Game of the year

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 2 / 3
Date: March 29, 2004
Author: Amazon User

This game, is by far the game of the year. Most reviewers that i've seen and read (before I got the game) said the game had suprior graphics, a tremendous story line, and amazing gameplay. Well, they were right. Even the music brings such emotion to the puzzle you're trying to solve. Although this game may get pretty impossible at times, it's mad fun unfolding the puzzles. Great attention to detail and a very addicting story line. It is fairly long, so it actually makes you feel like you got your moneys worth, as I did. You know Ubi is going to come with some cool things for you to scope out, and they really broke through on this one. Graphics are superb for a game of this calibur. Props to the p33pz at Ubisoft.

Value: Like I said, it's worth the money.
Length: Decent/Fairly Long.
Content: New swords, new sand tanks, learn new moves/tricks.
Control: Lovely control, although it doesn't respond so well sometimes on a tight turn or a wall-run. You got 3 different camra angles to choose from. Dagger of time abilities: Freeze, Rewind, Slow Motion, Fast-Foward. And you also recieve visions on how to do the next puzzle. Which is very helpfull. Lots of save points.
Graphics: Simply put: Beautiful. GREAT Attention to detail, they paid more attention to the smoothness of the game rather than the gameplay itself. Which makes it an even more intriging experience. The graphics are more of a squared type. Which doesn't make them intervine so well with eachother somtimes. But they still look good, hair movement, realistic water, over 500 animations for the Prince to utilize.
Gameplay: Great freestyle movement. Nice combat sequences. VERY controlled balanced amount of sand and health. Run along walls, rope-to-rope, hang from ledges, jump from ledges, pole-to-pole, acrobatic moves, smoothness is amazing. So many different options.
Enjoyment: Addicting, is one word for this game. But you mustn't stay up all night and play this game, until you end it. The more play it, the more you enjoy it. And the more you enjoy it's perfection.
Storyline: Keeps you interested. This game has a VERY strong connection between the storyline and the gameplay. It isn't where it's all just battle. You have to take time to appreciate the beauty of the game in the cut-scenes.
Diffculty: Can get EXTREMELY hard at times. But sometimes it seems the puzzles are harder than rock. Until you realize they're pretty simple.
In Game Camra: Not very reliable. Shaky, must click right-thumbstick alot to defualt the camra angle. Not a very prized feature in the middle of battle.
Replayability: You'll play it over and over. Or keep playing it until you've ended it. Then play it some more.

there is only one word to describe this game, amazing. this game is too good to be true. i finally beat this game and it is definitely worth your money. the puzzles in this game are hard and may seem impossible, but when you figure them out, they are sooo simple. the fighting is also amazing. you can vault over enemies, freeze them, take sands from them, this game is AWESOME. the graphics are also phenomenal. your hair will move when you run and water will drip from you when you get out of a pool. the graphics are better than splinter cell. the camera is perfectly fine no matter what anybody says. they are just whiners. l luv this game but its not for everyone. rent it first and if you like it, definitely buy it.

Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time is one of THE BEST games EVER.

This game takes you to the life of, well the Prince. His father and an army of men have broken in to the Mahuraja's kingdom. There the Prince finds the Dagger of Time, which has the magical ability to rewind time to a limited point, saving one from danger.
Well Prince here brings the the Dagger back to his father, who happens to be with a very nitorious vizier, who tricks you into accidentally unleashing the sands of time. THAT'S BAD because now every one but 3 have been transformed into evil sand creatures, and of course as the hero you gotta go and fix it.

Audio- Amazing Indie stuff goin' on A+

Visual- Like a dreamy/hazy look that never stops inpressing. A+

Gameplay- Where do I even begin? Okay let's start with good things: The story is weaved right into the gameplay so you don't have to watch any story developing cutscenes. Your dagger can get amazing abilities like freezing enemies or using super speed to wipe out multiple enemies. The combat system is truly the BEST I've EVER seen, you can hit multiple enemies without missing any of it. You can vault over enemies and strike them in the air, you can rebound off walls, and more. Best of all, at each save point, your are given a short glimpse into the future, where you can see what you have to do to get from point A to point B.
Now the bad things: Puzzles are manditory for games like Prince of Persia, but I think they over did it a bit. Shure a couple of puzzles here or there are fine, but if you revole entire sections of a game around puzzles, then we're not happy. Actually, if take achance and notice, the ENTIRE game IS A PUZZLE. Sorry, I like my games with a little less puzzle. Plus they become VERY FRUSTRATING, you may even find yourself throwing things at the Tv screen. Next onto the repetative enemy fights. Their never seems to be a time when you get to the end of a level and there's no baddies to fight. Okay, not so bad right? Wrong, the monsters team up on you quickly and you have VERY little room for flaw. Yeah, the Prince's rock hard bod gives him the strengh to beat these guys, and the dagger can help you if you slip up, oh wait I forgot to tell you THAT NO MATTER HOW MUCH HEALTH OR SAND YOU HAVE ALL BATTLES A PRETTY MUCH WON WITH TIMING. Timing really is all that you have to take care of them, but wait it gets worse. If you DO time it right, there's still the 75% chance you'll get hit by another enemy while attacking resulting in you wasting your time. Then if that's not enough, the monsters just keep coming, and coming, and coming, etc. But these problems can be corrected with pateince. Some won't really mind, but be aware of these problems. B

THIS GAME IS AMAZING!! i can tell u from a Persian's point of view that everything in this game is extremely detailed. the paintings the words the engravings. if u know a little farsi u can even find a few hints. but nevertheless the game can be also beaten by ppl who arent Persian. the castle was simply stunning and sometimes i would just marvel at the creations set upon by the creators. the story was beautiful and kept me goin the whole time. the love between farah and the Prince was romantic and played in with the story nicely. the gameplay was so fun and exciting. another thing i loved about this game is that not any idiot gamer can beat this game within 10 minutes becuz u had to think of some solutions to the problems u had. and trust me u will have some problems once in a while. the videos were definitely worth the wait. after i finished this game i wanted more i couldnt bear to stop i still crave more to the story. however the ending was not wat i expected. i sincerely hope that a Prince of Persia 2 comes out. if u are a smart gamer and like a little challenge then BUY THIS GAME NOW!!!

The Platformer for Everyone

Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time (PoP) is a fantastic game. It isn't perfect of course, but so much is right with this one that it is hard to imagine not at least renting it, if not buying it outright, if you like platformers at all. You know you're playing too many videogame when you start shopping by publisher, but its getting to that point with Ubisoft now. Remember how good Splinter Cell was? Well, this game is definitely in the same league.

PoP is more than just a platformer though, it also has a combat component that plays out more like a 3D fighting game than a classical 3rd person action game. The combat is not terribly deep or difficult (although it gets quite tough towards the end of the game) but it is incredibly stylish and exceptionally cool.

Stylish and cool are good overall descriptors for the entire game. The story is good and the graphics and animations are lush and beautiful. The soundtrack is good enough to buy, although, unfortunately, it is underplayed in the game itself.

At its heart though, PoP is really a platformer. It has two special twists though. First, the designers wanted this to be a fun game, first and foremost. As such, the game does a good job of protecting you from walking off of random cliffs, or comitting the sort of silly mistakes that can cost you hours of frustration in a typical platformer. The second great innovation is the Dagger of Time, and the ability to slow time, rewind, etc. The Dagger is of course very useful in combat, but it is amazing as a platforming tool since it effectively gives you several chances at the toughest jumps. Again, this is an incredibly powerful tool for reducing the sort of frustrations that come with a tyical platformer, since you won't have to do the same long stretch of game over and over again just to get a difficult jump and die, only to start all over. PoP takes the promise for effective time manipulation offered in a videogame like Blinx, but this time, they really deliver.

Tomb Raider for guys

PoP was first released in 89 for AppleII, Mac, DOS, Atari, GameBoy, Nintendo, etc, etc...Ubisoft picked up the ball in 03 and gave us this trilogy for xbox, PS2, game cube, etc. Also playable on the 360. Sands of Time is much like Tomb Raider (which is much like Indiana Jones) with added time control gimmick. 3rd person, jump from platform to platform, pillar to pillar, etc etc...A couple of these functions are also employed in Ubi's Splinter Cell (hanging on ledges)...

PROS
- wall running is cool (even though probably influenced from the Matrix).
- good to have a middle-eastern themed title in the mix.
- graphics are fine.

NEUTRAL
- story

CONS
- combat is button mashing, arcade-like, not much fun for many of us.
- primary combat attack is a button, not the right trigger (like every single other game in existence). Counter-intuitive.
- camera (view) is DEPLORABLE. Often uncontrollable and goes wherever the hell it wants to.
- bad guy is a rip-off of Aladdin's bad guy, even with a long face, beard and cobra-headed staff...only thing missing is Gilbert Gottfried's annoying parrot.
- too much like Tomb Raider. Gameplay, climbing, jumping, locations, etc. Combat in tomb raider is also fairly bad with its goofy infinite ammo auto-targeting stuff.
- time control is just a gimmick in place of a much better function (SAVE ANYWHERE).
- jumping around is often risky and hard to control (just like in Tomb Raider). Often it jumps where you don't want to, often to your death.

I don't totally get why everyone thinks this game is the bee's knees. The camera view, combat button-mashing and often-hard-to-control jumping make it more annoying than pleasant to play.

Prince of Persia was one of the first games I went out and bought when I received an Xbox for Christmas, and I must say that all things considered, I'm satisfied with my purchase. First off, POP is just a beautiful game. I don't know how it looks on the PS2 or Gamecube, but on the Xbox it's magnificent. The lighting and water effects are among the best I've ever seen. It isn't that the game just looks pretty, though; it's essential to immersing you within POP's atmosphere and environment. One of the game's selling points is its vast freedom of movement, and rest assured that this is indeed one of POP's most enjoyable features. It's relatively easy to learn most of the moves, and I'd say a good 60% of the gameplay involves trying to find a way from point A to point B. Most of the motion is more fluid than Ryu's similar acrobatics in Ninja Gaiden (the camera is much better as well). Prince of Persia does suffer from a few flaws, though. The combat system is not particularly interesting. The Prince has a limited number of moves, and his enemies aren't particularly varied either. An even greater problem is that the controls for a couple of the Prince's moves are more tricky than they need be, and this makes for a very frustrating experience from time to time. Learning how to jump wall-to-wall, which is crucial in several parts, has to be performed perfectly if you want to get anywhere. On the other hand, I haven't personally noticed many of the bugs that others have mentioned in regards to this game. I would recommend anyone interested in Prince of Persia to check it out.

As someone who grew up playing Jordan Mechner's original, this game had much to live up to. Many games have strong areas and weak areas, but this one seems to be very well balanced. I would have loved it to be longer, but it worked right as it was. The only part that was occasionally frustrating was the combat, but only so that I would demerit the rating by a quarter star.

It is very linear, but that is true to the original. The voice acting was good, the plot engaging, the graphics excellent, and the sense of acrobatics even better than Ninja Gaiden (even if the combat was less well implemented).

For this price, you can't lose...
