Finally a Star Wars game that actually brings the WAR back

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 11 / 12

At last Lucas Arts has made a Star Wars game where, in the end, you do not end up becoming a Jedi. Now don't get me wrong, all the rest of the games are good, but playing a game to become a Jedi just gets old after a while. But not with this, finally they have made a Star Wars game that actually puts WAR back into the name. Experience the battles in the Star Wars movies like never before!

Yes, this game is just like Battlefield 1942, and the engine seems to remind me of it, but the game is nothing like BF1942. The main menus are much more spiffy looking, and the graphics much more crisp. The graphics are smooth as silk on both my machines at their maximum resolution (one Radeon 9800 at mobile and one geForce FX-6800 GT). Although I have had a few problems with hardware surround sound, I must say that the sound effects in this game are just like what you get in the movies. I am also sure that they will patch any kind of hardware difficulties within the next few weeks, too.

Just like said in other reviews, you can pilot ANYTHING (and I mean anything). Take a speeder bike through the forests of Endor, ride a tauntaun across the icy plains of Hoth, or (and the best thing to do) ride a sluggish AT-AT crushing down those Rebel dogs!

All in all, if you are any kind of a Star Wars fan, or just a fan of good first person shooters, then this game is perfect for you. But beware, if you want to play a game where you get to become a Jedi...look in other places.

One of the best Star Wars games I've ever played

Star Wars: Battlefront (2004.)

The Star Wars series is the greatest science fiction series known to man - and there is no denying it. The classic George Lucas films of a galaxy far, far away captured the imagination of young and old minds alike, all around the world. It is because of this that many Star Wars video games exist. Unfortunately, like with the Star Wars novels out there, the video games are hit and miss. For every Rebel Strike, there's a Masters Of Teras Kasi out there to drag down the reputation of the series. In 2004, Star Wars: Battlefront was released on many gaming systems. Read on for my review of this title.

Star Wars: Battlefront is one of the greatest Star Wars games out there. It is totaly different from every other Star Wars game in existance, but this is in a GOOD way. Essentially, the game plays like many of the multiplayer online combat action games, but it throws in the elements of the Star Wars universe. What you get as a result of this is a whole lot of fun. Basically, each mission puts you in one of the armies of the Star Wars universe (Army of the Republic, Battle Droid Army, Imperial Stormtroopers, Rebel Troopers, etc.) You choose one of several different kinds of troops on the same side and play the role of that kind of trooper. The objective of the game is to capture all of the bases in the level, and to destroy all of the players on the opposing side. Every time you die, you can respawn, and if you wish, you may choose an alternate respawning location, as well as a different class of character (or you can do the same ones.) The character classes all play differently, with each having its own strengths and weaknesses. The locales are widely diverse, and the game covers both the classic Star Wars Trilogy, as well as the more recent prequel Trilogy. Most levels also have vehicles you can pilot, which only adds to the overall appeal. You can play two-player split-screen combat scenarios, either cooperative or competitive, or you can do online LAN play if you have the necessary equipment! Even if you're just a single player, there are plenty of play modes to quench your thirst. My complaints for this game are few and far between. The only major complaint I have is that since this game was clearly designed with PC gamers in mind rather than consular ones, the learning curve is steeper than in most Star Wars video games. But if you can learn the game, you'll grow to enjoy it A LOT. I had my doubts about this game, but was wrong to have them. Star Wars games don't get much better.

Recently, Star Wars: Battlefront was declared a Playstation Two Greatest Hits title! This is great, because it makes the game readily available in stores again, AND AT A MUCH LOWER PRICE! With the game's price dropping from $50 to $20 in most retailers, if you're a Star Wars fan, you'd be a damn fool NOT to buy it!

If you're looking for a Star Wars game that won't disappoint, Battlefront is exactly what you're looking for. Though very different from the other Star Wars games we've seen appear on consoles in recent years, it's quite possibly the best of the bunch. In a galaxy far, far away, the video games are hit and miss. I assure you, however, this is one of the hits. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. FIVE STARS.

Awesome Shooter

I wasn't planning on picking this game up yesterday, but after I picked up the Star Wars DVD set, I just had to get it. I'm an impulse buyer, what can I say. But I am so glad I did buy it.

I got a new spiffy PC a few years ago and the first thing I wanted to do was buy and play FPS online. I got Unreal Tournament 2003, then Return to Castle Wolfenstein, then recently Doom 3. Those game were great, but there not nearly as fun as this game is for me. I'm a big fan of the movies, and it's so much fun being able to fight in all the big battles from all the films. You can play in either the Clone Wars or Galactic Civil War period. The battles are so big, just as big as in the movies. It's really easy to pick up. Unlike the past shooters I've played, I don't get killed instantly. I also like being able to pick where you want to be on the map, and when you die you can change your character or even which side of the fight you want to be on. The vehicles are fun, my favorite are the AT-AT's on Hoth. It's fun riding in the vehicles with other players, and shooting at the enemies with them. It's also cool to have characters from the movies on your side, like Darth Vader and Luke Skywalker. In the first battle I played, Count Dooku snuck up on my and got me. This game is so much fun. Everyone should check it out. A must have for fans, they'll appreciate it the most.

Battlefront may be what you are looking for....

Ok, I am no huge star wars fan...not that i hate it, but i just dont remember watching them. I say this to point out that I am not biased for or against this game.

The game is solid and has its high points. Gameplay is very much like any other FPS. I wish they used the ingenuity of Golden Eye (old school N64) to allow peeking around corners though. Also flying the space crafts could have been more intuitive.

Game is a little hard to progress in at first, however, the accomplishment of living longer each time is worth the rough startoff. I find myself growing to love the game. Rent the game if you are skeptical. I think you might not like it after doing only an instore demo as the time is way too short. I believe after a night or so of playing you will definitely see the game as worthy of being in your game collection.

All in all the game is good. But apart from the timeless imagery, settings and the Star Wars heritage, I do not see anything revolutionary in the game.

Would I recommend this game? Yes...
Would I run out and buy it immediately? No...
Am I going to trade this game ever? No...

If you are a huge FPS fan. Get this game, i would just be hesitant to shell out $40+ to get my hands on it. Used Games ROCK!!!

Lots of fun but not enough finishing touches

Overall, this game is a lot of fun (for a First-person-shooter) and I found myself playing it a lot, but it is not without its flaws. Some are simple graphics glitches (missing shots, paper walls, etc) but some of the others are more frustrating, primarily the horrible, horrible AI and the fact that the Install is the worst I have ever seen. The pro's do make up for the con's if you can actually get the game to install, but I would't spend $50 on this title - not in its current state.

The GOOD:
- There is a good assortment of player types to play (sniper, assault, demolitions [rocket launcher], jet-pack, etc) on many different teams (Droids, Rebellion, Imperial, Gungan, Ewok and Wookie, although they are not always available to the player.
- Each player type has its own unique weapons with their own charachteristics, sounds, model and functionality.
- Each map is large enough to be accomadating, but the spawn locations aren't always the best, and they aren't large enough to make good use of air units.
- The maps are unique, some with rain, some with wind, some desert, some ice, some day and some night, each one exciting.
- The maps are semi-detailed, enough so to add to the flavor, but simple enough to be easy on graphics cards and to avoid any confusion (you won't find yourself getting lost).
- You have active radar constantly that shows your controlled points, and some enemy/allies movements, but not all.

The BAD:
- The game lacks that polished feeling we've come to expect, simply put, there are too many inconsitencies and glitches for a final product, especially given its price.
- As others have mentioned, the weapons seem to lack accuracy at times, as well as lacking substance (but then again, we are talking lasers here, not chunks of lead propelled by explosions of gunfire).
- The Sniper rifle is not powerful enough, especially the fact that a headshot doesn't do more damage than a torso shot - or a toe shot for that matter. The splash damage from a rocket launcher is also non-existant. On the same note, there is no loss of accuracy over range which is a good thing in game terms but hurts realism.
- The game is practically a commerical mod for BF1942 so shouldn't be so expensive.
- Felt dated as soon as it hit the shelves - not up to par.
- There are some moments when the pull on your system resources (primarily video) isn't justified by what you are seeing on the screen - the graphics aren't as good as they should be.

The UGLY:
- Installing this game is a nightmare. I'm still having problems and several other reviewers as well. If you read the online forums you will note that a lot of professional reviewers have also experienced installation hang ups. Honestly, if the headline reviewers aren't getting working copies it doesn't say much for the software. In my case, one machine installed flawlessly, but the install was horribly slow - longer than Doom 3 and longer even than UT2004. On a second machine (similiar in design to the first) the CD's aren't recognizeable (in either drive, one a burner, one a basic CD) and I either get read/write errors or fatal errors that terminate setup and ultimately crash the drive and the computer. However, if I install from the same disks on other computers I can get them to install 4 out of 5 times.
- The AI is absolutely some of the worst I have seen. The enemy AI isn't good, but that of your allies is lousy and works to your detriment. In fact, if you could keep your allies from spawning, you would find the game that much easier going it alone. Your allies will blow themselves up with grenades and will blow you up with grenades - a lot! They will shoot you in the back and also jump out in front of you when you are firing - a lot! They will assault Droidekas with their shields up and die by the scores. It never seems to dawn on them that blasters won't penetrate the shields of the droideka or the armor of the vehicles, but they keep trying until they have run you out of spawns. Your allies will assault vehicles and turrets with their blasters and give no thought to cover, retreat, flanking or anything save frontal assaults. They will stand under your own vehicles, forcing you to crush them if you want to move, and they will not man the extra guns in the vehilces if you are the pilot. When I took over command of a drop ship for example, I even had two gunners on the sides but they never opened fire that I could see...why not? They employee no strategy whatsover - rush and die, spawn, rush and die again. Occasionally, they will wait to form a group of 6 or 8, but then they simply run in front of a turret or the enemy throws a grenade in the middle and they ALL die and you are down that many spawns.

In closing, if you can get the game to install (and that is a scary "if") you will find it frustrating, less than fulfilling, but ultimately fun in its simplicity. The game is especially recommended to Star Wars enthusiats (though they may inevitably question some of the finer details of the game, such as the sound of the blasters). However, I would NOT pay retail for this product, and I feel it should not have retailed for as much in the first place. I hear the Xbox version is better, so if you have a choice, I might recommend you go that route instead.

Definitely worth it!

Our family bought this game on November 9th so we've been playing for over a month now. The graphics are excellent, and get much better depending on the system you're using. For instance, we tried it out on three different computers including a laptop that didn't quite meet the minimum requirements. For the laptop, we simply set all of the graphics and sound options to the lowest settings. Worked fine. The game was still beautiful and fun! We also tried it in a desktop computer that was slightly better than the minimum requirements and it was so much better! Then we played it on a high end gamer: 3 GHz system with 1 GB RAM, a 256MB Radeon graphics card, and 5.1 channel sound, and it blew us away-- it was like watching a Star Wars DVD!!! This game is very addictive. There is nothing like jumping in a speeder bike and heading off at top speed to blow away some destroyer droids! Or better yet, you can become a destroyer droid and watch everyone else run the other way. It's also very fun to fly aircraft and blast away the bad guys on the ground. We've played this online (very easy to create and join games) as well as at a home LAN party (again with no problems). We've only tried it on Windows XP Home editions so can't comment on how it works with other operating systems.

Not quite Jedi level, but pretty fun

If you want a role playing game in the STAR WARS environment, this game may well be worth checking out. You get to be one of several classes of warriors playing on multiple maps spread out across the STAR WARS galaxy. Most all the familiar SW planets are represented here, including Tatooine, Hoth, Naboo, Rhen Var and others.

One of the surprising things about the game is that you can even choose which side you fight on. Want to be a stormtrooper? No problem. Want to be a Wookie? Go for it! Want to be a droid from THE PHANTOM MENACE? Have fun!

Each side has different classes, including snipers, rocket launchers, mortar launchers, close-quarters rifles & more. Each map favors a different class. Snipers are good in maps where there is wide open space - especially if you can get a high position overlooking the enemy. Rocket launchers are good vs. enemy vehicles. Mortar launchers are good inside narrow halls where the enemy combatants are unable to get away from the grenades.

One of the funnest things about the game is commandeering vehicles. Actually, one of the most effective ways to kill the enemy is to simply run over them. It's fun to be the "mad driver" in a combat landspeeder, mowing down stormtroopers. Apparently there are no traffic laws in the SW universe....

You are able to get into starfighters as well (X-Wing fighters, Y-Wing figthers, Tie fighters, etc), but I've found trying to shoot down enemy starfighters with a mouse & keyboard to be next to impossible.

The game has a few drawbacks. First of all, the directions re: gameplay are generic & incomplete. They don't cover all classes. For example, I still haven't figured out how to use the jetpack, and I can't find any information on it in the handbook or on-screen instructions.

Secondly, Jedi knights are obnoxiously powerful. Yes, they should be more powerful than regular classes. However, on this game they are invincible. It gets frustrating when you empty your entire arsenal on a Jedi only to have him nonchalantly waltz over and get you with a light saber. To my knowledge there are only 2 ways to kill a Jedi: (1): Run over him at high speed with a land speeder. (2): Blow them off the side of a catwalk with a grenade. Other than that, it's actually best to simply avoid Jedi knights on the other team.

All in all, this game is a lot of fun. A few of the maps are fun to play over & over & over again. If you're into STAR WARS and / or role-playing combat games, this one is worth picking up!

This is a great game. You can be droids, clones, rebels, or imperials (stormtroopers). Each team has 5 basic types of units.
Regular, missle launcher, pilot, sniper, and special. Although you can't be a jedi, you can fight along side them or fight them. They block all shots, so land a vehicle on them, run them over or use a grenade. Here is the jedi each team gets.
Imperials-Darth Vader
Rebels-Luke Skywalker
Droids- Count Dooku
Clones - Mace Windu
Pros
Great Graphics
Great Gameplay
Great Sound
Great Everything!

Cons-Takes a while to install
You need a fast computer.
I give this 12 out of 11!!!

If you're not convinced already, read this...

I really hate it when people write reviews before the game comes out. How can they possibly know whether it's good or bad? Well you may wonder why I am writing this then. I'll tell you in a minute, but first I'll have my say about the game.

Star Wars like you've never expeirienced before. After years of watching and drooling over the epic battle scences of the movie, you finally get to experience it. I can't tell you whether this game is going to be good or bad. I don't want to sit here and explain every little detail about it the developers have released, go to ign.com for something like that. But what I can tell you is that this game has the potential to be the greatest Star Wars game ever created.

Now, why am I writing this review that has so far just wasted your time? Because if you are not convinced you should buy it yet, you need to go to the swbattlefront.net forums and download the trailer "thejeditraitor" made. If that doesn't convince you to buy this game, nothing will.

Have fun out there!

Marketing and hype...nothing new here!

I must agree with many of the other low score reviews of this game.
I have 2 very high end computers and 3 medium end computers. One high end is running the ATI X800 XT graphics card, the other running the NVIDIA 6800 Ultra.

My medium end computers ran this game quite well too. It plays nicely on an ATI 9600 Pro and an AMD 2500+ cpu.

There is nothing new here in this game. I think the high ratings this game received are from young kids that are easily satisfied and new to the Star Wars software product line.

It really ends up more like confused frenzy than solid game play. The graphics are so/so - not horrible, but not stunning either and to be honest, you normally turn down the graphics settings during multiplay anyway since frame rates are everything!

The enemy AI for single player is a 5 out of 10, and multiplayer is where this game pays off to some degree. Do not buy this game for the single player experience!

I think the most disappointing thing about this product is the weapons. Most are weak and uninteresting. Every character you choose has some strengths and weaknesses as far as weapons goes. This makes for balanced play, but that always compromise all around fun in my opinion.

This game is probably going to make the die-hard Star Wars fan happy, yet it seems like all brand name and little substance beyond that. Personally, I am getting tired of the Star Wars label being used to promote a product; the fans are getting suckered at this point.

$50 is way too much for this title. It just doesn't offer that much!

Wait for it to come down in price and as I always say, wait for the demo to become available so you can test drive it yourself before blowing the bucks!
