Start your engines!

When I am not working on networks or teaching classes I love to play computer games. While mostly I play golf, baseball or puzzles games every now and then I like to try out something new. I found this game to be both fun and a great break from the everyday grind.

The install was easy as I started with cd1 and answering a few questions and before I knew it the installation was complete. I was able to get Windows 98, ME, 200 and XP to work. The game calls for a 32MB video card and I would say this is a minimum, I would also recommend a video card with 3D acceleration.

Also the hard space required is 1.5GB and I would recommend 3GB. There are several different rallys and each one has a different set of obstacles and events that can occur. I was able to play the game with the keyboard and mouse, but the gamepad or sidewinder wheel would certainly enhance the game play.

The graphics are great and with a P4 processor you have very little lag in the refresh and the game runs very smoothly. I only had one game failure and that was under Windows ME, the other versions had no failures and the game played for over 3 hours at a time.

While I am not an expert in this software, I found it easy to pick and play and overall I was impressed by the amount of different things that can happen when you play.

Not Realistic

Some of the problems I have with this game are: 1)Tracks are too easy, not challenging. 2)You don't make up time on the turns. 3) If you floor it all throughout the race, your not penalized, finesse is not rewarded, and the damage on the car doesn't affect your speed. 4) Tracks are generic, and not specific to a certain country. 5)Feedback is gimmicky.

This is a game for a younger audience under 10 years of age. For a more realistic Xbox game, I recommend Colin McRae Rally 3 and if your willing to wait for November of 2003, Colin McRae Rally 04 will be coming out.

Awesome Racing Fun - Best on a home system!

This game is the best racing game I've ever played on a home system (well, it is the best racing game short of Sega's F355 simulator...). Even if you are not a Rally-fan (I myself certainly am not), this is going to be the game you want to get! Driving it simply is more fun than any other game out there...

a bit to diffucult in later stages of career mode (beginner)

The game is great looking but what's up with the diffuculty level in the later stages of career mode. I don't know about anyone else but I don't care to spend a full day trying to learn each turn of one certain track so I can come some what close to finshing 2nd or 3rd. The faster cars that you open up are no fun to race with they go to fast for the later races and all you do is spin out at every turn, they are to hard to keep on the narrow tracks. This game is worth a rental, after a week or so it's just not any fun you'll find your self getting very angy (I try to avoid these kind a games). I believe a game should be a journey you would not normally experience in life and enjoy doing it not hating it, especially at the prices these games are now a days.

Best driving game so far

Breath-taking graphics, fun and engaging gameplay, serious damages to your brain and eyes and fingers... A few other top driving games possess these qualities, but none so far features an infinite horizon and the finest details like this game. This is simply the best driving game we've ever seen. (Hopefully another Xbox title will come out soon to look and play even better.) This is all about dirty driving, and unlimited fun. The physics model is accurate, the controls easy to master, and the fun just non-stopping. Simply a great game.

one of the best games for any system

I dont usually like racing games. This is the ultimate exception. If XBOX never came out with another game, I'd be satisfied knowing I have this in my collection. This is one of the most compelling reasons to buy this system - an absolutely perfect game graphics-wise and game-play wise. Its hard to keep a session under 2 hrs of playtime. The graphics are simply unreal, game fastpaced and extremely fun and intense.

THE racing game for X-Box

Simply put, this game puts Project Gotham Racing to shame. And speaking of shame, shame on Microsoft for not making Rallisport the FIRST racing game on X-Box.

What a Blast

I'm not a big racing fan, but "RalliSport Challenge" changed all of that. This is one of the premier off-road racing games, full of racecourses and 4WD off-road cars. There are three different types of circuits to choose from: Rally, Rally Cross, and Hill Climb. Rally consists of six African Safari courses, six Pacific Northwest courses, and six Mediterranean courses. Each has it's own unique characteristics, from sand, to dirt and mud to curvy tarmac. There are three different circuits for the Hill Climb, including ice, sand and mud. The Rally Crosses are the least interesting because they are a closed loop race. Then you have the cars. Dozens of them. Each more powerful and better handling than the previous. There are SAAB'ss (go wild on the 93 Vegan), Audi's, Mitsubishi's, Ford's, and even a VW Bug.

There are numerous types of games you can play, but the best is going head-to-head with a friend. The replays at the end of each race can be hysterical, especially if you or your buddies are prone to flipping their car off embankments, rocks or cliffs. Plus, up to four of you can play at once giving a new meaning to friendly competition. The Career mode is fun too. Everything is based on points, and the more points you score the more Circuits and Cars are available. Race until the end and unlock that SAAB 93 Vegan, it's the bomb.

Overall, the game is fun, and challenging to a point. Once you learn how to make the turns without losing time or spinning out, you'll pretty much clean up all the computer racers. The last set of races are actually competitive with the computer, but once you conquer the new supped up cars you'll bet them as well. The best is going up against your friends.

Seems unfinished

This game does one thing well. You fly down beautifully rendered roads at very high speeds and having to listen to your copilot in order to know what's coming. The terrain looks simply incredible - almost photorealistic at times.

I've been playing the game for a day now, and the thrill has started to wear off already. The terrain looks incredible, but it is not varied enough - the game engine seems effective only for grass, trees, and road. The buildings, fences, rocks, fans, etc. don't come across well at all. The levels get monotonous very quickly. I was frankly shocked by how bad the cars look.

The best part (and premise) of the game is flying down these roads having to rely on your copilot. Just like real rally driving, it is truly intense and takes a lot of concentration. But once you've learned the courses it's not like rally driving anymore, so the best part of the game is done with! I would have like to see something that could generate new courses so that you couldn't get to know them. Yes I know it's a lot of work putting these courses together, but they could have at least strung together prebuilt sections. They could have at least done more courses.

Multiplayer - no map? Or could I not figure out how to get one. Since the navigator is turned off the players need to know the courses.

The sound is passable. The music is completely, inexcusably lame TB-303 stuff. I didn't realize the 303 was dead until I heard this game. Luckily it's mixed way back.

The camera angles don't zoom out very far. I would have liked to have seen different cockpits for different cars, but there isn't really a cockpit view at all.

Playing against the computer: The opponents AI doesn't seem to respond to your driving - they seem to robotically follow a predetermined path. In fact the opponents ram you from the side right off the starting line!

The game is the stodgyness of a simulation, but not the realism. You're not on rails, but you can't stray from the main path. There's no room for exploration here. There doesn't seem to be anything hidden. On the other hand, the physics don't seem very realistic - there's very little understeer. Furthermore, there is nothing like "kudos" to reward you for good driving. There's no penalty for cutting a corner.

This game could have been great if they had had time to properly flesh it out. I'll probably be playing more Gotham a week from now.
