Quintessential Star Wars game for the N64

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 1 / 1
Date: September 12, 2002
Author: Amazon User

When the N64 system first kicked off, one of its first titles was "Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire". "Shadows..." was a very entertaining version of novel it was based on. It had challenging, yet rewarding, levels and overall solid gameplay. However, it had two marks against it. The first was that graphics had not fully realized the potential of the N64 and resembled SuperNES games on certain boards. The second is that, except for the sheer enjoyment of the playing the game again, "Shadows..." lacks any real replay value. The introduction of "Star Wars: Rogue Squadron" (based on a series of very successful novels) to the N64 environment corrected these problems and set a whole new standard for action/adventure games on ANY platform.

"Rogue Squadron" focuses on the missions of the famed Rogue Squadron, thought to be the most dangerous and lethal fighter pilot unit in the entire galaxy. Led by the legendary Wedge Antilles, the squadron fights 16 regular missions (and 3 bonus missions) ranging from defending the homestead on the deserts of Tatooine to rescuing prisoners from the spice mines of Kessel to battling the terrifying 'World Devastators' on Mon Calamari. That just barely scratches the surface of the exotic locales where missions take place. The graphic environment is much more advanced this time around. No more static matte backgrounds. Everything is fluid and moves with the player. The gameplay has also been enhanced. Greater control is afforded to the joystick button on the control pad when it comes to manipulating the ships. Overall, it makes for a spectacular gaming experience.

"Rogue Squadron" also adds a new twist that dramatically enhances its replay ability. It awards medals (bronze, silver, gold) for defeating a level with increasing degrees of efficiency. Achieving all of a certain kind of medal on all the regular missions also unlocks bonus missions. This creates a greater challenge and a greater sense of accomplishment once the challenge has been met.

There is only one minor quibble about "Rogue Squadron". In the game designers' quest to make a very demanding game, they make some of the levels almost too hard to defeat even with the highest level of skill. The most glaring example of this is the level 'Raid on Sullust'. Flying as a (supposedly) heavily armored Y-Wing, one is supposed to be able to fly skillfully and defeat the mission. However, the board is heavily populated with missile turrets that defend each of the 12-15 targets that must be hit. With skillful flying, it may be possible to knockout 3 or 4 of those targets and corresponding guns and turrets before dying, but on the life, it's likely the next ship could be destroyed in less than 10 seconds. With only 3 ships per mission, it's impossible to defeat that mission without using the 'unlimited lives' cheat code (which will NOT be revealed here). However, there's no shame in using that code, and it is necessary if one intends to achieve the silver or gold medals. So, it's a minor annoyance.

"Rogue Squadron" raised the bar to an exceptionally high level for action/adventure games that other platforms have repeatedly shown a failure to meet. Nintendo still gets it, though, as it followed this game with the even more successful "Rogue Leader" for GameCube. "Rogue Squadron" is a must have for any serious gamer's library.

Star Wars Rogue Squadron for the Nintendo 64 is an awsome game. There is a lot of action and a lot of enemies to destroy. The enemies you destroy are : Tie Fighters , AT-STs , AT-ATs , Laser Turrets , Missle Turrets , and more. There are plenty of levels to choose from , and there are two secret levels "The Battle Of Hoth" and "The Death Star." You can use the Naboo Star Fighter as your star craft at times , which is good because it shoots lasers very smoothly and is very fast. The characters you play as who fly the star crafts you control are Luke Skywalker and Wedge Antillies. The levels you go through are intense. And my favorite level on Star Wars Rogue Squadron is the Defection At Correllia. Star Wars Rogue Squadron is the perfect video game for people who own a Nintendo 64. The graphics are awsome , the sound is great , and gameplay is perfect. You will love this video game if you are a Star Wars fan.

Rogue Squadron continues the string of great Star Wars games for the Nintendo 64 with good flare. There's not many games that can top Rogue Squadron in the graphics department. The terrains, the ships, and the enemies all look realistic. The action is fast and furious and the gameplay is awesome. The sound in the game is only scarred with Luke and the others' voices. They don't sound anything like the ones from the movies. Otherwise, the graphical and sound effects couldn't be much better. The control is top notch letting you go into tight corners without having to flinch. The only drawback to Rogue Squadron is that after the first level, the game is one of the most difficult ever made. There should be an easy mode for the flyers who are not yet experts at flying or shooting targets. That takes away from the replay value in the long run after you figure out that you probably won't ever be able to pass that next level. Other than that, this is a great game and any action/shooting fans or Star Wars fans will probably like this game.

Excellent game, excellent entertainment

While this title, being on the N64 platform, does not have the depth of story or character development that PC Star Wars games have, or that of say, Wing Commander, it is nevertheless a very entertaining game with decent graphics and very good sound. In fact, I don't think I've played a N64 game yet that had more speech than this game. The speech really contributes to the overall playing quality of the game, where your wingmen sometimes say things like "I need some help over here!" or your mission commander sometimes says "It is imperative that you stay with the transports!" The flurry of speech over your radio makes the fury of battle seem that much more realistic.

The flying charcteristics of the various craft make for a more challenging game, as well. Once you think you've mastered one ship, you're forced to learn on another, and it makes the game that much more fun. Try bringing down an AT-AT with your speeder! It took me a while before I figured that one out...

The only major compaint I have about this game is that there isn't enough of it! There are only about 16 missions, plus three "bonus" missions you can earn by performing well on the previous 16. In addition to the extra missions, you can also earn the right to fly certain other ships, such as the Millennium Falcon, a TIE-Interceptor, and those yellow Naboo starfighters from Episode I: The Phantom Menace

However, cheat codes are readily available on the Internet and even a beginner can fly these ships with the correct codes.

All in all, this is a fun game to play with an engrossing environment and storyline. It's just a shame that Lucasarts made it so short.

Rogue Squadron is one of the funnest games that I own for my Nintendo 64. It is exciting to pilot all of your favorite Star Wars starfighters. And yes, you can bring down a walker flying clockwise, which the "cons" sections says you cant. just use your right airbrakes. And against another thing in the "cons" section, even though its not the real voices, the voices of Luke Han and others sounds pretty convincing. If you are a Great Star Wars fan, you should buy this game. It has excellent graphics, even without the 4MB Expansion Pak, and its easy to catch on to. The storyline is also authentic. The gameplay is great.

Not that loyal to the movie

Rogue squadon is somewhat fun to play but the majority of the missions are hard to beat. the 3D enviroment is cool looking and on some levels there are places you can see that are straight out of the movie such as Jabba the hutt's palace on Tattoine.
The main problem i have with this game is on the Hoth and Deathstar mission.(use password DEADDACK to get to them)on the Hoth mission you wrap a cord around Imperial walkers to trip them which is tricky to do. As for the Deathstar mission, the scenery is wrong. In the movie Luke fires at the exhaust port at the end of the trench, in the game the target is on the ground. But that's not what bothers me most though, After you hit your target it just says "Mission Complete" They should've had a cinematic sequence where the Deathstar blows up. That doesn't happen in the game which leaves you feeling angry and unsatisfied.

The graphics are awsome. The Explsions of ties, laser blasts, and guys on the ground screaming bloody murder. From beating the bombers blowing up the capital to saving Wedge from a prision train it's the best! The controls are easy to get use to so you already now you're a pro. When you beat the game you can still play every action-packed level untill you get sick of it. Trust me, you won't get sick.Just use the force and buy it.

I want a space battle!

All the missions are land missions and they get boring after awhile. This a good game to play when your bored. It's one of my favorites. Not close to Colony Wars though. If you like Star Wars buy this. It is a good space battle game. It would be nice if a battle took place in space though. I give RS *Bulls-eyes four womp rats* four stars.
