Roller Coaster Mania!

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 10 / 12

If you were a fan of RCT1, RCT2 is everything you ever dreamed of, and more!

First, Infrogrames took all the cool things about the first edition, and made sure to repeat them in the second. When you launch, you will see familiar challenges and scenarios, and once you start, there is that irritating but ever present merry-go-round once again. How many of you went to sleep listening to that music in your sleep? Yeah, I know, turn it off, but something insane about me thinks it isn't RCT without it.

So the basic format is the same, new lands, new scenarios. Let's move on to the good stuff. First, my favorite, favorite, favorite part of RCT2 is the Roller Coaster builder option. One thing that frustrated me in 1 is the inability just to build rollercoasters. They've taken care of that, and you have access to all the coasters without worry of land or cost to stop you from building. I've made some absolutely horrible coasters that I'm sure if anyone really rode them, their heads would explode! I spend more time in the Roller Coaster designer now than I do in the scenarios.

In the scenarios, major imporvements have been made. So many more rides are offered, making for truly a fun theme part designing experience. You have an ability to alter the enterance/exit booths to fit certain themes, different colors for the waiting lines, signs to add, more themes. It's simply amazing.

And quite the memory hog! I must say my poor PC is sputtering a bit with RCT2. I'm in the process of upping my RAM to play the game smoothly. Although I can run it, the major theme parks are difficult to browse around in. However, knowing what Magic Mountain in California looks like, I was very impressed with the recreation!

So, I must say that RCT2 is one of my new favorite games. I highly recommend this program. Does it have bugs and issues? Of course. Name me one program that doesn't. But if you enjoy software that allows you to creatively design theme parks in a fun way, you'll rush out and purchase this right away!

Not for Original RTC fans~

This sequel is such a major disappointment for those of us who have played and fell in love with the original RTC and those expansion packs. Too many choices have been taken away and the real strategy and skill needed in the original game has been dimished. Very very limited graphic improvements, some even negative graphic changes. A few more rides but many of your fun choices for scenery and themes is gone. This pack is a HUGE disappointment for RTC fans and the only good thing is...it will definitely cure you of those late night, 5 hour RTC playing sessions. I played this game less than 10 times now, and have given the thing away. What a huge shame.

Good game, but too much like RCT1

People who missed the boat on RCT 1 will probably love this, but others will be disappointed as you can see from reading some of these reviews. RCT 2 seemed more like a chore to play compared to the breezy fun of RCT 1. There are some good improvements including the ability to build a coaster without time or financial worry, and the inclusion of more thrill rides and many more shops and stalls. The graphics don't look better just smaller.
Obviously Chris Sawyer (the developer) said to himself "if it ain't broke don't fix it", but RCT1 is very old now and with the new technology out it seems he could have made more original changes. Like better AI on the park guests for one. Better, not smaller, graphics which could have brought the player closer up into the amusement park creation. Being able to see your shops, stalls, rides and especially your coasters up close would have been great. It's time he take a risk and make wholesale changes. Again though, if you have never played the first this is still a great game. Especially the ability to build your own coaster; the thrill of making a coaster that the people love to ride is a good feeling.

Could Have Been So Much More--But Still Loads of Fun!!

I don't know why I neglected to write this review back in June of 2002 like I should have--oh yeah, come to think of it, it was because I was having WAY TOO MUCH FUN playing this game!! After having demo'd the original ROLLERCOASTER TYCOON (yes, with all of its expansion packs) and getting majorly addicted to it in early-2002, I was at the Tacoma Mall on the morning of June 5th to purchase the eagerly-anticipated ROLLERCOASTER TYCOON 2. Now that I realize that I haven't played it in awhile (and being rather shocked that the price has already plummetted to ten bucks), here's my belated scoop on it: IT ROCKS!

Sure, it does seem kind of similar to the original; nevertheless, it gives you a much greater opportunity to build the park of your dreams MUCH faster than the first edition. Now you don't have to worry so much about that pesky tree here & there; the game's "brain" figures out the little annoying logistical details for you! That makes it much easier to plop down pre-existing rides, as well as to create your own. Also, the varied pre-built coasters (there's many more of them this time around) come with their own paths (which you are free to change once you plop them down); again, this saves a lot of time!

The variety of rollercoasters is much more up-to-date: in addition to the regular Steel-Looping, Inverted and Corkscrew designs from the first game, we now get the Boomerang Shuttle designs (in both regular and Inverted form), Floorless, Flying, Lay-Down, Hyper, Hyper-Twisting and EVEN the Multi-Dimensional Coaster (a la "X" at Six Flags Magic Mountain). You also have much more flexibility when it comes to designing your own rides. In ROLLERCOASTER TYCOON 2, you call the shots now more than ever! Now, if they only allow us to ride our own coasters and give us a 3-D design for ROLLERCOASTER TYCOON 3 when it comes out...

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED, ESPECIALLY FOR SIM BUFFS

Still addictive after all this time...

About a month ago, at the movies to see Meet The Fockers, I recieved a demo CD of Rollercoaster Tycoon 3, which I have yet to play. It reminded me of how many hours at a time I'd spend on Rollercoaster Tycoon 1 and 2. It rekindled my interest and I popped RCT2 in my cd-rom, installed it, and I was on my way.

Once again, I couldn't help myself! I can't believe I almost forgot how unbelievably addicting this game is! It's basically like RCT1 expanded, but, if it ain't broke, why fix it? Designing coasters, rides, customizing paths, stalls, bathrooms, et cetera, are still the standard, of course. Of course, if that gets boring, you can drown guests, crash coasters, stick a little piece of pathway way off in the distance (not connecting to anything) and leave a poor, hapless guest to wander there forever and watch them grow madder and madder... it never gets old.

One gripe, however: building coasters is not as easy as you might have guessed. There's a couple of things that could happen: the train might not make it up a hill (but if there's two trains going, at least you can watch 'em crash and explode), or it might get an intensity rating of "Extreme" or "Ultra-Extreme", which is basically a "TO BE DEMOLISHED" stamp on your coaster (no guest gets on coasters with those ratings). But those are minor.

Anyway, this is definitely a cool sim game. In fact, I'm off to play it right now. Cheers.

More Stuff, But Gameplay Suffers

I was disappointed with RCT2, but not for the same reasons cited by a lot of RCT fans. Yes, the sound and graphics are essentially the same, but that did not bother me.

My biggest gripe was with the game itself. The scenarios are more difficult, too difficult in fact, unless you enjoy constant micromanagement and clicking your way to carpal tunnel syndrome.

In RCT1, you had to work hard to get your parks up and running, but once you got everything right, you could sit back and enjoy your success. That formula has been tossed out with RCT2. You'll lose huge chunks of cash for no apparent reason. Your guests will complain about being sick unless you literally install first aid stations every fifty feet. Your park rating will plummet unless you are constantly clicking away at the mouse. I guess this makes the game more challenging in a tedious kind of way, but the original game was a lot more fun to play.

RCT2 provides new features like a scenario editor, a feature that I find totally unneccesary. You can design new roller coasters outside of the game environment, but they only work on flat ground and are often too expensive to incorporate into the games.

For all the talk about "new roller coasters," you really get the same thing over and over again with a few different types of cars or scenery.

The bottom line for me was that the new additions were nice, but the gameplay is worse. RCT1 had its limits, but it was FUN. RCT2 has more features, but it is a chore to play.

Save your money.

An Upgrade from a Semi-Boring Game

I must admit...Infogrames has definitely made a comeback with RollerCoaster Tycoon ever since it's last debut. It really needed the features and new items, because after a while the game became so repetitive you would end up wasting your time doing the same thing over and over again. Now you can do many different things, with new decorative themes, options (such as the Roller Coaster builiding area, which I think is really neat and useful) and the new choice of lands. Most sequels end up being a bunch of junk with no upgrades whatsoever, but to tell you the truth, this one is worth buying.

This game is great although it is not an advancement over the old game. It plays exactly like the old. It is neat how all the scenarios are visible. You don't have to beat one to get a hidden one. There is also a scenario editor and a coaster editor. The coaster editor though was obviously created to stand up against Disney's Ultimate Ride. While it is great that there is a scenario editor a little more free form would be nice. You can't build things like houses and place buildings like there are in some of the scenarios. All you can really do is decide where you want your entrance to be, how much land you want to own, and lay out roads. All in all, though, this is a fabulous package for any fan of Rollercoaster Tycoon!

The Best PC Game is Back...But...

Like most people that have reviewed this game, I spent that last couple of years addicted to Roller Coaster Tycoon and its two expansion packs. When I first got the game I couldn't put it down. Days flew by and seemed like only hours. Well, I was hoping that this game would carry on in the tradition.

Roller Coaster Tycoon 2 has a few great features that makes it worth the purchase. They are the coaster and scenario editors. You can build your coaster without taking time from playing a scenario. With the scenario editor you can build your own landscape, decide which rides and stands get to be in your park, and you get to choose the themes. Basically, you are allowed to build the park of your dreams. That is the great part of the game and that's why it's worth buying.

Also, there are quite a few new roller coaster and shops/stall designs available. I was disappointed that there weren't more flat rides but that's minor, and that's what expansion packs are for. I read on a PC gaming website that there will be an expansion pack for RCT2, and it's due out in June of 2003. Only time will tell if this is true but I'm sure it is. I just hope that attention is paid to what the fans want since we are the ones buying the game. Instead of just going for our money, make it worth something.

On the down side, the new themes and scenarios are a might disappointing. The themes are very basic and don't go into much detail. Though, I do like the fact that the insects move in the garden themeing. Also, the elevator/oil derrick ride is bad. My people will ride to the top but then not come down. There is no fee to ride but they just stay at the top and begin complaining about not being able to find the exit. This brings the park rating to 0 and I've tried everything to fix it. I eventually just stopped building it becuase it was too aggrevating. I thought the characters were supposed to be more advanced in this new game? Anyway, the majority of the new rides are great!

Lastly, the scenarios are a bit aggrevating. Though, I like the fact that the Six Flags parks are portrayed in this game. I enjoy being able to play them and add on what I want to expand the park with. It's nice to have control of a park that really exists. I also enjoy being able to build my own parks, but the new scenarios in the game are quite challenging. I have a really hard time getting new people to come into the park, and I also have a hard time pleasing them. This wasn't a problem with the first game or its expansion packs. I have lost the majority of the scenarios becuase I can't get people into the parks or I can't make them happy enough. Maybe that's just a personal problem but like I said, I completed every level of the first 3 games. Overall, this game is good, but I recommend the original RCT and its expansion packs to first-time users. There is more enjoyment to be had with those. Bring on the RCT2 expansion pack, though. I can't wait for June 2003 to see what's new!
