Really good but extremely hard

I love STAR WARS games and couldn't wait for this one. It's a cool game but not without some drawbacks.

NOTE: The game starts off as an FPS. Not until around the 7th level do you get the lightsaber and the Force. When you ignite the saber, you go into 3rd person mode.

DIFFICULTY: I'm starting with this, because this stands out the most. This game is TOUGH! I defy anyone to play through this game without consulting someone for help. I knew I was in trouble when I got stuck on the first stage! And I played the original DARK FORCES. JEDI OUTCAST consists of complicated map areas, hard puzzles, things you might not think to do, and enemies that can drain your energy quickly.

GRAPHICS: I thought they were quite good. Familiar planets is a nice touch. Has a realistic SW feel. The frame-rate is good.

SOUND: A little disappointing, particularly with regard to the lightsaber sound effect. It doesn't have half the punch that it did in OBI-WAN. The music editing is very choppy and is not done very well. Blasters sound good.

CONTROL: The default control is awful, but you can customize it to make it a lot better. Using R for the saber leads to not quite as precise lightsaber movements, but you can get used to that. You can deflect blasts with the lightsaber (and it looks awesome) but they never go back and hit the enemy! The Force is awkward to use.

MULTIPLAYER: Lots of cool places to fight (Death Star, Bespin, etc.) and you can even be a stormtrooper and have a lightsaber!

If Lucasarts took the difficulty, Force usability, lightsaber controls, sound effects, and enjoyability of OBI-WAN, with the graphics and animation of JEDI OUTCAST, we'd get one truly amazing XBOX game.

I have to say this one more time: This is game is EXTREMELY DIFFICULT! It takes the fun out of it since it is so frustrating. Still, it's worth checking out.

Puzzling.

I blame myself for not doing the research on this one... I had no idea that this was a game that relies so heavily on puzzles. You should, though.
The game is incredibly challenging, even if you weren't fighting storm troopers around every corner it would be a challenge. Every stage is loaded with a heap of buttons, jumps, faith drops, risks, hidden doors, crawl spaces, and ledges you must discover in order to work your way towards the end of the level. This game is not for somebody who is looking only to weild a lightsaber, Obi-wan is a great game for that. This game requires a certain level of cleverness and thought to get through and individual levels could take an hour or more to "solve."
The multiplayer is fun as well, play with up to eight players with system link (though it boggles me why they would not enable XBOX Live play), in which you get to customize your force powers and weapon uses.
The graphics are somewhat out-dated, I am supposing that the characters were basically copies from the PC version of the game. Overall, I would reccomend this game if you have quite a bit of time on your hands and if you are especially patient with games.
And we mustn't foget the ever important lightsaber factor. Though the saber controls are not as tight as in Obi-wan, you still get a lightsaber for crying out loud, and you get to use the force. As far as Star Wars games goes, this is a pretty good one. Again, difficult but good.

Action Packed!!!

My computer was to slow to play it. So I had to wait till it came out on Xbox. I had high hopes for this game and it did not let me down. The first two levels were kinda dull for me because I wanted to use a lightsaber. But after the first two levels it was granted and the game shined differently in my eyes. The gameplay after that point was action packed and I can say I never thought to brandish a gun ever again. From your first lightsaber dual up to the secret stage of the game, I have enjoyed the gameplay experience. I even find myself returning to the jedi action once and a while to slaughter stormtroopers and take in some of the big environments. If it wasn't for certain levels were I was constantly plummeting to my death I would have gave it five stars. I'm not a big Star Wars freak but just buy this game if you like the movies, it won't let you down.

the first review of the game after it was actually released

why oh why do people write reviews for games that haven't been released? first off i suppose i should let everyone know that any reviews written about this game before nov. 21 2002 should be ignored for the most part. one example of where this is true, the reviewer "lik way chan" said that the xbox version would have no dismemberment, i assure you it does. so don't base a review of a game on something you heard. anyway on with the review. this is indeed one of the best star wars games i've played. the controlling is different from Obi Wan (which i look at now and wonder...why?) the saber control is different too, but i liked the saber control in obi wan. the force powers are great (push pull jump speed grip lightning and heal) though its a pain to have to cycle through them. graphics are amazing, the storyline is great. though it seems you wait too long before you get your saber and force powers, so stick with it! the multiplayer is great too, lots of other force powers offered, ie force drain, force seeing and force rage. so apart from a few minor flaws, this game is flat out awesome, even if your not a star wars fan, this is still a great game.

Great star wars title!

This is a great game for any skilled star wars game freak. The graphics are pretty good and the gameplay is very fun and challenging don't listen to the negative reviews claiming the game is to hard, the people who claim it's to hard are just weak at video games granted the game can frustrate but it never get's to the point where you want to throw the game out the window. This is a good game and I highly recomend it to and star wars fan. p.s. don't buy jedi academy that game is horrible! what a shame to ruin the series like that!

Let's look at the game for what it really is...

Alright, you've read how incredible this game is, and you've seen how many people love it. I never post anything to delibrately flame anything, but this game needs to be reviewed from a non-biased opinion.

Let's start with the story:
The story is strong, and well laid out. There really are no reasons to complain about it. In fact, it is the story that holds the gamer in his/her seat.

Graphics
Don't believe what you've read. Check the screenshots on the item info page. The backgrounds and character models are reminiscent of the PSX. The textures on virtually everything get grainy and pixellated even from a distance. The light effects are laughable as well. There is no burst of light in a dark room when weapons are fired. If the graphics alone aren't a total disappointment, watch out for severe frame rate drops. The most frequent cause of frame rate drops (slow motion game play) is the presence of too many highly detailed objects on the screen at once. How a game with very little detail can drop into slow-mo is simply beyond me. When compared to past Star Wars games on Xbox, graphically, this one is garbage.

Sound:
Maybe the bad sound was due to a scratched rental game, or a dirty one at that, but from what I've heard, I'd much rather turn my stereo on than listen to the background music and voice acting. The acting is bad at best. There is such a lack of emotion with every word. They might as well have just left the voices to subtitles. As for the music, please, I almost fell asleep. It is patchy and quiet. One second, you'll hear a song that reminds you of the good old days, when Darth Vader was the villian of villians. Then, in a split second, the music mutes to almost in-audibility, and changes to something else, or shuts off entirely. All in all, the sound is shamefull.

Controls:
I can't even begin to tell you of the aggrivation the control scheme brings. Imagine yourself in a fight, completely surrounded by enemies, you blaster runs out of ammo, and you're trying to run for cover. At the same time, you want to take out another weapon. Too bad for you, both of these functions (moving, weapon select) are done with the left thumb. Unless you have an extra finger, use your right hand, or can use the force in real life, you'll have to choose one action or the other. To make things a little more challenging, the controller isn't as responsive to your fingers as you are to the action. For example, one second your swinging your light saber at the enemy, he side steps, you move the joystick to compensate, but you character doesn't move. This causes much frustration and anger in the later levels of the game. The control scheme can be summed up in one word... Disgusting!

Game options:
This is the only area the game excells. The extensive multiplayer options are the only reason I didn't return the game to the video store the same day as I brought it home. You can customise your character to your liking. You can change the color of their light saber, personalize them to your playing style (lightsaber prone, force prone, etc...) or even make them supporters of the light or dark side of the force. This, in my opinion is the only reason to play the game.

It all comes down to how well this game performs and sadly, it does not perform well. On a scale from 1-10, I give it a 4. I usually love the Star Wars games, but this one will never be on my owned rack. My suggestion, put it on your wishlist, rent it, play it first, the buy it or remove it from your list accordingly. Thank you, and I hope I helped you make up your mind.

The Ultimate Star Wars Game!

Early on in the game you use a pistol and rifle and take down some stormtroopers for the New Republic as you explore their base, with no force powers. But events make a turn for the worse and you go to Luke and request for your lightsaber back. Then you begin to discover force powers as you search out the dark Jedi/killer of your girlfriend for the rest of the game. With amazing graphics and increddible duels, this game is simply magnificent. Plus the multiplayer is awesome (especially when you play CTF and give the other team a boat load of Storm Troopers you and your friend being rebels with one bot helping you against twenty or so Stormtroopers makes the game a game you'll never want to trade in! Plus the duels are fun to play again and again. I would have five stars but the game does have two or three puzzles that are quite difficult. All in all a great game that any StarWars fan must own, any shooter fan really has to have, and if you like both, oooh you need it really bad!

Good Idea, Bad Execution

I had this game on the PC (decent) and looked forward to the XBox version to utilize my HDTV set and moderately elaborate home theater.

This game is disappointing.
The graphics are fair.
The sound is absolutely terrible. This was the straw that made me return this rental after the 1st day. I wanted to play it, but this was simply too distracting (seriously, I am not nit-picking). There is no panning from front to back, when moving around (expecting the sound to flow from speaker to speaker as it does in many other good games (Ghost Recon, Splinter Cell, Halo, Fatal Frame...) It is in one speaker and then suddenly chopped off and placed in another. I cannot believe how poorly done the in-game DD5.1 was done.

Obviously I enjoy SW and the like, but this game is missing a lot of polish.

Fantastic Mulit-player/TERRIBLE Single-player

I think this game needs a few more unbiased reviews because it certainly has its flaws. While the graphics and sound are okay for the most part, the quality of the cutscenes is abysmal. I found the single-player game to be extremely frustrating. The most annoying issue is that, while you would like to play as a Jedi and roll in with your lightsabre and put the hurt on, the damage model of enemy weapons and the level design too often leave you battling for inches. Likewise, puzzle solutions didn't seem to be intuitive or natural. To top it off, the menuing is bad so trying to save your game quickly between attempts is annoyingly complex. That said, the multiplayer is FANTASTIC. It's amazingly satisfying to go head-to-head in a fully realized Jedi duel. It's a shame that it's limited to two players. So, if you do a lot of multi-player gaming pick this up for sure. Otherwise, I'd recommend you rent it to check it out beforehand and plan to consult a walkthrough frequently.

An excellent Star Wars game

Star Wars: Jedi Knight II - Jedi Outcast. The third game in the Star Wars Dark Forces series.

INTRODUCTION:
I've pretty much always been a fan of Star Wars, and as you may have guessed, I'm a fan of many of the games based on the series. Although Star Wars games are often hit and miss, when one succeeds, it usually succeeds beautifully. One of the most interesting ideas for a Star Wars game was Dark Forces, released for the Playstation One and the PC. Although the game itself was horrendous, with a terribly-choppy framerate and very poor level design, it was something the world had never seen before - a Star Wars first-person shooter. The sequel, Jedi Knight, cleaned up a lot of the problems, and added in some new innovations. And now the third game in the series, Jedi Outcast, has arrived. Like previous games in this sub-series, it has gotten a multi-console release. Read on to see how it fares!

OVERVIEW:
Jedi Outcast is a Star Wars first-person shooter. The game has a one-player quest, as well as several different multiplayer modes.

REVIEW:
To put it simply, this game is everything the original Dark Forces should have been. While not perfect, this game is a huge improvement over its predecessors. Once again you play the role of Kyle Katarn, the agent from the other Dark Forces titles. The second Death Star has been destroyed, but many Imperial forces still fight on, so it's up to you to infiltrate their hideouts and exterminate them. The graphics are, for the most part, solid. I was impressed at how good they are for this kind of game. Nothing state-of-the-art, but they're still pretty damn good. Control has also been given an overhaul and rightfully so, since this game lets you use force powers and wield a lightsaber. The single-player mode is extremely entertaining, and the fact that the game offers multiplayer options only adds to the overall value of the package. And you can save whenever you want to in the single-player mode! But, of course, the game isn't perfect. Like earlier Dark Forces games, the level design just is not that good. Too many areas look alike, and there are too many instant death spots that are just too easy to fall into. Likewise, in many cases your objectives are unclear, and some of the puzzles are a pain - I don't know about you, but I buy first-person shooters to shoot people, not solve puzzles! Because of the imbalanced puzzles and often poor level design, it took me over an hour just to beat the first level! Another huge problem is availability. Lack of custom control configuration also plagues the game. This is a huge problem, since the game's limited control selections will often clash with what you're used to for this sort of game. This game wasn't released on the consoles in very high quanitites, so you're likely gonna have to shell out the full new price just to get a USED copy - and in my mind, it's NOT worth that price. Sad but true. I do recommend this game to Star Wars fans, just be warned that it's not perfect, and it's hard to get a copy.

EDITION NOTES:
This is a good game, but for some strange reason it just wasn't available on the consoles for very long. Because of this, even USED copies fetch close to the original new retail price. This is extremely annoying for people like me who want to get every Star Wars game. Still, you should hunt it down if you're into this sort of thing.

OVERALL:
Overall this is the best game in the Dark Forces sub-series thusfar. Where the game succeeds, it succeeds beautifully. I am impressed with the game, it's just a shame the consular version was not made readily available to all would-be players. I strongly recommend this game if you can get a hold of it - I doubt it will disappoint any Star Wars fan.
