I love the unreal series..... yet when I heard about Unreal 2
coming out, I knew that with only a intel pentium2.... 350mhz, Ndvdia tnt, 128 sdram, I was not prepard for Unreal 2, Yet.....Once I got my killer system, a Intel Pentium 4, 1.7, ghz, Ndvidia's Geforce 2, with tv out, 256 rdram, and windows xp home edition....I'm ready now for unreal 2, and when it comes out, I'm going to kick [buttox] on it for sure!

an excellent title

I would definatly recommend anyone who liked unreal to buy this game. It looks like it will be even better. Certainly much better than UT2003. From what I have seen of U2 it looks like it will be a game with alot of atmosphere. This is somthing UT2003 lacks completly. If you buy U2 you will probably find your self coming back to it again and again (this if u dont fin it to scary :P)

Beatiful tech but married by shallow gameplay and story

I didn't think I'd like Unreal 2 once I read the reviews about it. But heck, I was ... wrong. I don't know why every body is giving this incredible game bad reviews. The Graphics, Storyline, game play, sound, all goes beyond ut2k3's and is incredible. That's the only way I can define it. Well the storyline IS a little thin and gameplay is old run-n-gun. The only four problems with this game is:
NO MULTIPLAYER
TOO LAGGY OLD GAMEPLAY THIN STORY

Since it requires at the very minimum:

Windows 98/2000/ME/XP
Pentium III or AMD Athlon 733 MHz or higher
256 MB RAM
3.0 GB Free Hard Disk Space
8X Speed CD-ROM Drive
32 MB NVIDIA GeForce 2 MX or 32 MB ATI Radeon
Windows Compatible Sound Card(NVIDIA Nforce or other motherboard/sound card containing the Dolby Digital Interactive Encoder required for Dolby Digital Audio)
DirectX version 8.1
An Internet connection is not required to play this game. However, files created with
Unreal Editor may be shared and/or downloaded. An Internet connection and a 33.6 kbps or faster modem is required for sharing and downloading

Pretty high huh?
At a 640x480 res with medium details I got like 30-40--50-60 20fps avg. at a 800x600 res with high details I got like 10-20-30-40-50-60 fps avg. At 1024x768 resoutlin with highest details I got like 20-15-10 and below fps avg. And lots of page swapping since I have the minimum required amount of RAM.
Now all of you "it's an average game it ..." People need to ... because I'm sick of hearing it. Legend Entertainment, Epic Games, and AT@RI, great work on technology, OK work on everything else, and I suggest this for any DIE HARD unreal fan. :|

beautiful

don't believe the Gamespot review, this game is amazing. the visuals are the best i have ever seen in any game, the in game engine rivals most prerendered cinematics in other games. Sound is excellent, from the fast-paced trance background music to the alien cries of your foes.
The weapons are well designed and balanced, though i find myself using the standard assault rifle more often than most weapons. the enemies are interesting and amazingly detailed, and while enemy AI is somewhat poor at times, it remains fairly good for the most part.
Level design is good, with a variety of interesting and unique environments. Interiors and exteriors are both rendered gorgeously, and fit in well with one another.
A word about flame effects. This game has the best i have ever seen. they are orgasmically good. flames lick at you and your opponents, spread out from flame throwers and napalm coats surfaces. the smoke produced looks real enough that you can smell it.'
my only small gripe is that none of the terrain is destructible, not even shattering glass or bullet marks in walls, but i can forgive infogrames this time. the rest of the game is magnificent.
before you play, be SURE that you have the newest drivers for your video card, otherwaise odd things like messed up textures and character model skins will plague you until you install teh new drivers.

I happily give this game 5 stars, which is about 2 stars LESS than it deserves.

Beat it in five hours, what a waste!

This is a really odd game. First of all, there isn't any dodge, a staple of FPS's since for ever. Secondly, it's really really slow, it's like one of those bad dreams where you are trying to run and...Unreal 2 has no run.
The story is un-engaging, the script is poor, the maps are linear. The whole feeling is one of claustrophobia and "why did I waste my money on this mess?"
I beat this in one evening and there is NO re-play value.

Awesome

I definetly recommend this game if you want a story, not some senseless deathmatch game. Awesome graphics, sound and its even easy to learn. This game runs great on a system with; 2 Pentium 3 600 Mhz's, 1 Gb Ram, and the Geoforce Ti 4600. Pay no attention to the system requirements, I am playing it with all the options turned on and this game runs smooth. Run out and buy it now if you like First Person Shooters.

Good AI and interesting missions

I like this game. While it's true that it has nothing to do with Unreal I'm sure misnaming it was a Marketing management decision. They lied to increase sales. As such I believe if you take Unreal II The Awakening for a sci-fi fps game on its own merits you'll enjoy it.

The opponents are credible and unpredictable. The missions were interesting to me. Not just shoot, shoot & shoot. They required a little strategy and planning. Sometimes you had to place men and weapons to repel attacks or provide sniper cover to a soldier on his own mission.

The storyline could have been expanded but still the characters had distinct, fresh personalities and were not just cardboard cutouts.

An unusual ending too. Not what I expected. Don't expect 'happily ever after'. I played this game over about a week in the evenings and it was something I looked forward too.

If you want a game you can get into that provides a challenge without being impossible to the point of frustration you'll like this one.

Simply Great Fun!

Good, but lacking... until XMP.

Other reviewers have called this game to task for linear gameplay. They're right. Still others have praised it for its wonderful graphics and atmosphere. They're right, too.

I played this game with great relish at the beginning, which gradually diminished as I found the AI to be sorely lacking. I was most disappointed that they all seemed to fall for the "hide around a corner" trick that players learned in Doom. Did Legend learn nothing from Half-Life?

I'm also no fan of bosses, so that was, for me, a distraction. I will say, though, that the zero-gravity end level was a big pain in the [...]- it took me forever to move around on the doomed spaceship- but it was novel, and I appreciated that.

However... if you're a fan of multiplayer, there is a Special Edition out now. BUY IT. Or buy this one out of the bargain bin, and download the free XMP (Expanded Multiplayer) add-on. It's well worth it. XMP is, perhaps, the best CTF-style game I've ever had the pleasure of playing. Get this title, and it may be the best CTF you've ever played, too.

A bit of a disappointment

I loved the original unreal game. I was intense, being hunted by the skarj and the wandering through strange temples, etc. My only complaint were the strange guns. So I came back to get this title as I thought it much also be just as good. I must say I was a little disappointed. The graphics are good especially when the game starts out, but after that there is nothing spectacular to write about. The guns have improved a bit and seem a bit more realistic - that i liked. My biggest problem was the plot of the game. First of all the game was very short - i finished it in about 48 hours. The first unreal took me a while to finish. The levels were interesting but many of the levels felt canned - like there were too many 'defend the flag' type levels where you just stand there and hold off creatures. I thought that it didnt have the interest of the first unreal where exploration and strange surprises awaited the gamer. I agree with another post i read in that the game plot seem to lack imagination and it leaves you a little stale at the end. The other big drawback to this game is the lack of a multiplayer feature. If the single player was a bit dull it could have been made up for by some interesting multiplayer maps with the new weapons, etc. I guess that would take away from Unreal Tournament sales though.
