So a new Rpg has come out to fill out another slot on the cube's small Rpg Library. Honestly I am not a gamecube fan. I like ps2 a lot more. About one week ago I planned to sell my cube after being dissapointed with prime. Now after playing this game I dont think I want to sell it anymore. It is superb The only reason I am wasting my time on writing this review, is to tell you how great of a game this is. Trust me if you have the slightest interest in Rpg's then hurry to the store and pick up a copy of this game. So now your wondering why its a great game, well thats just what im about to tell you right now.

PROS:

Great Rpg story
Different approach in plot. The main character doesn't fall in love at the end.
40 or more hours of gameplay.
Cool characters include hot polygon babes, which almost every rpg has.

Big world.
Great battle system.

You can recruit like 20 different people on your ship and control them.

makes great use out of gc controller

Cons

[not so good] dreamcast graphics (u get used to it quickly though)

No voice acting, just subtitles.

Bad sound effects

TAKE a look at how many pros there are compared to cons. This game is a must buy for rpg fans. It has amazing gameplay. Stay away from this game though if your one of those xbox technical [people] and only care about the graphics.
PEACE BUY THIS GAME

Absolutely amazing...

When I was shopping for games at my local Electronics Boutiques, I saw this game and decided to give it a shot. I mean, the box art looked cool (not a good indicator of a good game, but still...) and I vagualy remembered it getting a good review in Electronic Gaming Monthly. So I decided to get it and try it out. I didn't even know it was a port of an old dreamcast game, back then.

Wow! Just wow! What an awesome game. The story line is extremely engaging and the characters are just so likeable. The battle system is well done and it has those crazy a$$ special moves that are the signature of any rpg. And the fact that you can set up your pirate base and customize it is just so cool. Ok, the graphics here are a little outdated, but why would you let that stop you from experiencing such a great game.

I think the most memorable moment of this game for me is when I got the Delphinus (a freakin' huge air ship). My heart just jumped when I learned I could control that thing.

If you own a cube, then you know traditional RPG's are hard to come by. So don't let this oppurtunity pass you by, get this game! NOW!

A Great RPG on a System That Needs One

The Gamecube is significantly lacking in RPGs, and this, in my opinion, is the best. The graphics, while being of Dreamcast quality (which, as you poor souls that own one know, are less than spectacular,) are actually halfway-decent. The sound could be better, and the music is pure MIDI madness, but the rest of the game more than makes up for it. The turn-based battle system is quite easy to learn, and even the ship is easy to fly. The hardest part of the game is collecting all of the hidden Moonfish (invisible, flying fish you feed to a bird in return for items) and Discoveries; I've been playing for upwards of 85 hours total and STILL haven't found everything. However, all of this searching has been well worth it, as the discoveries' descriptions are hilariously naive (the one of the satellite in particular is well worth the time invested) and the items received from the bird are amazing. The plot is definetly well thought out, and the levels are very well-designed. Overall, an excellent game well worth [the money].

One of the Best RPGs, Period.

Skies of Arcadia Legends was easily the best RPG on the Dreamcast, but not for the system's relative lack of RPGs, but rather for its sheer quality. While the transition to the Gamecube has been a little rocky, the game itself still shines as one of the best RPGs ever and, given the Gamecube's relative lack of RPGs, is the best RPG on the system.

A world of magic and technology, Arcadia is composed entirely of floating islands basking in the light of the six elemental moons. Currently in its renaissance, people are just starting to set out and explore the skies to discover Arcadia's many wonders in airships. The Valuan empire, however, seeks the power of Fina, a mysterious girl, and the six Moon Crystals to take over the world. As the friendly air pirate Vyse, it's up to you to rescue Fina and save Arcadia from Valua's machinations, a quest that will span the entirety of Arcadia and more.

Today's RPGs are typically known for their gameplay systems, but Skies is not such a game. Really an oldschool RPG in newschool clothing, Skies of Arcadia is more notable for its quality, character and execution rather than its elaborate gameplay systems. Sure there's plenty of great exploring, battling and base-building, but as a game developed by the original Phantasy Star team, it should come as no surprise that the story and narrative are the best things about Skies of Arcadia. While there isn't a whole lot of new ground being covered here, story-wise, the characters are all well-developed and the whole package is so tight and well-directed that the story's familiarity is more than justified by its wonderful execution.

Even though it's technically a two-year-old game, Skies of Arcadia still holds up pretty well today. Unfortunately, some aspects of the game had to be toned down to get it to fit on a single Gamecube disc, and as such the music and some textures aren't as high quality as the original Dreamcast release. To make up for it, Sega has added new quests, bosses and discoveries to overcome those technical shortcomings and make this the ultimate version of the game - expect to spend around 40 hours completing everything.

Like Sony's ICO, Skies of Arcadia is a game that has to be experience to fully understand it, and even then its quality may not be completely understood until you're a few hours into the game - this game affects you in subtle and wonderful ways that the screens on the back of a box can't describe. With a great story, great characters and a great world, Skies of Arcadia is a fantastic game that all RPG fans should play.

Holy crap! This is one of the best RPG games I've played

Well, I don't have too much time to write this review so I'll make it short.
I love RPG games and have played many many of them in my life. FF series are nice, but somehow I find them repetitive and not very appealing. Breath of Fire series are very fine RPG games too, but I always have the feeling that they lack some elements that Skies of Arcadia has.
For sure, there are also many many other great RPG games, which I can't talk about all of them. But this game (Skies of Arcadia) really gave me a great first impression. The graphics aren't that good at all, but the story, the characters, the maps, all the little subtle elements in the game really give me a fantastic feeling.
I use the words "one of the best" rarely. But this game does deserve them. My review probably looks real crappy. However if you like RPG games, give this game a try. You'll fall in love with it gradually.

Greatest RPG for Gamecube

To me this game is the best Gamecube game ever. It has what most RPG's require. Swords, Magic, Guns, and a great storyline. For those of you who have played the dreamcast version, i havent played it let alone own a dreamcast but im going to buy one now because of this game! Overall the game is great. I think you should buy it because: Its a fun game with hours of play involved. Its not one of those games where you can beat it right away. I think Skies of Arcadia Legends has more than 50 hours of play involved. You have to make discoveries, Get moonfish, and collect Chams. This is a fun game and i think it will be a classic.

In a drought of RPGs a ray of hope for GCN

Originally released during the final days of the Dreamcast I was introduced to Skies of Arcadia when a friend of mine bought it for me for Christmas. It's the only video game I have ever received for Christmas so it was quite an appreciated gift! Nevertheless hard times caused me to part with the DC original for some quick cash. I was relieved when they announced the title for the GameCube, with some additional material.
While there are a few new elements added to the saga I must confess that by and large the game is largely true to the original, which can be both good and bad. In the ways its good is that the story remains largely unchanged, and what has changed helps to advance the story. However the game's graphics have not been enhanced much at all, and on my TV (Wide screen, HD, and 53") the graphical flaws can really stand out. While the colors seem more vibrant, but there is visible rendering quite close to the main character as he navigates the game. The scenery looks muddy, but smoothes out gradually as Vyse approaches, and you can actually see the lines render the graphics. This was an eye sore in the original, and I had hoped Sega would fix it, but they didn't. Character models are far from impressive by today's standard, and let's face it; the day of random encounters is long past. Games like Chrono Cross and Xenosaga have shown an encounter system that is a lot more fun. Battles in Skies can go for a very long time, but that doesn't mean they aren't fun. I just wish I could skip the opening animations for the battles.
Despite the games flaws its still a fun story, with loveable and memorable characters. And the game play mechanics, while traditional and even cliché' are still a lot of fun. Its definitely a must have for RPG fans, even though its not perfect.

Great but not flawless

I love this game, it has an awesome storey, but still it is true that there are just TOO MANY RANDOM BATTLES!!!! it is fun but only if you have a video ready to watch during fights, but I still think it's great

One of the most original, finest RPG's out there.

Well, I never got a chance to play this game on dreamcast, since I didnt actually buy a DC until they went down to 50 bucks. So I had heard alot of good stuff about this game and when I heard about the directors cut on gamecube I decided it was tme to pick it up. This game is great, it is a pure joy to play, really hard to put down once you start. On a scale of 1-10 I give this game a 9.5, basically the only thing I dont like about it is that you cant see your common enemies and the random battles are many, but this is a relatively small price to pay for how great it really is. The ship battles in the game are a blast especially on the Delphinus. You can recruit up to 20 caracters for your ship crew and use them in battle (very cool). The graphics are a little out-dated but its not a big deal. Im not going to make this any longer but let me just say this too end---If your a fan of RPG's I'd run out and buy this game right now, It is in my top 5 fav RPG's of all time and I guarentee you won't be disappointed.

its fun even with turned base action

i never thought id like a turned base action game but this game is a load of fun. the graphics may not be the best but the plot is good and theres always something to do.

going around buying stuff and talking to people can be just as fun as the battleing parts. well you can either catch moonfish which gives you items or take on a bounty or just fly around in your ship looking for a fight. Its a very long RPG too it will take over 30 hours to beat so you better be ready.overall the sound is all right and the camera views can be kinda annoying but no big deal. if you have a gamecube and you like RPGs ill reccomend to you or just to anyone who has a gamecube.
