Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 5 / 7
Date: January 27, 2003

I'm sorry to say this to all the PS2 zealots out there. Solid Snake has been knocked off the pedestal by Sam Fisher, the hero of Splinter Cell. You, the player, control Sam Fisher. He is a member of the SAS and was sent in by Third Echelon to descover the whereabouts of Agents Blaustein and Madison. Only to descover new things. There are many plot twists to keep you entertained.
The best part about this game is the graphics. The night-vision builds huge amounts of tension and the thermal effects are breathtaking. Although these are good, the best and most important part of Splinter cell is the shadows. They are needed to hide in so that enemies aren't aware of your presence. You can shoot out lights so that you can hide bodies. They also look fantastic. Never has a shadow been cast so well in a videogame.
The movement of Sam is very straight forward. He can sprint, walk and sneak. However, guards can be alerted of Sam's presence by the sounds that he makes. One of the small things that Sam does is called the split jump. He can do this to get above enemies in narrow corridors only for them to helplessly walk under him. You can then release San from the corridor to land on the guard.
The clever use of gadgetry in Splinter Cell is another key factor. There are lots of gadgets but i'll just mention my favourite. It is called the Diversion Cam and can be fired to any surface by using his F2000. You can then make a noise to alert nearby foes. They will look at the camera and at that point you let out some gas which incapacitate them.
This is just a small part of Splinter Cell. There are many things in the final game that i couldn't mention because on some puzzles you need them. However good a game is there is always one problem. With Halo it was too hard (Legendary) and with Splinter Cell you need a lot of patience. Because of this the game can become a bit linear. Apart from that it is the third best game on Xbox. After Halo, Unreal Championship respectively.

My son is a idiot after this game

This game has made my son a complete freak now. He is always running around with his paintball gun sneaking up on us and shooting us with it in the back of the head. He made these goggles and calls them his night vision goggles and spies on everyone and we dont know he is there. This is strange behavior for a senior in high school. I have took him to a pyscologist but that didn't work. I do not know what to do. The other day he tried to infiltrate his school and change his grades and got caught and of course he had that stupid paintball gun. This has outraged me and my wife all of our good clothes are stained with paint now. This boy was normal before he s tarted playing this game. I don't know what to do.

Great game that offers realism without constant shooting

Splinter Cell is an game that requires you to use stealth to creep past guards and other characters to accomplish your anti-terrorism covert operations. The graphics are highly detailed and the game world is a realistic story of geopolitical events unfolding on a CNN-like news channel.

You play Sam Fisher, a Third Echelon operative, sent on several missions to accomplish undercover missions to save the world. You must complete some missions without any weapons, and others with some James Bond type gadgets.

I haven't finished the game yet, but I'm right at the end. It has an interesting storyline, without getting into too much detail or long cut scenes.

PROS:
* Great graphics. The dark atmosphere of shadows and shade make for an interesting game.

* Great Sound. The voice work and sound effects are done correctly and add to the excitment of the game.

* Good Controls. I never read the instructions, and I was able to quickly work out the controls. The very first mission is designed to train you as a "new agent" on the controls.

* Exciting Missions. The missions are constructed to force you to use your stealth skills to complete the mission. Some missions you are not allowed to kill anyone.

CONS:

* Downloadable Missions. They claim that you will be able to download additional missions in FEB. 2003 if you have XBox Live. I want to see those extra missions on a disk.

* Some of the graphics are weaker than others. The cut scene videos show people with only three fingers and a thumb. The two middle fingers are somehow glued together to form a single large finger. Sometimes, when you lay a knocked out guard down next to a wall, when you go to the other side of the wall you can see his head or arm sticking out of the wall. These are both minor items.

* Somethings the missions can be long, without a full explaination of how to complete each stage of the mission. I found my self having to try a few different things to determine what I was supposed to do to finish the mission.

007 vs. Splinter Cell

Since every other review has covered what I usually talk about, I've decided to take a different approach. Comparasin time! I present a situation, and then how you would solve it in each game.

A. There is a hall full of soldiers which you must pass.

007: Mow them down SC: Crawl over them on a ceiling pipe

B. There is a camera in a corridor which you must pass.

007: Who cares? You'll shoot anybody who sees you SC: Uh-oh. Better shoot it. Or, if it's armored, sneak around.

C. There are two soldiers in a room, backs to you. You...

007: Shoot them. Duh. SC: Grab one and use him as a human shield against the other

D. You just killed somebody. You...

007: Wait. They'll magically dissapear. SC: Hide him in the freezer so no one sees him.

E. There's a computer in a room. You...

007; Shoot it. It's funny when they explode. SC: Steal the data stick, then read the contents.

Obviously, realism and tactics go to Splinter Cell, while brainless killing and computer smashing goes to 007. Make your choice, 'cuz I've made mine: Splinter Cell.

Not Like Previous Tom Clancy Games

Don't be fooled, this game is not going to be anything like Rainbow Six, Eagle Watch, Rogue Spear, or any other Tom Clancy game. Finally, an edition to the master of actions' video game collection that will actually be fun to play!

Obviously, I haven't played the game yet, but I have seen numerous trailers and have read the book upon which the story is based. It was a fine read, unlike most of Clancy's work it has nothing to do with swat teams and beurocracy, it's hardcore, (non-evil) vigilanteism.

From what I gather the game will be somewhat like a mix between Syphon Filter and Metal Gear Solid, both fine games. Put together, even better. There will be no more impossible to plan team strategy maps like in Rainbow Six, just action and a great story. If you're a fan of MGS or SF, I would highly recommend this game.

Check out the trailer at XBOX.com and you'll see what I'm talking about, this is a great looking game with exclusively XBOX content, which equals superior graphics!

BAD * * * Game

I thought Halo was as good as it gets, I was wrong, Splinter Cell rules over all other X-Box titles. This is the most realistic game I have ever played, and I've played every console out there since Pong. This is only the second time I have given 5 stars to a game (the other was Goldeneye on N64).
So realistic that while I was playing I caught myself whispering to my wife who was sitting next to me, so the guys with the next room with the guns wouldn't hear.

Incredibly Detailed Graphics - the shadowing is better than any i've ever seen.

Great Controls - very accurate, no glitches, or having to pound a button several times to get the reaction you want.

Great Gameplay - enough of a challenge at normal level to keep you comming back, and not so hard you want to quit.

Very detailed plot, and great cut scenes - not to much that you get tired of seeing them, and they play in great with the realism factor.

If you love shooters, this one is a must own. I would have bought the entire system if it only had this game. Great Job.

The amazing stealth-action game that started the revolutionary Splinter Cell series

Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell is an amazing game that has completely changed the way people look at video games, but also the stealth-action genre, for that matter. The game is truly too good for words; the only word that is even good enough to describe it is "masterpiece". That is truly what it is, a masterpiece, because of its seamless integration between stealth tactics and adventurous action. There are no other games in the genre that offer the style of gameplay that Splinter Cell offers. It is a unique gaming experience that you have to play to believe.

The core gameplay at the heart of Splinter Cell is revolutionary, a style that has never been put into a game before. The game puts you in the boots of American super-spy agent Sam Fisher. As Fisher, you will go deep behind enemy lines to operate in top-secret covert operations. You must remain hidden and not be seen or captured, otherwise the U.S. government will claim no knowledge of your existence. As you gain experience operating as a super-spy, you will soon learn that opening fire on enemies and making noise will only cause an alarm to be raised, which will simply put all your enemies on high-alert and will probably get you killed soon enough. So instead of run-and-gun gameplay, Splinter Cell forces you to use stealth tactics, which pretty much means to stick to the shadows and avoid being seen; and if you must kill your enemies to complete your mission objectives, be sure to do it silently. In order to silently eliminate enemies, you must sneak up to them without making noise. Then, after grabbing them, you will have the option of interrogating them or forcing them to cooperate with you, and then you can either kill them or knock them out.

It seems like a simple concept, but it is a lot harder than it seems. You won't just be able to blaze through levels and complete your objectives in a matter of minutes. The missions are extremely challenging and you will end up replaying missions again and again. In order to survive, you must learn how to operate silently and in the dark without being seen or detected. This is when Splinter Cell's stunningly amazing graphics come in handy. Not only are the characters in the game each meticulously detailed to have ultra-realistic physics and true-to-life animations, but the environments are extremely realistic and full of life. The shadow effects are one of the main highlights of the game. Not only are they there for looks, but they are actually directly integrated into the core gameplay. They are actually a necessity for your survival, as they help you remain hidden and invisible to the enemy. Overall, the graphics are stunningly amazing and look unbelievably realistic and extremely true-to-life.

The sound is simply icing on the cake. It brings the amazing gameplay and the stunning graphics to life. Ubisoft has always been a company known to take full advantage of Dolby 5.1, and Splinter Cell is no exception, especially in surround sound. The game shows off every single sound, from Fisher tip-toeing in the dark to the pop of your silenced pistol to the pounding of enemy fire being shot at Fisher, it is all simply unbelievably realistic.

At first, I was skeptical at purchasing this game because I didn't think I would like its stealth based gameplay, considering I was more of a Halo fan. But much to the contrary, I had absolutely no problem paying $50 for this game when I purchased it when it was first released because of the hours of enjoyment I got out of it, and the hours of fun I still get out of it today. The bargain price of anywhere from $10 to $20 is definitely worth the money. Even though there aren't a whole lot of features in the game besides the outstanding single player campaign, it is still definitely worth the money considering how many hours of enjoyment you will get out of Splinter Cell.

Splinter Cell has an amazing story running throughout the campaign. It really pulls the action together and really makes it worth playing. You will find yourself tearing through missions just to see what's going to happen next in the story. This makes Splinter Cell one of those rare addicting games that will never leave your Xbox console until you complete it.

Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell is a unique experience that no other games can compare to. It's truly a one of a kind game that is so revolutionary in its gameplay that I can honestly call it a masterpiece. With the stunningly amazing gameplay combined with its extremely realistic graphics and it's true to life sounds, Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell is an amazing stealth action game that has changed the way people look at video games.

Splinter Cell- An excellent game

You are in a darkened corner. You watch as a patrolman descends the stairs. You size him up, noticing his AK-47 is drawn. You quietly sneak up behind him, and when he stops walking, you grab him. You place your silenced pistol up to his forehead and drag him into a darkened corner. Another guard walks into the room. You quickly turn your pistol towards him, shoot, then turn back to your hostage. You quickly hit him in the back of the neck, knocking him out.

This is a great game. It was made in (I believe) 2001, and yet the graphics rival that of games such as Halo 2. The physics of the game are amazing, and it is very well programed. Your guns drop shells, which stay on the ground breifly, and bullets leave holes on walls. Guards will notice you if you are too loud, and if their comrades are sniped, they will sometimes open fire, even not knowing where you are. You can knock out, kill, or avoid enemies.

The graphics, like I said, are amazing. The fire looks very realistic, and the lighting is perfectly done. People look realistic, not quite so much as the scenery, but even in games like Halo 2, people are not the focus.

Missions change greatly, and environments change with them. The dialouge isn't great, but it is decent, and if you dont play too close attention to it, it is a nice backround noise.

All in all, if you have one game to buy, buy this one.

AWESOME!

Splinter Cell is simply awesome! The best graphics ever on a gaming console! Hair raising stealth action! Cooler gadgets than James Bond! Very detailed and immersive, YOU BECOME SAM FISHER! YOU MUST OWN THIS! This game truly had me glued! The learning curve is just right: easy to learn, hard to master.

Just an Average Game

4 Rating: 4, Useful: 3 / 3

Pros:
1. VISUALS: The lighting of this game are really stunning
2. ENGAGEMENT: The weather component is awesome (though sam never gets wet in his combat wet suit)
3. EASE-OF-USE: The gameplay and moves (Though I was hard pressed to figure out how the Chinese could always walk up on me in zero darkness yet the Russian mafia, CIA, etc couldn't) are excellent. Excellent use of the controller buttons for multiple moves.
4. ENGAGEMENT: The interplay of the News channel was great (but it lost it's brilliance because of Con #2 see below)
5. EASE-OF-USE: The heads up indicator that tells you when you can grab a person or object.

Cons:
1. ENGAGEMENT: The game is too repetitive. The repetitive nature of the game can only blend well with a great story had a lot more umph! to it.

2. ENGAGEMENT: The developers came up short on the story. This game could've reached cinematic proportions. Clancy as a consultant and the individual who came up with the story could've done a better job with the story. The 3 story line threads could've been developed much better! Much Better! #1 The thread the news is broadcasting, #2. The thread that Sam fisher is aware of because of his covert ops, and #3 What is really going on that needs to be unravelled.(Kids don't just play video games any more).

3. Visuals - I wasn't always too impressed with the visuals of the game, considering what Halo did with the Xbox in all kinds of environment. Sometimes guards in the distance reminded me of some previous PS2 titles

4. ENGAGEMENT: The game environment - I will reference other games. Grand Theft Auto 3 and vice. There isn't anything normal going on in the worlds that Splinter Cell takes you to. Everyone is on guard. No one is dropping off a grandmother. No one is roaming the streets look for a club. No one is living in the worlds created by Splinter Cell.

5. ENGAGEMENT: The guards are too routine. These guys have limited conversation. They don't drink. They don't smoke. They don't sit down even though they are supposed to be patrolling their area. Basically the guards are not alive! They should have about 20 things they can do depending on their environment.

Conclusion: Without a CONTINUALLY engaging and credible story then the game becomes boring!! If Splinter Cell was the first game, like MGS 1 or even Tenchu, then we could accept this with the birth of a new genre. But since Splinter Cell is adding to the genre not inventing it unfortunately the bar obviously has to be raised to the next level --Hand an award to Halo for raising the bar on FPS -- to be included in the pantheon of truly ground-breaking games.

Splinter Cell adds to the library but does not raise the bar.
