I am a first time gamer in my 30s...yes 30s...Last video games I played were PAC MAN 80s style games..so you probably understand my thrill with this.
I recently bought a XBOX and Max Payne is the first game I tried. ONE WORD...ADDICTING!!!! I finally made it to the end after at least 30 hours of gameplay. The dream sequences were haunting and the 2nd one took me 2 hours to solve...The end was kind of difficult too..... I couldn't put it down and am excited to play MAX PAYNE 2...

WARNING: contains foul language and extreme violence! This game is not for kids! For adults only.
Max Payne, is a third-person shooter where you fight through an army of thugs, mafia goons and more. Max Payne is police officer whose wife and baby child were murdered for unknown reasons. He later discovers that a street drug named "V" is connected to his family's murder. Bit by bit he discovers clues that get closer to the answer. This game is just oozing with quality in every category. Max Payne, is the first game to use a unique feature called "bullet-time"; when in bullet-time, everything moves in slow motion; allowing you to dodge bullets and shoot/aim really fast. Get ready for intense shoot-outs and one helluva story.

+excellent controls
+bullet-time
+excellent sound effects
+excellent music
+excellent story
+excellent voice-acting

I rented this game because I had heard that it was short, and yes it is now that I have had it for one day I am already halfway through the game. But there are four difficulty levels and you will want to play it time and time again because of the extreme fun and wonderful story. Yeah, the SCRIPT is a little bit crappy, NOT THE VOICE ACTING!!! Why can't people just tell the difference between voice acting and script! The voice acting is great, wonderful quality. This game really is worth buying, because it is so cheap but you could beat it just by renting. There is a very atmospheric feel to this game.
NOTE TO PARENTS: This game is not very bad at all, I say that a 13 year old should be allowed to play it. Some of the cutscenes you may want to skip, but that's all. The only SC in this game is referenced, nothing is shown. If you let your children go to public schools, then they should be allowed to play this game.
Lot of fun if you're in a "shooter" state of mind

I'm not a game expert but I had a lot of fun playing this game. True you shoot every thing that moves but the scenes are cool and realistic. If you feel like shooting, get this game...
Buy this!

A terribly good value in the realm of overhyped and priced games. It's selfish, good shoot-em up fun with responsive controls, fine graphics and decent replay. One of the few games I couldn't walk away from since I began playing. The story is secondary to a series of shooting scenarios that are enhanced by a slow motion control that actually adds to the action. This game is far superior to "Dead to Rights" which it is often inaccurately compared to. The comic book cut-scenes are surprisingly well done, while the oft mentioned dream sequences are interesting if unfortunately annoying. Well-worth the minimal cash outlay.
Spectacular Game

Max Payne was one of the first titles I picked up for my Xbox and still one of my favorites. This game was difficult, yet not impossible (especially with in level saves), making the frustration level low. It is one of the best third-person shooters with a cool technique called bullet time, where you go in slow mo, but your bullets fly at normal speed. While playing the game, however, I rarely used it. The game is mostly shoot em up, but has a few puzzles and an immersive storyline. The cutscenes are great, and the game gives off a very creepy effect, especially during the dream levels. I found my heart beating fast everytime I turned a corner. It is still great the second time around, although it loses its creepiness and intensity. All in all it is a great buy, and since it is now only $..., it is one of the best buys out there for Xbox. Enjoy.
Very good (while it lasts...)

Max Payne is definately a worth while experience. Though the graphics now seem dated to games like Splinter Cell, the gameplay and bullet-time are soooooo much fun. Plus the story telling is easily some of the best EVER in a game. It is like reading a novel, only that you don't have to read (cheers here!!!).
Ok, now come bad points. First, the storytelling elements begin to fall flat after the first third of the game. But maybe that is just me. And the biggie... THIS GAME HAS SOME OF THE LOWEST REPLAY VALUE EVER FOR A VIDEO GAME!!! Unfortunately, this game lacks the ability to choose whichever level you'd like. So once you beat it, essentially all that's left is to play the game from scratch again. If you want to play that cool level you liked so much, you have to play all the levels before it. Sure, there is higher difficulties that are unlocked, but that does seem kind of shallow. At least the PC version version came with a level editor (I believe), so you could create your own levels and download new ones from other players.
Bottom line is that this is a really good experience. I've had my copy for about a month, yet I already plan on trading it in for a better game!!! I definately reccomend renting it, especially if your PC is lacking horse power...

Can't say enough great things about this adult-oriented action fest, dripping with film noir story style, and a character worthy of a series of movies. Bullet-time action is the greatest breakthru/innovation in action games in five years, and Max Payne is still the only game that has it. The story punches you in the guts from the opening, and it's not a story you sit back in watch -- YOU play the story, from the opening section where your family is murdered, You Are There.
This game still has among the best graphics on the Xbox, an ultra fast quickload & quicksave system, great controls, and a story you cannot stop playing. Get it before the sequel comes out later this year, no doubt picking up with this first story left off.

Not much strategy in this game. You can generally have to shoot everyone you encounter. The game is linear, very linear. You go through a door, you shoot bad guys. You get out of elevator you shoot bad guys. You go around a corner you shoot bad guys.
The graphic novel format is interesting, but the story is not (How is it possible to be in New York and not encounter regular people?).
The game play is easy to get used to, once you master bullet time you can proceed pretty easily. And, bullet time is actually fun to use.
I am currently on the last chapter and I will finish the game to see how it ends. Every once in a while when I get in the mood for a mindless shooter, I pop in Max Payne. I bought it, even-though most people told me to just rent it. I will most likely sell or give it away when I am done. Not a keeper. This game would have been on the top of the heap a few years ago, but today I think other games can beat it in every way.
