, but not so hard that you get frustrated and give up. Excellent game!!

Excellent Game!!!

This is an excellent sequel to Myst and Riven. This game has an optional 3-D support interface which enables the user to play the game the same way the first two were or in the "3-D" mode that enables 360° rotation.

With many new things to explore and do this is sure to be even more sucessful than the original.

Myst fans will have no problems enjoying this.

I have no Idea what those people are talking about........

Why people say the game isn't that great I have no Idea about. It has a few cons, but the pros certainly make up for it. Here are the cons first: When the people are talking to you when it's not in a movie, the sound is a bit off sync. The moving things that are not part of a movie are also a bit blurry but still pretty good. The game is a bit short (me and my brother beat it in 3 days, totaling up to about 12 hours). Ok, here are the pros: the graphics are crisp and detailed (like all myst series games are), the storyline is good, the puzzles are not too hard but not too easy either, and it also has multiple endings. You can also look 360 degrees after every step you take. Let me add a few comments and problems before you buy this game, though. If you want to have the game so that you don't need to switch between the 4 cd's all the time, you have to install the whole thing, which is about 2 gigabytes! I know computers now can store a lot, but that still is a ton! The second thing is that if you have a voodoo 2 or 3 like I have, it can't support 32 bit 3-d, and you have to play the game in software mode instead of direct 3-d, and it makes your game a bit slower and choppy at some times. But if you don't have those two cards, and you have a good graphics card, then your pretty well off with this game. You don't even need a fast processor either. So if you have the stuff for this game, and you love good gaming, buy this game NOW!

Great Sequel

When my daughter invited me to play Myst 3 with her I was pretty skeptical, but after a few minutes was entirely hooked. Soon my wife joined us and we have spent many days together wending our way through this delightful environment. Not being a hardcore gamer, the puzzles would have been way too time consuming for me. My daughter seemed challenged by them without being overwhelmed and solved them within a reasonable time limit (I don't like to spend days solving a puzzle. I'm more interested in the overall experience). The ample visual and aural clues not only help solve the puzzles but tell an interesting story. The highest praise I can give is that when the game is complete, I look forward to playing the game again.

Great game

This game is wonderful, especially at the bargain prices you can get it nowadays. I'm about a 1/3rd of the way through, and the graphics are great and the puzzles are challenging. Some mention that this game isn't fully-3D, but it would be a disservice to this game to make a quake-like engine for it. I would recommend glancing at a walkthrough if you get stuck somewhere for more than an hour (But don't keep following it).

Really Cool Game

You begin when you meet with Cathrine and Atrus. This guy suddenly appears and steals the linking book to Atrus' new world. YOu have to go get it back. You start on J'nanin. From there you can choose to link to the islands of Amatera, Voltaic, or Edanna. Voltaic follows the traditional machine-driven portion in every game in this series. This was the last Island I completed and it was probably my hardest. Amatera is the Island of these astounding man-made phenomenas. Thats the only way I know how to explain them. You can't just describe it, you gotta see it. I liked that Island the most until I got to Edanna. This is nature like you've never seen it before. It was the most amazing thing I have seen from an adventure game yet. YOu almost wish it was real. Once all islands are completed your not done yet. You have to visit the home world of this crazy guy who stole atrus's new world, N'Rauyan. Be careful though. There is more than one oppurtunity to die if you don't do it right.

Anyway, this game is awesome. I think its harder than Myst but easier than Riven. I did not use a strategy guide so its not impossible.

pretty easy. pretty and easy

over in 4 days on my own, no hints. now to wait another 4 years for the next one. atrus once again is really indebted to me. maybe he will pay back in the next game. the pictures in exile are stunning, but beautiful graphics do not a good game make. the only stumper i found was in the voltaic age in the room with the rivenese numbers. it was hard only because it was late at night; solved it first thing in the am. seriously, though, i enjoyed every minute, but myst and riven are more satisfying games, giving a greater sense of accomplishment. hence, only 4 stars for exile. incidentally, it ran without a hitch on my imac. for a game thats harder, but with less spectacular scenery, try riddle of the sphinx. cheap too.

Beautiful visuals, but lacking in content

I picked up Myst III on a Saturday and had finished the game by the following Monday. Maybe I'm smarter than I was when I spent weeks stuck in Riven, or maybe the puzzles are just simpler than the previous Myst games, but this game just didn't last very long at all.

To be fair, it was fun while it lasted. The puzzles are more logical this time around, and I never encountered the frustrating scenario of completely not understanding what I was supposed to do. The graphics are great (I've got a speedy little setup that ran the game flawlessly). Of course, the acting was typical game-cheese (even Brad Dourif is terrible), but since most of these games are spent wandering alone, it's no big deal.

I'd recommend this game now that it can be found ..., but it's really nothing special, just a short, fun diversion.

Overall, an enjoyable experience.

First off, let me say that it would be hard to come up with a game that was better than Riven. Therefore, I'm not going to compare "Myst 3: Exile" to Riven. That being said, Exile is excellent on scenery and good on story. The 360 degree view is a definite accomplishment which enhances the beautiful scenary.

The puzzles in the game are clever and challenging. Other reviews complain that they are puzzles, just for puzzles sake. However, I found that most of them tie in to the story rather well. The ones that don't are still fun to figure out.

As far as story line goes, the villain in the game is an interesting touch. He is a menacing character throughout, but as the story unfolds you understand more about him. The rest of the story develops as you link to the different worlds and solve the puzzles. One tip I would give is to read the journals that you find in the game and be familiar with them (as with all the Myst games). While it is not crucial to memorize them, browse through them every so often. That way, if you get stuck at a certain point you will know where to go for hints.

Overall, I would give this game a B+. The graphics are outstanding and the story is better than decent. I definitely felt satisfied after putting in the hours trying to solve the game.
