Strategic, innovative, but very niche

This game is going to appeal mostly to a very specific audience, but it's flexible and interesting enough to be appealing to a fairly wide audience if they give it a try. It might even serve as a good entry for some into the tactical/strategic gaming genre.

MG:Acid is reminiscent of Final Fantasy: Tactics, or Tactics: Ogre, or even the Front Mission series. Tactical turn-based play with a sort of 'card' system to commit actions and equipment to play. It's fairly innovative and very interesting, and the MG storylines are always pretty involved. The missions (so far) have been fun and not excessively long (clearly designed with portable gaming in mind.)

Some will dislike the fact that the game has steered away from real-time, full freedom gaming, but I think MG:Acid really focusses on the essence of the game, distilling gameplay to the tactical level and combining it with excellent graphics.

The audio leaves something to be desired, and the gameplay won't appeal to everyone, but I believe that this title will definitely provide good solid entertainment and be a precursor to many similar games to come. Give it a whirl, you probably won't be disappointed.

Great for handhelds (like the ... PSP!)

This is not like any of the Metal Gear SOLID games. It has a Metal Gear feel and a Metal Gear theme, but it is not Metal Gear SOLID 4. It is Metal Gear ACID, a card/turn based game.

Although this is a card based Metal Gear, it's just as fun as the originals. It takes a while to learn the how to use the cards and to how to sneak in a turn based game, but once you get the hang of it, you'll be sneaking up on your enemies and slitting throats in no time!

I enjoyed collecting the cards. I've played levels 10+ times just to earn points to buy more card packs. Maybe one day, I'll be able to trade them with frieds ;)

The turn based system works nicely for the PSP because you won't have any problem taking it out to play for just a few seconds. Thanks to the PSP's awesomeness, when you turn it on again, you'll start up right where you left off. You can put it away in the middle of a firefight and not be totally confused when you turn it on again. Just take as much time to get re-acquainted with your game as you want.

Metal Gear Acid will Burn you in a good way

Who would have thought that this series would translate so well to the RPG/Stragedy genre. In fact it feels pretty much like the good old metal gear solid I am used to on the PS2. The only difference is you use cards to plan your movement and you have to wait your turn while the guards move around. This is not as hardly as tedious or as dull as it sounds. The game is just as exciting and the pacing is as slow or as fast as you want it to be. The story is told with wonderful drawings, and text instead of audio. I have to give them credit for bringing the MSG experience to the handheld world without sacrificing what made the game so great. Anyone expecting an action shooter hasn't played the original games, and they also were too stupid to read the back of the game box. If your hesitant about buying this game, like I was, let me alleviate your fears. Any MGS fan will get into this game quite easily and you may find that it even takes the game play to a whole new level. I had alot more fun getting used to the gameplay of MGA than I did getting used to MGS3 on the PS2.

Excellent!!!!

I really enjoy this game. I finding it hard to put it away at times because it's so addicting. I also like the fact that it's card based. It's too bad the people that are buying this game thinking it's a FPS never looked at a review or any other coverage on this game before buying it. To those: "You have no one to blame but yourselves."

MGS acid a pleasant surprise

First off I would Like To say that I was not thrilled at the prospect of an MGS card game being a diehard MG fan that I am but after the first 2 hours of play the story becomes very engaging, this was one of the spookiest Metal Gear stories I have ever seen. One thing I would like to say to the nay sayers is through my experiense I have found when I asked Gamers who hated MGA how long did they play the game most of them said under 15 minutes and admitted to being predjudice because of the idea of a card based stealth game seemed rediculous, I blieve that at least half would change their minds if they gave it a fair chance.

A strage, yet fresh, approach to Metal Gear

I knew going into this that this Metal Gear was not one of your typical picks from the series. I did not, however, expect the game to be this good. Metal Gear: Acid has done away with complete freedom of movement and actions and has limited it to what you have been dealt of your card deck. I figured this game would be a mildly entertaining way to kill a long car trip and make a fairly decent first PSP game. I can honestly say I got much more than I expected. I love how the game feels and how much more you are forced to think and sneak around as opposed to relying on guns to get the job done (that's not to say weaponry is completely cast aside. I'm actually a big fan of how they incorporated the different types of weapons). And best of all, they still have the cardboard box! Also added in for a twist are character cards, each with a different effect which can really pull you out of a tight situation. Overall, I am extremely pleased with this purchase, and even if you're one of the folks who bought it expecting it to be a first-person shooter, give it a second chance, huh? You won't be disappointed.

A breakthrough in genres?

You must understand that this game is COMPLETELY UNLIKE the fast-paced, nail-biting, edge-of-your-seat action that has defined the series and revolutionized the stealth genre.

If you are expecting a handheld version of the Metal Gear Solid franchise, you will be sorely disappointed.

However, if you enjoy the strategy of card-game mechanics like Magic the Gathering, and like the idea of mixing this smoothly with a turn based strategy like Final Fantasy Tactics, all with the standard stealth gameplay the Metal Gear series is famous for, then you'll find the recent iteration quite satisfying.

You have a "deck" you build before each mission which you draw from during gameplay. You "hold" 6 cards that each contain separate actions which you can "play" to perform the actions you would normally associate with the Metal Gear Franchise. You draw 2 cards from your premade and shuffled deck at the beginning of each of your turns. Management of the cards becomes more and more important as the game progresses and you are rewarded with new and "rare" cards which become available to your deck-building if you perform missions stealthily (not being spotted) or efficiently (not having to kill anyone) or quickly. Also packs are scattered and hidden in many locations which encourages exploration.

Enemy soldiers pace the playfield which is mapped in a grid as you dodge their patrols. They do this in "turns" which cycles through until it is your "turn" to act. You can flatten up against the wall and "knock" to draw their attention to make movement around them easier. You can "crawl" under vehicles or through crawl-spaces to avoid detection. You can set traps with Claymore mines, toss grenades, fire silenced Socoms, perform special attacks with rare character cards. 200 cards in all allow for a wide spectrum of strategies for you to custom build your decks.

Time management becomes crucial as you spend "time points" (strangely called "cost") for the time needed to perform the action noted on each card. Some of these cards provide time management support which reduces the demand in time that each card's action may take. There are cards which also increase the number of actions you may perform on each turn, but will leave you wanting to draw more than 2 cards quickly if you're not careful.

The 2 player option allows you to WiFi challenge a buddy in a strategic, stealthy, card-based face-off to the death.

If this sounds tedious to you, steer clear of this game! This is not the game for you!

If you enjoy Turn-based Strategies and enjoy card-based mechanics and deck-building, you will really enjoy this game!

single most frusturating game ever made

First off let me just say that I love the MGS series and i thought MGS 3 was one of the best games to come out in a long time. The problem with this game is the card based crap, The developers should of just made it like the other MGS series. This game just continues to become more frusturating the farther you go into it. Why the hell is it taking you so ling because it takes about 15 minutes to kil 2 guys. You each take turns shooting at eachother and the more guys show up the more they get to shoot at you while you can only shoot one guy at a time. Most of the scenarios go like this "okay im gonna take out this one guy unseen" (5 minutes elapsed) "great 4 more guys are here to try and kill me too, O one of them is unconscious and on the floor I'l just use the trusty desert eagle and kill him no problem i mean im only 1 block away *takes the shot* (...) i missed howd that happen. *takes MGA introduces it to a cherry bomb and blows it to hell so no one else has to suffer through this hell hole*. So all in all I would say the only people that should buy this game are people who have immense amounts of patience. The only reason i gave this game 2 stars is because it functions on the psp and it is made by the metal gear developers.

Different than the ps2 games but still awsome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This game starts of with an awsome storyline as usual with Metal Gear games, but after it becomes a totaly new experience. Being a completely different game there is a tutorial at the beginning which is pretty helpful, but could explain more than just the basic movements in the game. The game may be a turn-based strategy card game but it still focuses on stealth like the old Metal Gear games we all love. U can still knock on walls and the guards still use the alert mode and evasion mode to catch you. I loved the short cut scenes everytime you use a weapon, also the character cards are really awsome, like metal gear ray. Overall i loved this game, and even though it is different i think konami successfuly made the transition into the portable game market

This is NOT for Die-Hard Metal Gear Fans

Metal Gear Acid is quite different from any other Metal Gear game before it. Most of the time when a game in the series is "different" from the others, it's slapped on with a "For Die-Hard fans only." This isn't the case in Metal Gear Acid. This isn't for die-hard fans, but for tactical RPG fans. To put more simply, if you like Metal Gear Solid and Final Fantasy Tactics, this game should please you just fine.

On the other hand, Die-Hard Metal Gear fans may be disappointed that this isn't your typical Metal Gear game. This has more RPG elements, and while it influences stealth and strategy beyond all else, it isn't as exhilirating as the previous Metal Gear Solid games.

Our story begins when a plane flying above Lobito Africa is suddenly hijacked by terrorists. All the passengers on the flight were paralyzed by fumes from the plane. Once again, Snake is called out of retirement because he's the only one capable of stopping this terrorist plot.

Acid takes place outside the Metal Gear timeline. Snake is actually the only returning character in the series. His commander's name is Roger, and he's also your tutorial guide. This may sound great, but it's Metal Gear Acid's first flaw. The card system is new and unique. Roger does a terrible job at explaining things to you. Most of getting to know this card system is because you'll have to experiment with it yourself, and that takes nearly three hours of gameplay, and attempting the same missions over and over again.

The Card System isn't terrible, but it could use it's improvements. Each card grants certain abilities. Everyone of them allows you to move, but depending on the card depends on what you do. For example, a silenced socom card lets you shoot your enemies, a cardboard box card can be equipped to evade enemies and a ration card restores your HP.

Roger also neglects to let you know your cards are drawn at random for every turn. You're also never told you can equip cards so that they're not always randomized. Really, Roger is useless, and don't think the instruction manuel will help you much either. You'll basically have to figure out the card system as you go along, and you may die several times in the process.

Each mission consists of you, as Snake, getting from one end of the level to the next. It starts off as simple as getting past a fence, and then getting past guards. Be forewarned that while this is a short game, it's going to take you a while to complete each mission. Metal Gear has always been about stealth, and Acid is no exception. You'll be expected to go undetected. Likewise, the cards will let you crawl, use stun grenades, flatten against walls and knock on them, and whatever else you can think of.

The game also ranks you after each mission. You can always play through levels again to get a better ranking. Your ranks is based on how long it took you, how many enemies you killed, how many times you were spotted, how many continues you used and how many rations you used.

As you get further into the story, you'll be able to buy more cards to help you along in your quest. Any Metal Gear fan will LOVE looking at some of the cards. Some date as far back as the NES days, others are more recent and from MGS2 and 3. You'll get to see Metal Gear REX and RAY, and even all the different reincarnations of Snake.

Once you get to a certain point in the game, it goes from being just Snake you control, to controlling Teliko as well. She's Snake's ally, and just the same, you'll have to get her through each mission as well.

Later on you'll also unlock a multiplayer game, and it's quite fun. You can connect with other user's wirelessly for some combat fun against one another. You're goal here is to collect as many disk as you can and kill your opponent. There's a set time limit, so you'll have to be fast about it.

Graphically, Metal Gear Acid is one of the most beautiful handheld games ever made. Sometimes the framerate slows down, but it's forgiveable. Also, it's really nice to see the character animations on the cards. If it weren't for the card battling, you'd probably think Acid was just another normal Metal Gear game.

Likewise, the audio is great! The music in the missions is incredible, and the sound effects are even pretty cool and unique. Definitely Metal Gear music.

Of course not everything about this game shines. I really didn't like the slow pace of the game. The cutscenes are LONG and it isn't the classic voice acting that Metal Gear fans enjoy. The cutscenes are LONG and drawn out, and like most MG games, they talk about useless things that aren't important. The good news is you can blow through them by holding down the X button.

There are a bunch of hidden cards, but they require you playing through the game all over again. Metal Gear Acid is fun, but like most tactical games, you have to be very patient. Some parts may not be worth going back to play just for a goddamn card. Essentially, you could blow through the game with just the default deck. But that's not a whole lot of fun, is it? I didn't think so.

Metal Gear Acid is for the tactical RPG fanatic. If you're looking for a more action packed Metal Gear, you're going to have to wait a while. Metal Gear Acid is great, but not for those who enjoy the Metal Gear games for their promising stories, deep characters, and action. This is for those who enjoy the stealth part the most.
