Fun and FAST

F-Zero X may not have the best graphics in the world, but it makes up for it in pure gameplay.

The graphics are pretty streamlined, but you do have instances when you see 30 unique cars on the screen at once without a trace of slowdown. The whole thing zips along at a speedy 60 fps, making for very smooth racing. In fact, you can almost get spoiled on this. Every other console racing game will seem jerky in comparison.

The gameplay is the thing though, as F-Zero X proves. Not only do you get 30 unique vehicles with equally unique drivers, but you also get 24 tracks. The various attractions on these tracks include death-defying leaps, amazing loop-de-loops, and intense racing along a cylinder! You'll feel like the race tracks are styled after roller coasters. Each of the 24 tracks has something that sets it apart from the others. If these aren't enough, you can unlock the hidden X Cup feature where the game randomly generates tracks from a base set of parts. Get ready to look at some wild tracks from this! One track, Rainbow Road, comes directly from Mario Kart 64. Only about ten times faster.

The sound also boasts some fun remixes of music from the original SNES classic, as well as adding several new tracks. I also like how this game has no real weapons. Sure, you can swerve into the other cars and such, but there aren't any missiles or flamethrowers here. It's truly a test of who is the better driver!

The downfalls? Well, the graphics are a little bit utilitarian (but who stops to appreciate details at 1200 km/hr?). I'd love to see a feature in multiplayer racing that lets you do an entire cup, rather than individual races. And the announcer's voice quips get repetitive. But other than this, F-Zero X is a very awesome racing game. Play it for yourself.

Possibly the best racing game on the N64

I was a fan of F Zero from way back in 1991.It was the fastest racing game yet.So when I heard that there was a sequel coming out I couldnt believe my ears.I was even more ecstatic when I heard that it would run up to 60 frames per second.Thats fast! And it delivered.Yeah the game has some flaws such as the graphics arent the best in the world but come on its F Zero. Its all about speed and fun and with F Zero X thats what you get.In addition to the 4 characters from the original there are 26 additional others such as Super Arrow and Jody Summer. There are 4 courses with 6 tracks each.Did I mention the speed? Its unbelievable and with such a flawless frame rate graphics dont matter. And who cares how the cars look?Whats important is that they all look original.Whereas F Zero GX failed to impress me very much F Zero X is a classic. Its one of the best games on N64.Nuff said

You only understand one thing: SPEED!

I will come straight to the point. F-Zero lacks the graphical wonder of other racing games in order for it to be a triumph. I will ask you, do you really have TIME to enjoy the 'scenery' when you are travelling at 1200kph? Of course you don't. This is a point argued time and time again.

My argument is that it is purely a gamer's game. The pleasure arrives when you actually play it. So many times I have heard people say 'It doesn't look very good!' This is nonsense. They miss the point. Ever heard the phrase 'never judge a book by its cover'? I tell you, Nintendo have achieved a phenomenal aim, and more.

How? Well, I will start with the fact that the game moves at an unparalleled velocity. The speed alone is a thrill. As you improve you drive faster and faster. As you get faster, you crave more and more speed. You become frustrated when you make a mistake which causes a loss of speed. It is all involving. The handling is also unlike other racing games. You need not fiercely pull the stick left or fight. It needs a deicate hand, subtely tilting it round a corner to achieve the optimum line.

There is no scenery because everything is geared to making F-Zero as fast as it is. There is the X-cup which really offers an unlimited array of randomly generated tracks. This is the crowning glory on what is a perfectly controlled and weighted racing game. Whereas the SNES version pioneered graphics, the N64 update pioneers the use of amazing momentum. It is that simple. Nintendo have once again stayed true to their roots and produced a game of outstanding quality. Take no nonsense of reports that they have fallen short of their best. Quite the opposite. They have bettered the original and once again redefined high speed racing games.

thisis the second fastest racing game i ever played

theres a bunch of super fast space planes racing through unbelivable courses at speeds as high as like 800-900 mph!its hard to hang on!there are lots and lots of ships to choose from.there are some really cool side games too.whats that you say?sounds like suicide?well, yes.thats quite true.you will wreck and die a lot.but youve got to learn to make split second deciions.so learn to anticipate!its great fun!

A monumental dissapointment

I remember the good ol' days of playing the original F Zero on the SNES. It was an amazing game, one of the best ever made in my opinion. I could only wonder at how cool a sequel would be.

After so many years, the next installment of the game that I had hoped to see for so long finally came out. However, upon a few hours of play, I felt greatly let down.

First off, there are the details of the worlds you go to. Whats the problem with the details? The problem is that THEY DON'T EXIST! The enviroments are some of the most bland, un-interesting ones that I have ever seen in a game. I honestly can say that those of the old SNES version were better.

The tracks were mostly just re-hashes of the old SNES ones, and aside from the upside-down spirals, had few interesting features.

There is no story either. Now I know that most racing games don't generally have stories. BUT, seeing as how the SNES version had a sort of comic-book action section, I assumed the only reason they didn't include more stories was because they didn't have an advanced enough system. You'd think the N64 would correct this problem wouldn't you? Think again: they didn't.

Then theres the cars: Still just four to initially choose from. Sorry but I didn't know what they expected me to do to un-lock the rest of the cars, and since the game was so boring, I didn't care.

Its too bad, this game really had a lot of potential.

F-Zero X is good for a rental, particularly the vs. mode. But other than that, I can't see any reason to shell out the cash needed for purchasing this game.

FAST, FUN, FANTASTIC!

F-Zero was my favorite game for the SNES, and I didn't think anything could top it. That is until I played F-Zero X! X is much faster, has tons of cars (each more sophisticated than in the original), more tracks as well as many small little improvements which make the game more fun. For example, there are now two ways to bump/kill other cars, making the game more difficult and fun. There's even a special Death Track option. And you simply won't belive the tracks: loops, tunnels, corkscrews, tubes, and much more. The programers have really taken advantage of the 3D capabilities of the 64. Magnificent!

A pure racing game that dosn't involve blowing your foes up.

Another hit by the famous Shiguru Miyamoto (is that the correct spelling?) and this one really might be a mixed bag for some. If your part of that Zero G Racing crowd, you might want to check this out before buying it. The biggest flaw with Zero G racing was that is had bad framerates and you could blow others up, which was really unfair, since it was just dumb luck. However, in this game, you are actually pitted against a certain skill that hasn't been used in a while, racing. Yes, you actually have to use your racing skills in this game to succeed and you have to try many different ships in which your skills are of use. Going against 8 foes in other games were nice, but imagine going 29 other opponents. You can kill them, but skill is required in which to do so. First you must wear down thier shield and then put in the final blow, but if your not careful, you could be the one ending up dead. Besides racing against all these foes, you also are going at neck breaking speeds which you must conquer before you claim your victory. With 30 ships to pick from, each unique in speed, acceleration and traction, you will find fun almost impossible to avoid.

Over rated.

I love F-Zero on the SNES and I was anxiosly trying to get my hands on a copy of this version. And finaly when I did I am very disapointed. the graphics are crap, the 3D polygons have no detail and the background is the same every time. Why can't there be a car that has all A catagorys, even if it's next to impossible to unlock, why couldnt they make the superior machine?

The race hardly goes fast enough. The only 2 tracks I did like where the ones with a tube pipe thing you drive on, like driving the outside of a tube, not the inside. And another track that had quite a few leaps and jumps... but over all, I still would rather be playing the original and best on the SNES. They should have included the SNES version on the 64 cartridge as a side game or something.

Overall:
Graphics: 3/10
Sound: 5/10
Controls: 9/10

This game might be better on multiplayer, but even a tho I have now unlocked every car and track up to the X round. I do have 30 days to return it if I dont want it, and I think I will be returning it. It's a rental game; tho you may not be able to rent them from too many places anymore, it makes me feel better that it will be out of my hair and I wont have it collecting dust rather then be going to someone else who might enjoy it more then I did.

I thought they would have learnt from the SNES version that the game needs a cheat for infinite turbo boosts... that doesnt require a gameshark.

HOLY SMOKES, THIS GAME IS ...

F Zero X may be the first F Zero game to be faster than the original but it really lacks the excitement that is present in F Zero,F Zero GX and F Zero Maximum Velocity.Sure it is super fast has tons of tracks and characters but it is extremely bland. Novice and Standard are too easy and I wont even go near Expert because that is too hard. The biggest thing here is the difficulty levels are the huge weakpoint of this game. Sure some of the tracks look gorgeous but it is a game that I play only occasionaly because I like to play every game I own at least once a month. So in conclusion rent this first and if you like it buy it if you dont forget about it.
