Fun game, but stupid AI

At 15 dollars, Star Wars Battlefront is well worth the price. Despite the 3-star rating, I am hooked on this game, but it has some shortcomings.
1) The computer AI is fairly bad. Highly scripted. Units tend to clump at way points on their way to an objective and often just stand around doing nothing. Units rush headlong into the guns of the enemy. Lucas Arts should have spent a LOT more time on the AI.
2) The single player scenarios are repetitive.
3) Jedi/Sith are impossible to kill... but since they have stupid AI, it's fairly easy to avoid them, or draw them off.
4) Multiplayer games get seriously laggy with a lot of opponents. I haven't joined a game with over 8 or so players without having serious lag even with a low ping to the server.
5) PC users and Mac users can't play together unless the PC user logs into GameRanger. GameSpy doesn't support Mac users for this game, which is lame. Not really Lucas Arts fault... GameSpy raised it's licensing price for the Mac version and the Aspyr had to turn them down to control costs. GameSpy are a greedy (...) for making the license cost more on the Mac than the PC.
Despite all that, multiplayer is a hoot and I do like playing Battlefront... but the dumb AI allows human competitors to take advantage of the best places to snipe or the best capture points to get right away. Instead of winning by capturing all the spawn points, teams usually win by killing off the most enemies.
Also, the "Capture the Flag" multiplayer is the only game type given, which is a real bummer.
So, the game is fun, but there are better multiplayer games out there... Still, there's something about driving an AT-AT across the Hoth snow that's fun as heck.
It is AWESOME...

My son and his friends can't wait for the second installment. The primary gameplay and arenas are limited and graphics are okay, but the entertainment value of landing on top of Luke Skywalker was priceless. This game can be hilarious. My son dropped his buddy's character right on top of an ATAT walker from his snow speeder, then circled around to destroy the walker with him still on top of it. It has it's moments.
Not that great....

I was very excited to order this game for the PC. I love BF 1942/BF Vietnam. SW Battlefront is supposed to use the same engine. The game really needs some work. LucasArts has always managed to take a great idea and mess it up somehow. This title is no exception. If you are expecting BF 1942 with Star Wars characters, then save your money. This isn't it.
PROS:
* Multiplayer (once it gets going) is a lot of fun.
* Lots of vehicles to drive.
* Good choice of characters.
CONS:
* Multiplayer interface is terrible - no way to filter, and trying to join is harder than playing the real game.
* LAG! Lots of LAG!
* No way to change positions in the vehicle (ie..driver to gunner, etc) without leaving the vehicle and getting back in.
* Vehicle flight controls could be better. The speed adjustment is terrible.
* The maps are too small. When piloting a vehicle, it is easy to easy to get out of bounds. The system then kills you very quickly.
* Load times between maps is 1 minute or more on some games. This is entirely too long.
Lots of CONS. However, true die-hard SW fans will buy this anyway. I just hope that LucasArts can fix up their game with patches to make it better.
Not up to par

Wow, you've read 70+ reviews and you've come to mine. That's impressive... most impressive. :)
By now, you've probably read endless descriptions of the game, so let me just skip to the detailed bits of my opinion. Star Wars: Battlefront a Star Wars version of EA's Battlefield 1942 and its inspired games. In that respect, this game is very sub-par.
The first thing I noticed about this game is that it barely went beyond the scope of the movies in terms of weapons or vehicles. Being loyal to a movie is all fine and good in theory, but it is a disaster in practice. Think of all of the great video games out there. How many of them have as few weapons as there are in a movie? NONE! That's because movies are about plots and flow of storyline with some shooting possible involved during a period of 1 to 2 hours. Video games(of this type) are supposed to provide endless hours of pleasure in flying, driving, and shooting! Sadly, not even all of the weapons and vehicles from the movies made it into the game! It's not like the makers of SW:BF even had to use their imaginations, there have been dozens of star wars video games that have introduced countess weapons and vehicles into the Star Wars universe like Jedi Outcast, KOTOR, and X-wing vs. TIE-fighter. If we had had these vehicles and a few other ones for practicality, things would have been much better. Instead, you'll spend the vast majority of the game shooting lazers and the occasional "special weapon". It's sad.... just plain sad... There are
- no capitol ships
- no artillery
- !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! -no space battles- !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Perhaps it should be called ground wars instead of star wars.
- very few fighters/bombers.
- no effective heavy armor (vehicles)
- no decent anti-infrantry vehicles
- no teamwork classes such as scout/artillery group or spy/engineer
- no good suppresion weapons
- no decent troop transports
- no arial transports
- only mediocre close quarters weapons
- crappy sniper weapons
- NONE of the "new" and cool weapons that we've come to know and love from
all of the other star wars video games since the DOS days!!!
- no melee weapons of any kind. Miss a weapon from KOTOR or KOTOR 2?
Don't worry, you won't find it here!
In addition, the game just feels unpolished. SW:BF copied the whole
base capturing and score depleting mechanism used in Battlefield 1942 and sequels, but I guess they got too lazy or something because they didn't bother to copy the unique voice warning messages. It doesn't matter which side you're playing on, the voice message for "you're about the loose" is the same. This just isn't true for the Battlefield series of game? Am I being picky here? Well,.. on this one single point? maybe. To have point after point like this throughout the entire game? Well, it just feels like they barely scraped together something for fear that they wouldn't get to market a Star Wars vehicle/infrantry combat game out in time.
If SW:BF had come out several years before BF1942, I would be applauding it for creativity and how cool it is. Instead SW:BF came out several years AFTER BF1942 is one of it's clones that couldn't come close to keeping up. That's sad...
If you're a big star wars fan and you really MUST pilot an AT-AS or are
simply dying to fly a Endor speeder bike against an AT-AS. Go right ahead and
get this game. Just don't expect too much. If you're looking to
flying an X-wing or TIE-fighter in some series air-to-air or do some series
strafing, you might want to hold back.
Fun..... just fun

Not caring at all about graphics, this game is very good, and puts a Star Wars label on the new brand of Checkpoint-nabbing shooter war games like Battlefield 1942, Vietnam, etc. Except there is only one basic weapon and pistol and secondary... no dropping weapons and picking up new ones.
The game is fun and addicting but gets boring. The campaigns aren't any different from the actual game at all. A big problem is that the maps are too small for aircraft to enjoy the joy of flight. To be effective with shooting, you have to constantly be braking just to hit more things on the ground.
All in all, fun, but quickly boring. Not really worth buying now, wait till it's 10$ or borrow from a friend

Finally, here is a game that does not overload a player with health or strength of firepower--a game where tactics, teamwork and individual skill all matter. This game has stellar graphics, riveting gameplay and interesting environments. For those of you searching for something a little more in your first person shooters, this game is for you. However, if you are looking for yet another Unreal clone, look somewhere else. As for computing compatability, this game ran without hitch on my Pentium IV 2.6GHz Windows XP system, which has 512mb ram and a GeForce FX 5700 Ultra graphics card.

Play in the all-time classic Star Wars conflicts through the galactic land-based struggles from the movies that spanned two eras. Fight as a soldier of the Rebel Alliance, Galactic Empire, the Republic or the Cis as you capture command posts for your faction. There are five soldier classes, from Wookie smuggler to Imperial sniper, and a host in between. With enough vehicle variety to enthuse the most hardcore Star Wars fan and the artillery to back it up, fight in 25 different vehicles on planets like Geonosis where you can put them to good use on the huge desert map. If you enjoy first-person shooters, you will like its two gameplay modes. Battle through the Historical campaigns of the Clone Wars and the Galactic Civil War or fight it out in "Galactic Conquest" mini-campaigns where you can elect the order of planetary conquest. There is plenty of replay-ability, with 16 battlefronts on 10 different planets in the Star Wars universe. Sadly the aerial combat is limited to the airspace above these battles being waged, but it is good to see the classic StarWars TIE fighter, X-Wing and Starfighters (amongst others) make an appearance. There are a lot of similarities between Battlefield 1942's hop-in, hop-out vehicle physics and the BattleFront engine design. Using first or third-person view in any cockpit, turret or droid, this is a game worth playing just for the developer's (Pandemic) engine if nothing else. Aside from the graphical glitches on ATI video cards, and the odd audio volume shifts, there are enough visual options to appease most, and with Dolby Pro Logic II there is support for high-definition sound systems. There are some very cool effects like rain, fog, puddle and clouds, so turn on anti-aliasing if you have a powerful video card. Though sometimes very confusing as to which side you fight for, there is always a trusty red crosshair over the enemy soldiers. Be sure to download the first patch to fix several minor issues from the flash Web site. The site is comprehensive, so check it out, especially the designer diaries there. In essence, this is a multiplayer game with several single player strategic campaigns, so try out the online play with up to 32 players per server.

This game doesn't live up to the standard set by the current crop of shooters on the market. The graphics, even with all settings on high, are subpar when compared to games like Doom III and Far Cry. The character and vehicle skins look good, but lack any fine detail. There is very little diversity between the factions, meaning, most of the character classes have the same abilities and equipment with the exception of a few. Capturing control points is more of a numbers game than using strategy; if you have superior troop numbers in the area, you will take the point. Assigning keys is nearly impossible if you have a joystick plugged in, so don't plan on using your stick to fly starfighters. Overall, it's an okay game that just seems dated graphically, and it has some gameplay issues. For $43-$50, there are much better games on the shelf.
BEST GAME EVER!!!!!!!!!!

I don't know where to begin. The graphics, gameplay, variety of weapons and vehicles,or just the fun of completely blowing droids( or clones) to kingdom come. This is better than any other video game I've ever played.( including halo)Although it isn't exactly a fps I loved it!
