I loved this game ever since I was a kid and it came out on Super Nintendo. (even though it came out on regular Nintendo first, I like the Super Nintendo versions better!) When Gameboy Advance was first distributed I thought nothing of it. Although, when I walked into a store and noticed there was a demo for Gameboy Advance I tried it out. It was with Super Mario Advance and I loved it so much that I bought Gameboy Advance and Super Mario Advance!
Super Mario Advance (SMA let's call it) is a wonderful game that you could take on a plane flight or something that's awefully boring. It's really fun and it's basically the same thing as the first version. In SMA they give you two games. First ever Mario and Super Mario 2. Super Mario 2 on SMA has drastically changed from the first version. DON'T WORRY NOT THE LEVELS OR THE IMPORTANT STUFF IN THE GAME, but they added more voices, some big enemies, and much more.
I gave it 5 stars because it's really fun even know it's changed a bit. It even has multiplayer but only on Mario (first ever game), but the multiplayer is really fun. (I've played it and had exciting times with my friend) The only problem is you have to get a special cable to play multiplayer. But if I were you I would BUY this game... trust me you don't want to rent.

Super Mario Advance is another excellent product from Nintendo. Even though its levels were based on the original Super Mario Bros. 2 for the SNES, the enemies were completey changed. Although even the deepest Nintendo enthusiasts(such as me) would be highly satisfied. As some people have commented on, it is like playing a portable SNES. I definitely have to say the graphics were my favorite part of the game. But, of course, it is only a "flag-ship" title. Which means Nintendo is just getting started. With the release of Gamecube in November, you can expect another Mario title. And with the Gameboy Advance hook-up with Gamecube through a special cord(scheduled to be released shortly after the release of Gamecube in early-mid 2002), you can only expect great things to come. With Nintendo's company motto of "quality, not quantity" applied to the Gamecube and Gameboy Advance's graphics and cababilites, I predict that Sony better watch out with PS2: the competion is going to be fierce. X-Box should also prepare for the competion. The Next-Generation console war is at hand! No, I did not prewrite this. And yes, I am 11. Do not under-estimate 11-year olds... I hoped you liked this commentary on Super Mario Advance, although it really wasn't on Super Mario Advance. Please excuse my deeply enthusiastic feelings for Nintendo, if I happened to use them in the article. (Nintendo Forever!)
A must buy!!!!!!!

Super Mario Advance is a very great game. The graphics are very beautiful and the game is challenging, when you link up with three of your friends you can play against each other in a fun filled battle. This is also a great way to break into you game boy advance. And if thats not enough you can try the yoshi challenge and try to collect all 40 eggs. They also say that when you complete the challenge you can play as yoshi!
Great; but different

This game is excellent...and the graphics are great! However...if you're a big fan of the Goomba-stomping Mario kind of game, this might not go well for you, because you don't kill enemies by stomping on them, only by picking them up and throwing them at things...or throwing things at them. Still, the playability is high, and you can keep going back and back, as it's still fun.
This game is even better than the original Super Mario 2!

I first encountered Super Mario 2 as a game on the Super NES, along with all the other games 1-3 and the Lost Levels. This game was harder to master than any of the others (except for the Lost Levels) and I felt great when I did finally master it.
This one, the Advanced edition of the game, has a lot more surprises and new tricks to the game than the preivous versions. It's gotten a little more tricky, and there's a new phase to the game--Yoshi's Challenge. Which means that, in the long run, I'll just be mastering the game all over again. It really helps if you take advantage of the secret warp portals scattered throughout the first few levels (there is one in each level through level 5. The one in level 5 will take you directly to level 7. See if you can find it!) However, don't get cocky with the game just because you know where all the portals are and can jump levels with ease. The final levels are still a challege, and practice makes perfect! Good Luck!
My personal favorite Mario game

While I admit this isn't the best Mario game, it is my favorite. "Why?", you might ask. For one thing, it gives us a break from the traditional "jump-on-the-enemies'-heads-and-succeed" gameplay. While jumping on something is probably a better way to defeat things then having to have to look around for something to throw at them (and I'm not the type who likes the idea that you have to depend on some form of item), but Super Mario Advance (which is conviently 2 games in one pack) keeps the veggies abundant and provides other ways to defeat enemies. You can pick them up and hurtle them. I will first describe the new-and-improved Super Mario Bros. 2, then I will describe the second game (which has also ben modified) the Mario Bros. arcade game.
Super Mario Bros. 2 is the main part of the game. This is a noticeably better version of Super Mario Bros. 2, due to the giant vegetables and larger enemies (that supply hearts whenever you throw them or hit them with something). Though it is rare to find these giant creatures, I like them. The giant vegetables take out so many more enemies at a time, that I can't believe it.
The game is creative in it's design, as each world is very rich and cartoonish, though I imagine it could be more of a dream. And it turns out that the whole game is a dream that Mario is having. However, there are only 3 designs and 7 worlds. The designs are, grass lands (sort of), deserts, and a castle. The grass lands I prefer, but I have a few favorites in the deserts. All the worlds are very rich and very beautiful, especially the castle which is built on the clouds.
You'd also think that they're fairly peaceful, but the number of enemies and creatures running around is insanely high. luckily, you always have something to defeat them with, including their allies. Yes, you can pick enemies up and throw them. Sometimes you even have to ride on their heads to get over a platform covered with spikes. Yes, enemies don't get any better then this.
Graphics are marvelous as far as the characters' designs are and the platfomrs. The upsetting thing about the graphics is how tight the screen gets, especially when you're carrying a giant vegetable or a giant enemy. Also, the design of the castle is astonishingly beautiful. Too bad it belongs to such an evil toad.
Each character is different.
Mario - 4/5 Speed, 4/5 Power, 4/5 Jump
Luigi - 3/5 Speed, 3/5 Power, 5/5 Jump
Peach - 2/5 Speed, 2/5 Power, 3/5 Jump
Toad - 5/5 Speed, 5/5 Power, 2/5 Jump
Now, don't freak out if you're a Peach fan. she's an excellent choice for almost any level because of her ability to float through the air for a short time. I used Peach more then any other character. Don't think that you're rare chance to play as Toad is spoiled either. While his jump is noticeably weaker, I wouldn't say that Toad's jump is really any different then Mario's. Luigi has an annoying flutter to his jump that makes him hard to time and somewhat loose in control. Luigi is still and excellent choice for most levels, as long as he isn't facing a Birdo.
Finally, I will discuss the enemies. Shy-Guy is a very typical enemy. Most of the time, giant enemies are giant Shy-Guys. Blue Shy-Guys are confined only to the platform that they are on. Red Shy-Guys can walk off the platform that they're on and roam around almost anywhere. Gray Snifits shoot bullets out of their mouths. The Blue and Red rule for the Shy-Guys applies for the Gray Snifits. Beezos are flying enemies with forks. Flurrys are ice-skaters. Pidgits are little birds on magic carpets. Sparks circle platforms and just fly and are so annoying. Phantos come to life whenever you pick up their key. They guard keys. Pansers spit fire balls out of their heads. Hoopsters climb on vines, ropes, ladders, and chains. Trouters are fish. Porcupos are sharp cookies. Albatosses carry Bob-ombs. Tweeters are great for defeating bosses, s use them. Cobrats are a type of snake. Pokeys are layered cactuses like from Super Mario World. Autobombs are cannons with wheels. Shy-Guys usually drive them. Ostros are also riden by Shy-Guys. Birdo is the most common boss. There are pink, red, and green Birdos. Fry Guy is a flying fireball. Mouser is a bomb-throwing mouse with sunglasses. Tryclyde is my favorite 3-headed snake. Clawgrip is a mutated crab with a passion for rock throwing. There's an unnamed creature in the game in the last level. It is a flying hawk head, like the ones that eat you when you complete a level. Wart is the main bad guy who hates vegetables. So why are they growing all ove Subcon if he's taken over?
That is my favorite Super Mario Bros. 2 version. Sure the NES version was good, but this is the best.
Mario Bros. was once an arcade game. Players would jump up and bump the enemies above them and thenkick them off the screen. That's great fun, but the main reason I think that Nintendo put this on was to give the game a multiplayer feature. I'm not too keen on it, but it is pretty neat.
Spineys are turtles with spikey shells. Fighter Flies are hopping flies. Crabs have to be bumped twice. Fireballs fly all over. There are red and green fireballs. Freezies freeze the platform.
Single Player mode is simple. You run along and bump enemies, then you kick 'em off them screen. Easy.
Multiplayer I'm not going to go into. My review is long enough now.
So, I know this is a hard to find game. But, if you want it, find it used. It probably won't come with an instruction booklet or a box. I just ordered a book from the Nintendo online store and I got the actual game on eBay. If you need a box, i'm sure you can find one on Nintendo's online store, but I just keep mine mostly in my Game Boy Advance, or my GBA kit. I recommend this game if you can ignore the few problems. Oh, and I forgot to mention the wacky camera. It's wacky, but workable.
Only one reason for 4 stars

I've been a die hard gamer since I was 5 and Nintendo's games have always been the best. First off though, I have to correct the editorial review for it is inaccurate. This game originally came out for the NES back in 1988 and was upgraded to the SNES in 1993, just a clarification. The only reason for the 4 stars is because SMB3 is way better that SMB2 and it should have been there in its place. It would be cool to see this run as a series or something with SMA2 including the original SMB and SMB3. Other than that, despite lack of originality (which was the intention) this is one of the funnest games you will ever play.
Great fun for all ages

Based off of the classic SMB2, I bought this thinking it was just stupid. After playing it, I couldn't stop. The gameplay is neat and the challenges give you something to really work on and some secrets can get you in on some good stuff. Occasionally, the graphics look recycled from Super Mario World, especially Luigi. In fact, Mario and Luigi look like they are the SMW sprites but Mario's head is weirder. The shrunken versions are the same as the GBA version of Mario Bros. as well. One concept from Mario Bros. is the super jump. You still duck for a period of time, and you still flash. And, of course, you backflip up into the air. The character stats system was excellent. Mario for beginners, Luigi for jumpers, Toad for speed-runners, and Peach for the ladies (And a relief for people tired of rescuing Peach). All fits in well. Overall, it is a good game. A bit reused, but in a good way. Some add-ons and graphic changes give you the feel of the 1993 hit Super Mario-All Stars but with the play of a 2001 GBA game. Recommended for classic gamers and Mario fans.
Downsides:
You can't switch characters after each level.
There's a new theme of carrying things. Stomping is never used.
Extra Life system is somewhat different. I can't put my finger on it, but...
Something old, something new, something borrowed...

I have been waiting for a more adult-oriented gameboy type system to come out. Gameboy Advance has granted my wish like an eager genie, and this genie also threw a fantastic game into the mix. You guessed it, Super Mario Advance. For any customer that can actually remember playing the original Mario Bros. game at the arcade, this game is well worth the purchase. This cartridge also borrows from the Super Nintendo classic Super Mario Bros. 2, which is a fun game that is no picnic to beat-- albeit not too terribly difficult.
This game is perfect for travel, especially air travel. The creaters have beefed up the Mario Bros. 2 concept by tweeking things up a little bit. I don't want to give away any of the secrets, suffice to say, this game is well worth the purchase.
Can you teach an old Mario new Tricks? Yes!

Mario returns to the spotlight. But it's not a new Mario games. It's actually Super Mario Bros. 2 and the Original Mario game from the regular Nintendo Entertainment System. Now you can go head to head with up to four people using the GBA link cable. Plus only one person has to have the Super Mario Advance cartridge, the other players can just download the stage to play it. So Super Mario Advance is one awsome remake of an older game. ....
