I bought this remembering Paper Mario for the N64. It's so much better than its predecessor. The graphics are outstanding, the music is great, and the written dialogue has a definite American style and flair.
The gameplay changes enough to keep it interesting, but it is a very long game.
Better than the original

The Paper Mario games are by far the highlights of the series. This game lives up to that reputation in an incredible, funny, and story rich adventure. The game opens up in typical Mario fashion in which Peach comes across a magical treasure map, a map that can lead to a treasure rumored to be under the ruins of an ancient civilization that lay beneath a town named Rougeport. She sends the map to Mario and he goes to Rougeport in hopes of helping her find the treasure. She has gone missing and a criminal organization called the X-Nauts appear and they seem to have big plans that involve gaining control of the map and the treasure. They have begun to seize control of parts of the lands, trapping the inhabitants, and searching for artifacts known as Crystal Stars so they can gain control of their power and use it to unlock the Thousand Year door and uncover the Treasure. But what is the treasure and the Cyrstal Stars? That opens up into a huge story that players will gradually learn as the game porgresses.
The leader of this organization is Grodus who makes an excellent new villain, it's a nice break from Bowser. Without giving the story away, I will say that it along with the game itself is much more darker and involved than the first game. Though the game itself is not dark, it is in comparison to some of the other games much more darker. The game starts up with a semmingly simple plot that turns into a very complex and satisfying story. There are also many subplots in each episode of the game which are great on their own and also tie into the main story in some way.
The chracaters, especially Mario's partners, are much more alive and interactive. Every character has aunique personality that comes to life through the dialouge. Each character's dialouge has such a unique feel to it that you'll fell as if they are really talking. Even Mario is more alive, though he has no actual lines of dialouge, he makes faces and noises that speak for themselves. Now the graphics are incredible and very satisfying to look at, they're enough motivation to play the game just to see what new sights are comprised in the game. The best thing is that each chapter explores a region that is completly different than the previous one, and has it's own theme and story. This gives the game new and original experiences in every chapter.
And what would be a Mario game without Bowser? Though not the main villain he still serves as a villian and he is playable in intervening parts in which Mario completes a portion of his quest. The cutscenes with Bowser are hilarious and contain alot of in jokes that even adults will laugh at. Peach will also be plyable as you control her in the X-Naut fortress, the organization that kipnapped her, and here you will learn alot of Grodus's plans and the overall storyline.
The battls sytem in fun and easy to learn. There is always something fun to do on screen and something good to look at. Now for those who believe that every game has faults, here are some possible faults. There is alot of dialogue. This game has a very complex story and that requires lots of dialouge, but it's so intresting you might not notice it. Some scenes however, especially the first few, can be very long and tedious for those who just want to jump in and get into it. But, I will say that it is worth waitng through the scenes as the action after that is just plain fun. Saving can be a hazard as the only way to save is to find save blocks and use them to save. They are times where you're so engrossed in the game you forget to punch a save block. Then you face an enemy who is difficult to beat and then beats you, you go back to the title screen and have to start from the last save block. That is VERY annoying so remember to save no matter what.
Well, Paper Mario; The Thousand Year Door is an incredible game. It has great graphics and settings, interactive and funny characters, a complex and involved storyline, humerous cutsecnes, and of course tons of Mario elements and humor. Still reading well stop and get this game.
Marvelous!!!

WOW! This game is hot! It is a major upgrade from the Paper Mario 64. The graphics are amazing, despite the characters being in 2D. The music is VERY catchy. You can't help but hum along with the battle music. It's cool how you can play as Mario, Peach, AND Bowser. In the prequal, you could only play as Mario and Peach. This time, you can see what Bowser is going through during Mario's adventure.
The gameplay of this game is what makes it the best traditional RPG ever. During the battles, you can increase the amount of damage dealt to the opponent by performing action commands. You can defend yourself AND deflect your opponents' attacks, which will come in handy as you fight more powerful opponents. Your partners can perform action commands, too. Not only that, but there is an audience to watch your battles. The point of each battle is to please the audience by doing "stylish" attacks. By pleasing the audience, you can use your star abilities. The star abilities are very helpful during battle. They can be a real big help, such as tossing items and coins at you. Of course, there will be some audience members who aren't rooting Mario and will throw rocks and buckets at him. You can stop them by going into the audience and teaching him or her a lesson.
Overall, this is a great game. If you want to play an extremely fun and interactive Mario game, then this is the game for you.

Though I have played this game alot and understand every thing.. My little brother was sometimes dissapointed because you had to be able to read... and he was a huge mario fan.... But also By my opinion There was Way too much Talking and not enough game play soo it got frustrating like every second i have to talk to some random person... But on the plus side the game did have an ok plot to it and was a pretty fun thing to do on your spare time... But people out there who are looking for a fun mario game I would prolly suggest you Get a Game like Super Mario Sunshine...

This was a great game! It had some fun puzzle you got to meet tons of new characters! This is also great because it actually made me laugh! If you want more fun and less annoying rivalies then this is totally for you!
The box is a little misleading because they say it's 2D graphics, but they're 3d and they just play with the paper effect. By the way Bowser is not the bad guy this time! You get to play as him and see the funny cut scences!
YOU MUST GET THIS! ITS SO AWESOME!

I thought this game was VERY fun, I spent HOURS playing it. The only problem is that I always get tired of fighting the battles. Overall, this game was one of the best that I have ever played though. Yes, it's true that it's 2d, but that's what makes it fun and unique from the other GameCube games. The game has an exciting plot, unique characters that all have different moves that help Mario on his way to the Crystal Stars, and totally cool places to go on an adventure, such as a tropical island, an old castle with a fire-breathing dragon in it, a huge, magical forest, a giant arena where Mario must fight and become the battle champion, a luxurious town where the rich and famous live, and even the moon!! You should definitely buy this game, it is totally AWESOME!!!! I guarantee that you will be happy with it. I sure was! Keep in mind though, if you do not like Mario, and are playing a GameCube game for the first time, then this game is not for you. You have to be a fairly intermediate gamer to really excel at this game. This game is perfect for all ages and it has appropriate and humorous content. I really enjoyed it and I think everyone else would too. SO GO AND BUY THIS GAME, YOU WILL BE GLAD YOU DID!!!!!!!
Similar, but inferior, to Paper Mario for N64

If you have never had the pleasure of playing Paper Mario for the Nintendo 64, you missed out. But this is a suitable replacement. It has an improved battle system, special paper moves, and you get to play as Bowser at some points. However, I thought it was a little too similar to its predecesor. There is a forest, a creepy old town, an ice world... just like in the last game. Many of the characters are similar, too. There also seems to be a lot of talking in this game which you are unable to skip. If you keep dying at a boss, you have to view the scene before it over and over. Perhaps it isn't as bad as I think and its just going through it twice. Either way, I was half tired of this game before I got very far. If you never played Paper Mario, you will like this just fine and you don't need to play both. It is a good game on its own, but if you didn't absolutely love Paper Mario when you played it, you may not enjoy this game so much.
