My two cents

There are obviously two polarized sides to the issue of how good this game is. I started off in the camp of people saying "A card-based Metal Gear...wheeeee". Luckily for me, a friend of mine allowed me to borrow it from him, to experience it for myself (I like to try things before making my mind up about them). As soon as you learn a few basics (nothing in the game told me that another gun with the same caliber ammo counted as ammo for loading purposes), this game becomes incredibly engaging. The strategy aspect brought about by having only 6 of your myriad actions available to you at any time, and those 6 decided by chance, really adds a different intensity to the game. I have played regular MGS games, and this is different, but it's a good different, you just have to be willing to give it a chance. As a side note, essentially this game hasn't left my PSP since it's purchase over a month ago, as it is still fun to play even after I've beaten it more than a few times.

A great story marred by horrid game play

Metal Gear the card game. What idiot thought this up? Card based video games (like the Urban themed games) are really getting on my nerves. They're often times slow paced, and obnoxious in that you never seem to have the card for the action that you want. The game even requires you to use cards to move! Every action, and reaction are restricted by a card system that is too complex, and too difficult to get a grip on. Worse yet by the time you've figured out how to play it you're squaring off against the game's requisite Metal Gear.
On the plus side the game's graphics are pretty good, and the story is superb, albeit a little convoluted. Regardless it's the well written story that will probably force you to complete the game.
The down side is that the story is presented in text and hand drawn stills as opposed to the fully voiced cinematic (yet real time) cut scenes that Metal Gear is known for. There is no reason aside from developer laziness that the presentation had to suffer like this. In fact, it is this presentation which makes the story somewhat convoluted, as it is at times, difficult to tell what's happening.
The music is also pretty disappointing for this "all powerful" handheld (PSP). If MGA is your primary reason for buying the PSP, let me forewarn you, you're probably better off looking for story spoilers on the web. This game has so many annoying game play problems it's barely worth it to play at all. If this had been a real Metal Gear game rather than a cheap card based knock off it could have been something special.

Hey it's MGS.. But tiny... and... better?

Just to start off: I'm not a kid. I just used the form so I didn't have to sign up....

Now... This game is amazing. The graphics of the character models are just some of the best on the PSP.

Now... Don't listen to all those people that say "Oh, it's horrible, it's not even a shooter!" Duh. Apparently they've never played the Metal Gear Series. It's a STEALTH game....

This game has a perfect blend of gameplay and storytelling. It will make you want to play the game more, just to find out what happens. Now, don't get me wrong. The cutscenes have no voice acting. It's textboxes. (I'm immeddiatley getting the first game with full voiceacting). But even the artwork's good.

Now... the bad part. If you don't like hard... don't get this game. If you don't like turn-based.... GET IT. I hate turn-based stuff. Love this game. Also, sure it's a card game. But it doesn't seem like it when you're playing. You use the cards to move or actually use the cards. But... You'll get addicted in most situations. There's always that odd gamer....

And.... The people who're giving this bad reviews are probably people who don't like the Metal Gear series, and are trying to put it down without even PLAYING IT. Losers....

Now, in the title, I say better. I have MGS2 for my X-Box (Would've played the others... But I ONLY have an X-box),and it's REALLY good. But I like strategy. This game's about as good as it gets.

BUT, if you want my official (ha) opinion onthe PSP lineup.... Get Lumines BEFORE this game. If you have enough for both... Have at.

Thanks for reading.

A Must For Metal Gear Fans, But Not The Series Best

First off, this is not a normal Metal Gear. Nor is it an RPG. It is a turn based strategy game with a card collecting and battling element. Which is by no means a bad thing. The action is fun and ingenious, if a little slow at times. It still has all the character of a Metal Gear game, and a fantastic storyline. Metal Gear fans will be jarred at first but will soon find something tolove in Acid.
I have three complaints however.
1)It's too difficult.
2)Having a 2nd character was a bad design decision. The 2nd character makes stealth far more difficult and creates all sorts of timing issues.
3)No voice acting. Unlike some I loved MgS2's dynamic cutscenes and excellent voice acting. In Acid, cutscenes are sparser, less action packed, and voiceless.
Still an excellent game though.

This is a great game but do your reserch all the reveiws say they didn't think it was card based when I want a game I make sure its something I want to buy. Besides this game is great if you have enough patince to sit through the great storyline (wich you should if you mant a stealth game)

An excellent RPG for the psp.

I thought this game was like the other Metal Gear games.
But I like RPG, and combine an RPG with the characters of Metal gear and you obtain a completely different game.

The graphics are great, it appears some scenes of Metal Gear 1, 2 and 3.

Old characters appear as special cards (cyborg ninja, roy campbell to mention some).

The only thing I have to complain is that sometimes you have to wait to much for your turn.

You can choose like 200 different cards and there are different weapons to choose including a ninja blade.

The game I think is short because it has like 23 levels
But overall I love this game, it is a cool start for your PSP, it was highly graded in Japan and I think it will have good grades here in North America.

Best in series since Metal Gear Solid

I loved the original Metal Gear Solid; played it through a couple dozen times. So when Metal Gear Solid 2: Son's of Liberty came out I figured it was a must have. It was an "okay" game. Yes, it did everything in the world you could possibly want it to, but the story and playability and fun-ness suffered because of its increased complexity, IMHO.

Now enter Metal Gear Ac!d. Wow! Who knew that a Turn Based strategy card game could be so addictive? It's frustrating, it's challenge, it's engrossing, it's addictive, yet it's simplistic enough to enjoy in intervals, which suits very well to a hand held console.

I highly recommend for someone who is looking for a 1st release title.

Won't Dissappoint people who like stategy games

I am new convert to the Metal Gear series and Ac!d is the first game I've played. I understand that MG is similar to the Splinter Cell series and so I can understand some of the negativity that comes from those type of fans.

However, that said, Metal Gear Ac!d is one of those rare games that takes a favorite series in a new direction. In this game, the character isn't controlled like a typical platformer. Instead, a series of randomly generated cards are presented. These cards represent various abilities, weapons, etc. along with the ability to move the character.

Movement in this game is similar to most turn-based games. The interface allows the player to determine which direction to move the character (represented by a grid) and what actions to take. This is similar to a game like 'Final Fantasy Tactics' or 'Gladius'.

The card that the player chooses to use will either move the character or apply the card's abilities. So, for example, to fire at a target, the player chooses a target and then uses the 'SOCOM' card. If there is no 'SOCOM' card, then the player can't fire at a target - they will have to end their turn and hope for a weapon card to be drawn. This is where some strategy comes in. The player must be very careful in which cards to use in movement (which pretty much every card allows) and which cards to save for its advertised ability. So, save the 'SOCOM' card and use the 'Claymore' card to move - once again, you can use any card to move instead of using its ability.

So beyond being a descriminating card player, the rest of the game also requires a bit of planning. Snake is up against guards and other evil people and must achieve his objectives. Here is where the player must choose where to move, whether or not to lay prone or stay standing, whether or not to cause noise to attract a guard, etc. This is a lot of fun and requires planning, good timing, and skill with using the cards.

For the Ritalin junkie, this game will try the patience and quickly bore. But, for a player wanting a little more strategy in a game, Metal Gear Ac!d will definitely deliver.

Sweet

I love this game. Its alot different than the previous Metal Gears but that contains alot of the appeal, to me at least. It didnt take long at all to get used to the new card based game structure. Its one of those rare games that creates a challenge without frustrating to crap out of you. If you like a good card based military game, this is for you. Theres alot of history and character apperances from the previous Metal Gear games as well, which is a nice bonus.

Tangent of Metal Gear

First of all this is a card based game. If you have never played one, like me, your going to be confused for a while. After getting used to it you will decide its eigther a horrible way to paly a game, its challengeing and im too cheap to go buy another game, or that you enjoy it. The easier mode is of course a little easier but the hardest mode is very tedious. In terms of a Metal Gear Solid game it mostly uses the name and the plot, the gameplay is a tangent from the series. I reccomend renting this game first to see if you like it, then buy it. It has loads of features to keep you wanting to play, such as collecting cards mostly. Purchase with caustion but for some this can be a very enjoyable game.
