Unreal II Revisited

4 Rating: 4, Useful: 1 / 1

I got this game {FPS} originally when it first came out. Lots of hype. I was a solid Unreal fan. This game is completely different from the original Unreals'. It probably should have been named "Pre Halo" or something to that affect. But I thought it was great fun the second time around...using a better computer, maxed out effects and res. Its beautiful to look at and very imaginative. Lots of good weapons early on so you can plan and fight any way you like, cool alt fire modes, and a little bit of mission/puzzle solving...and at the end... a black hole gun...ooooh. Perty dang good overall. The only thing I didn't like was the all to common crappy voice acting. Emotional content was essentially ZERO. Gimme a little horror, a little fear, courage, remorse...anything... the ending is good though :)

Technical Problems

Well, I bought this game for my computer meeting the system requirements but still had problems running it. So, I upgraded my video memory to 32 Bit (Radeon). Though the requirements state Radeon or NVIDIA would, work NVDIA was recommended. I am very upset because I have a laptop and I can only use a Radeon video memory card and the game locks up in the middle of a mission and won't go any further. I love the game but I cannot get beyond the technical glitches. I believe the producers of this game should have done a better job making it usable for any system that meets the requirements. I have had no problems with any other games.

Great Game for testing your machine

...And that is exactly why I bought this overpriced shooter. It looks great and plays fine on my machine; but I have a high-powered mobo, a high-powered P4 processor and 1GB of RAM. People grumbling about this games performance should have read the requirements before purchasing it; they warn you that Unreal 2 is "optimized" for a P4 1Ghz processor. The "minimum" requirements are a joke! However, I did get the GPF when I enabled EAX sound - KA-BLOOEY!! - but I restarted Unreal 2 without re-booting my PC.

In my opinion, this is just the prototype of games to come, just like the first Unreal game. I'll enjoy playing with this one until more engrossing Unreal 2-based games come out.

Just a word

Let me just say something; people complaining that the game has a slow framerate don't understand how computers work, especially when they have a Geforce 2100+ card (no names... lol). That card is not NEARLY good enough to run this game. You need an ATI Radeon 8600 to run this game to its full extent, considering it has bump mapping, an absurd amount of polys, etc. And 128 mb for your graphics card? Pleez. This game needs at least 256 to run smoothly. So please, before you complain that the game is too slow and all that, make sure your computer can handle it. Read the bottom of the friggin box.

Going to be awesome!!

Unreal is one of the best game sieries on the planet. Unreal was great, Unreal Tournament was awesome, and Unreal 2 is going to be incredible. The graphics are taking full advantage of every high end graphics card on the market, and this makes the graphics incredible. Even though the game has incredible sounds and graphics, the system requirements are very low. The game runs well on a P2 450 mhz (or so they say). If you have a high end graphics card, a good clock speed on your CPU, and a good sound card and speakers, and like first person shooters, you should definietely get this game. The game is having a great story line and has awesome tactics and graphics. It also has high replay value, for the game has different difficulty levels, and rumor is that you may be able to play as different people.

The weapons will be alien and human, and you are fighting in a fun, realistic, futuristic environment. UNREAL 2 SHOULD BE A BLAST!!

The game does not work!!! don't get it!

The game does not even work! I have a good computer, but I cannot even install the game! Perhaps, there is something wrong with my CD. Anyone has suggestions what to do with the game!

Flashy graphics destroy the gaming world

I would just like to say that I'm a gamer all the way
and I play most of them. I pre-ordered this game and I'm
so sorry I did.

The reason I did this is because, probably just like yourself,
I got carried away with the flashy graphics. Once you take
these away, absolutely nothing remains.

The most disturbing thing was the fact that I finished it twice
in a weekend, and now it's lying on my shelf. This is
outrageous when you compare it with others like Baldur's gate 2
which offers over 300 hours of gameplay.

I must conclude that although it was fun to play, it was way to
short, doesn't offer anything new and even got boring at some
times. I hope someone on this planet can convince you to NOT
buy this game, and continue your search for a game that can
thrill you at least for a couple of weeks.

Sincerely yours,
Niels

Successor to the Original Unreal

Many fans of the Unreal series were drawn in by the excellent Unreal Tournament (UT) - surely the best ever First Person Shooter (FPS). However, UT itself was a progression from "Unreal". With UT having recently been updated to UT2003 the original Unreal is being updated to Unreal 2. And not before time! Unreal, in it's day was a major step forward in First Person Shooters but looks very dated now.

While UT was more recent that Unreal it is essentially a different type of game more oriented to multi-player sessions. This release, Unreal 2 will focus more on single person mission-based play. The underlying gaming engine in Unreal 2 is set to be more advanced than UT2K3 and will use the more recent functions developed in the graphics card sector.

This looks like a great game and is probably a must-have in terms of the importance of this release. However, one word of caution - watch out for the system requirements. My experience with UT and UT2003 has been that in order to play the game well you really need to be talking about a PC at the top end of what is available. Remember that the developers are putting this game in the market for the next few years not just for the next month so often they are pre-empting what systems are currently available. My advice would be to check this with one of the PC game magazines if you are not 100% confident of your PC. If you are confident then go ahead and get this.

Hope you enjoy it!

Not nearly as good as UT2003 or the first Unreal

Don't waste your money on this game! I bought it yesterday, played it, and sold it to someone today. If you're looking for the mind blowing action, smooth graphics. and awesome rag-doll physics of Unreal Tournament 2003, keep playing UT2003. The engine in Unreal 2 is not as polished, and the aliens don't adhere to the innovatice physics system (humans do, but they tend to float off the ground when they die). Instead, the aliens just fall over when they die, and it looks cheap. And the story, well, if you don't mind talking to a bunch of bad voice actors for the first half hour, get this game. If you want to jump right into the action (the original unreal lets you do this), don't buy this game.

Yes, the graphics and sound are good, but in comparison to some other games out there, don't even bother. I'm actually thinking of replaying the first Unreal, this gave me such a bad taste in my mouth! My heart is broken, because I thought this game was going to be great.

Good game overall, nothing ground breaking

I am still playing this game, I like the game so far.

Several constructive criticism I do want to share:

1. On a nVidia MX 64MB machine, I can't set my graphic to 32 bit color without getting 'see throughs' problems in the world. I am forced to play using 16bit depth. The hardware detection software should have place the default to 16 bit. The problem won't have bother me if the program remembers my setting. I am forced to go through the setting and hit apply everytime I play the game fresh because the game doesn't remember I have changed to 16bit in my previous session.

2. Load time is quite slow. Not too bad, but noticeable delays. I can understand this given the fact that it was a conscious decision based on task priority (read from interview with your team. You put the gaming experience above performance).

3. Comparing this game to Halo, I feel the realism in Halo is much better (thease are all details):
* The instrument panels on each weapon are rather static. The lights/status light doesn't glow or show any remaining counts. The worse model I see so far is the sniper weapon. It simply looks fake to me. I think the designer could have made the model look more like the Halo's sniper weapon, where the scope light flashes constantly and looks very 'active'.

4. Many hallway decors are static (for example, the security monitor in the first episode doesn't pan left and right like the real thing). Lights in the hallway seems to be static, same thing with some of the elevator activators.

5. The person announcing the distress call on Atlantis looks too fake. The only thing that moves was the guy's mouth. I would have made the image appeared to be in highly distressed mode (at least make the guy's head moving and have the appearance of looking over his shoulder a bit).

6. Atlantis doesn't look attractive to me. I feel like I could have design that ugly piece of hardware myself in one sitting. I figure the designer should have made it a lot more exciting of a starship to look at. Same comment for the drop plane that comes out of the Atlantis. Makes me wonder what did the designers use as their point of reference when they sit down and draw up the stetches? Look at the ships designed by the Halo team and you will know what I'm saying.

7. I like the way Halo handles 'dead bodies'. Again, these are details, but adds to the realism to the whole game. In Halo, dead bodies are still real objects in the world that reacts to nearby explosions and even respond to contact attacks (they actually bleed). In Unreal2, I can actually 'walkthrough' dead bodies. I personally hate ghost dead bodies, if that's the case, the world should just get rid of these eye candies after the opponents are dead.

8. I can see/hear things that copied from other games, they interrupts the mode of the game and make me take notice. For example, at one point I injured one of the Ghosts, and the guy yelled out 'Medic!'. I immediately thought of Half-life. I would have hoped someone can be a bit more original. Since they are human, there are literally thousands of possible swear words you could have used other than the one already used by another game.

9. Nothing new about the interactive dialogs that's used in the game. I first see that in No one lives forever and its sequel.
