Hype and eye candy does not make a good game

2 Rating: 2, Useful: 11 / 12

Quest 64 is a Role Playing game that stresses 3d eye-candy, with little depth of story, plot, and no long lasting appeal (all three are essential, along with others, for a good rpg).
The main character only has one weapon and a few items which most of which repeat themselves in a pattern throughout the entire game.
There are no side quests or red herrings to keep you intrigued, no easter eggs.
The battle system first of all is the most boring turn based combat system ive ever seen. Oh and youll spend 80 percent of the game running around the countryside fighting monsters to build your levels (thats all the game's empahsis is on, building levels) and thatll bore you after about a couple of hours, off and on. The game's story seems to get loss in the building of levels after the first few hours or so.
The amazing 3d graphics are the only thing really good about this game, as its the only thing that really keeps it from getting one star. But still graphics dont make up for a game with such a linear monotonous flow.
I recently re-read some of the previous Nintendo Powers reviews of this game hyping it up as being as good as Final Fantasy series....that was a selling/promotional point more than anything else, since as the first editorial writer above said, "Quest 64 sinks in too many areas: (to paraphrase him).
If you can find this game used at a exchange store for 5 dollars nowdays then I would buy it, thankfully I only rented it and the guide, rather than pay 50 bucks for this game when it first came out, you should do the same.

The only RPG

I like this game because its one of the only RPG's on the N64. Innovative magic system, OK graphics, and its just fun. Bad things about it are it's easy, and it seemed short. You also can't buy items, which is a definite bad. But give this game a try.

Sad, Sad, Sad Game

This game as what I think of very poor graphics. I hate the way you have to fight every 10 seconds. The towns are so far apart, and there is so little detail about the town itself and people that live there. In Zelda (prefered over Quest) there was immense detail about the places. Although the world in Quest is bigger, it is by no means better.

I really didn't like this game........

As said above I really didn't like this game. For one the story just wasn't anything special. I mean your dad disappears and you have to find him and some other magical jewels. *Yawn* Secondly the battle system was HORRIBLE! I mean you're stuck in this big hexagon which if you position yourself wrong or if you want to hit the stupid monster with your staff and you aren't close enough you miss and get attacked three or more times and die and then you start all over again. That happens so often it's not even funny. The graphics are okay, nothing special though. The magic graphics were especially lame though. I mean they lasted for five seconds max.Thirdly the characters were boring, period!I mean the characters had no growth and were about as interesting as a piece of sand paper. Overall this game gave me several headaches and was just plain boring. I guess it's because I expected something more like Zelda and was disappointed. I wouldn't recommend this to anyone, period.

I did not like this game. The music was soo annyoing, and it took too long to travle from one place to another. Also the fighting seans were not pleasing, when you fought you were on a role-playing basis.

O.....kay, what on earth is this?

What on earth? I thought this would be a great game. Of course, I was only 6 years old then and always thought everything was good. But back then, the game was too hard... and now, at 12, I see the poor quality of this game. At least THQ redeemed themselves with one of my favorite XBOX games...

Story (0.5/10)
You are Brian and you have to save your daddy and contain the power of some book. We have all heard this before.

Graphics (3.5/10)
Ha ha... the architecture is sucky! The paths in the first town are very "pixely" and have seams. There landscape is way to geometric (I know - most games on the 64 are very geometric. But the landscape looks like garbage with massive amounts of it. The creatures looked OK, but the spells and bosses? Sucky.

Sound/Music (2/10)
The music is not catchy and the music is the same almost everywhere, except it is played by a different instrument in each town. However, the Blue Cave music and Limelin music was so-so. The sounds are too synthetic, even for the 64!

Gameplay (0/10)
Yup... gameplay. This is too linear and beyond belief. There is no money in the game. You are attacked by monsters every few seconds. The monsters get too strong too fast. "Hey I now have 100 HP! Huh? Who's this guy? Crud!" You get your max HP up by being attacked... boring. There are no side quests, collectibles, puzzles, mini-games, etc. Beyond belief.

Overall - (1/5)
I would have given this zero stars. If you want an RPG, buy Morrowind for XBOX. Or Paper Mario. Even Pokemon was a better RPG... and I don't really like it anymore! Don't even RENT Quest 64.

Bad - but not without merit

Good:

I loved this game in some ways. They really tried. You could tell. The cute village, populated with people. A decent storyline. Beautful graphics, really. The towns. The insides of the buildings - especially the castle - really quite excellent. An outdoors that goes from happy day to scary night. 3-D trees and objects outdoors. In particular, I remember an absolutely gorgeous town with a waterfall. The "monsters" - I just love them! What great animations! The wolves just look scary. A decent variety of monsters, each with their own special combat animations. I love the turn-based combat system. Simple and effective. The spells! What a joy. Casting freeze spells, fire balls, etc. Great spell animations. Really, to me, there really is so much going for this game... in a way you had to admire it.

BAD:

But, this game is terrible. It's completely LINEAR. Do you know what I mean? What appears to be a fork in the road (two paths to choose from) is actually a dead-end and the continuation of the path. THERE IS NEVER ANY CHOICE. Second, when outdoors YOU MUST FIGHT MONSTERS EVERY SECOND. Constantly. Third, I finished the game in only about three days. Since it's linear, there's really nothing to figure out, you just keep going Down The Path, mashing buttons (constant combat outdoors) until you reach The End of The Path and win the game.

I must say, I have rarely seen such a cinematic and beautful ending to a video game. It was a lot of button mashing to get there, but, they really tried to make it up to you when you got there!

SUMMARY:

But, overall, I really cannot recommend this awful game. This is probably the best game I cannot recommend, if that makes any sense. So many nice things about it, but it's just terrible. Buy The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time instead.

Takes too much time to travel from various places.

I already beat this game awhile back. The graphics, music and sound was pretty good. The annoying thing is that it takes a very long time to travel from one place to another. The caves are waaaayyyyy toooo long as well as the castle . Sometimes the random enemy ecounters are too frequent, like back to back.

Great game, if you have the players guide.

I've heard a lot of negative comments about this game, but I have to say that it is actually really really fun, IF YOU HAVE THE PLAYER'S GUIDE. I'm serious, without the guide, it would be nearly impossible it's so difficult to find the hidden spirits or figure out where to go or how to level up your magic and stuff on your own. When I first attempted to play this game I couldn't get past the first boss, but when I had the guide with me it was simple! I was lucky enough to find the guide for .01 at a video game store... the fact that it was on "clearance" for such a cheap "price" clearly reveals the fact that it's barely popular at all, but if you actually know what you're doing it can be very enjoyable, so give it a chance if you're up to it, but make sure you have a guide of some sort, don't try to figure it out on your own or you'll probably be running around in circles confused out of your mind.

Still no Final Fantasy or Zelda game, if your looking for a deep storyline action or RPG adventure game, but the storyline is actually pretty good considering, and the music is AMAZING! I'd agree with the other reviewer on this that the music is probably my favorite part of the game. I wish it was popular enough to have a soundtrack, I'd buy it in a heartbeat.

I WOULD recommend this game, just have an open mind, a guide, and make sure to enjoy the music as it's probably the best part. And it's fun to increase your powers and keep getting new magic spells to see what they do, then concentrate on a different element (water, fire, earth, wind) the second time you play through the game and see what different spells you can get. There are different strategies and it's fun to experiment and see what you can do differently each time. And the graphics and scenery are pretty good too, for an N64 game. Give it a chance, and you might be pleasantly surprised. I've had this game for quite a few years now and I don't regret my purchase at all. Hope this helps eliminate a little bit of the apprehensiveness about this game, and that maybe a few people will give it a try and get something positive out of the experience. It really can be fun, just make sure you're adequately prepared and you'll enjoy it.
