. . . Is to be the world's most bad-ace super-spy this side of Metal Gear. And hey, to be honest, Sam Fisher can even give old Snake a run for his money, both as a character and in terms of the title's gameplay, and that's not easy to do.
First off, Splinter Cell takes place in the Tom Clancy near future (much nearer now than it was when the game was released) of the fall of 2004. The Georgian president, after reaching power through a bloodless coup, was being investigated by the US. Trouble is, the agent, or agents, doing the snooping have gone missing. Now, as a member of Third Echelon, Sam Fisher must find them, and what they discovered that got them in trouble. And, as is the case with Tom Clancy's universes, there's a whole lot more going on than meets the eye. As Sam, you have to find out what. Sam's getting gray around the temples, but he's more than capable of holding his own, and getting Michael Ironsides for his voice was inspired.
The name of the game here is stealth. And this game won't hold your hand as much as Metal Gear Solid, making it that much more challenging. I could go on and on about the fabulous graphics; the lighting, the animation, the butter-smooth control, and the extraordinary AI. However, I won't. They are all top notch, the AI especially. Sound and sight are what alerts them to your presence, which means light and noise are your enemies. You have to creep around slowly and softly, stick to the shadows, or create your own. Take enemies out one at a time, or pass them by in the darkness like a ghost.
That's really the best thing about this game: total and complete immersion. The world, lives, breathes, and thinks, and you have to stay one step ahead of it. Splinter Cell encourages you, FORCES you, to think like a highly trained covert operative. You must become Sam Fisher, because if you don't, you'll die, a lot. Actually, you'll probably die a lot anyway, but in this game, that's not a problem. In some parts, this thing is unrelenting. Tom Clancy's one-hit-one-kill rules apply here, for both you AND your enemies. However, patience will keep you alive, along with caution, and, most importantly, you have to think like a spy.
And that is what makes this game so great. Sure, there are a couple isolated times when you think that enemies should see you and they don't. Sure there are some times when a little more help from your espionage cohorts would be nice. However, this game is rooted in realism, and it'll stay with you. For example, you know you've been playing the game too much when you walk into your bedroom when the light is off and immediately notice which corner would be best to hide in. Seriously, this game makes you think like a spy that much, and, if you have the patience and skill, it is extrememly freakin' fun.
There's not really much of a downside to this game. Unfortunately, don't expect the amount of action found in titles like Halo, or even Metal Gear Solid. This is about patience, information gathering, and doing it all without leaving a trace. However, if you dig this sort of game, you are doing yourself a disservice by not getting it and enjoying it.
Without a doubt, the best game since Halo

Until Halo 2 comes around this is the game that all others will be measured up against. I never enjoyed either Metal Gear Solid games but bought both of them regretably. I had no plans to get this game figuring it was the same game in different packaging but I got as a gift for Xmas and I have not been able to put it down. This is the game that will change your mind about stealth games. Don't let Metal Gear ruin your perception of this genre, this is awesome!
Pretty good, with more to it, it could have been the best

I just finished the game and i must say it was not very difficult at all. If u are a hardcore gamer, i'd suggest you play the game on hard difficulty if you really want a challenge. Overall, it was a solid game. Amazing graphics, nice sound effects, AI were pretty challenging and voice acting was superb. So here's the overall low-down
Pros
- Amazing graphics
- Exotic locales
- Decent missions
- unlimited restarts from check points
Cons
- Game progressed just well enough to keep you from getting bored
- Main character doesn't really do much else besides from sneaking around and incapacitating people
- A lotta characters who's names you'll forget
- Mediocre soundtrack
All in all it's a good game but compared to metal gear solid, it may not be as interesting. I'd still recommend it to anyone who likes stealth games.
Patience....

First of all, I like to start off saying this game takes EXTREME level of patience. The game play is very very realistic, the shadows and lighting is probably the best. The actions such as crouching, jumping, leaning back against wall, sneaking up on someone are all very realistic spy moves. The gadgets like night lights and heat sensative goggles all show that developer spend time on it. Story line is that you are a spy going around all these European countries and you have to sneak around and make sure no 1 hears or sees you not even your shadows. That gets me irritated sometimes, and also you do not get that much ammo. I am not really into stealth and looking for stuff kind of games, but I have to give this game its props for great game play, nice sound and visual. There isnt any big flaws in this games in that case any flaws. Except it is very very time consuming.

I have been reading a lot of reviews from people who have not played this game yet. They are already giving it outstanding reviews based only on still images or short previews.
Those samplings do not do this game justice. It is all that you think it is going to be and more! Nothing short of outstanding!
Everything from the atmosphere to the basics of the game play are phenomenal. The visual and auditory definition are a great testament to what the XBox is capable of. The detail in 5.1 Surround blew me away!
Better than Metal Gear

This game is incredible detailed and amazing to play. The controls take a little time to get used to. The levels are very difficult in some parts and require a lot of patience (trial and error sometimes) to progress in the game. It's undisputable that the game is visually stunning, whether or not the gameplay is as enjoyable is truly dependant on the type of person you are. I would highly recommend renting the game before buying it.

Stealth Action Redefined, Indeed

According to the case, Splinter Cell is stealth action redefined. Having played Sons of Liberty and Substance, I can wholeheartedly agree. The gamer takes on the role of Sam Fisher, an ex-CIA covert op brought out of retirement for one last job (of course),in Georgia, Russia. While it is not based on a book, the plot is classic Clancy, with the generic Russian megalomaniac plotting to take over the world and blah, blah, blah. Its all an elaborate setup to get you into the obligatory training round and eventually into the field (one thing I didn't like: for an experienced veteran, must I take baby steps in Third Echelon HQ to remember how to operate?).
Splinter Cell has amazing graphics even without the eye-popping engine that operates the light and shadows, and if I could rate a game on graphical prowess alone, SC is an instant 5. That said, I do have a few complaints. While the first couple levels offer impressive but not impossible challenges that are gratifying to overcome, fun quickly turns to frustration around Level 4, the midpoint of which is SC's answer to the racing level in Mafia. But all in all, SC is a fantastic, innovative game which I recommend for all experienced, hardcore gamers looking for a challenge - newbies need DEFINITELY not apply.
