one of the best!

I bought Tokyo Extreme Racer about a week after i bought dreamcast (in october) and have not stoped playing it. I forgot about the other two games i had and just played this. The details of the car and course are great. the cars look as realistic as you can get. This is one of the best racing games yet. Once you get used to the handling the game gets fun. You race around a tokyo highway looking for other souped up cars to race. its not like other racing games were you race to first place. this game its one on one. The only bad thing is it has only one track. The best part is tweaking up your car with realistic upgrades. The game is relitivly easy to beat but once you do you just keep on racing to buy more cars. Right now i have 15 of them and stil going. I you love cars as much as me then you this game is a must to buy!

Highly underrated

While most racing games seem to try to appeal to racing game fans, Tokyo Xtreme Racer appeals to real *drivers*. I don't think I've ever played a racing game that gave me this realistic a *feeling* of driving - the physics may not be 100% accurate, there is no car damage - but the game just feels like being out at 2 AM on a Saturday night driving around the highway. It's street racing, not rally or league racing, and that's a style of racing not often simulated in video games. Ignore the criticism of there being only one track (there are actually two - the "mirrored" track is really a totally different track, as the highway is not always connected in each direction); it is so large that in my 40+ hours of play I still have not fully memorized both the inner and outer tracks. Opponent AI is tough - you really need to *race* these guys (and girls). These are no Ridge Racer style place-holder opponents. In short, this game feels like real street racing and is a blast to play - anybody who loves real driving and is looking for something different in a racing game should buy this title.

Finally, a REAL "racing" game!

One thing I dislike about most other racing games is the fact that you usually blow your opponents away and you don't actually "race" them. Tokyo Xtreme Racer changes all that, and I love it.

Race on the Tokyo Highway at night, searching for rival car gang members to race. This is the real deal...I'm in love with the adrenaline pumping, neck-to-neck races. No way you're going to lap your opponent here! The "battles" are often truly fights to the finish, with you and your opponent nudging ahead only to be knocked back.

Use the prize money you gain from racing your opponents to upgrade and purchase different import cars and then tune them up to your liking. You can even customize the color, bumpers, headlights, hood, grill, etc. to your liking.

Graphically, TXR is near pefect. Great detail on the cars and the environment, great light sourcing. There's some slowdown once in a while, but it passes. Sound is about what you'd expect from a racing game, and the music ranges from memorable to bland. Unfortunately, control scheme setup is limited, but it's not a big deal.

Some will debate that the game isn't deep, since there is only one track (two if you count driving on the second circuit), but it's not easily mastered. Others might not like the gameplay's basic setup (drive around, find the next car, race).

To sum up, if you want a racing game with hundreds of cars and tracks, there are other games out there. If you want to try a little one-on-one racing, this is the game for you. It's pretty much hit or miss...I love it.

If you are inspired by amazing graphics and realistic gameplay, don't miss this one! The rendering is amazing, up to the streaks your tail lights leave at night. TER offers both an arcade type and a quest mode for hours of play. Race against opponents, collect your credits and upgrade your vehicle (and there's plenty of them).

On the flip side, as impressive as this game is, you are always racing at night. It would be nice to see some daylight once in a while (I guess no one comes out in the day in Tokyo). Also, running around on the same track loses it's excitement after a while. If not for the amazing graphics, this game would probably be a 3 star. Nevertheless, it's worth it, especially for all you auto enthusiasts out there!

Racing at its BEST

I for one read the many reviews on this game and decided to buy a used version just in case I didn't like it. However, to my surprise I loved it. I truly feel that the people that are bashing this game have neither the patience nor the skill to play this game. It is the most difficult racing game I have played to date forget Grand Turismo...it's like playing Resident Evil compared to Sonic. The one track feature is false there are two tracks that expand as you win. As you keep playing you'll race against hundreds of different opponents. The coolest feature is eventually racing so-called Gang leaders that have "mint" looking cars that are completely distinct from cars you can design. Watch out for the Devas and Devils you'll know what I mean when you start playing.

Great real life driving dream

I love this game ! Many racing games out there always focus on many tracks and cars. but hey in real life we alway speed down that same highway in our neighbourhood. You have to set your expectation right. This game is about cool modified import cars where you can take and race down that familar highway you always used to travel from office to home. So the main focus is on buying import car and modify it the way you like both performance and look. Then take it out for a spin on the highway trying to win those who have the same interest as you. The gameplay is exciting and could get fraustrated when you are trying to beat someone who have a better machine but poorer driving skill then you. So if you lose, then go back home, buy more parts, tweak some setting and back on the road for a revenge. really cool The bad side is that the car bounce when you hit the wall. But this is game and you could not expect to call a trow truck when you hit the wall at 150 mph. The race got to go on....

One of the most under-rated game

I know that this game has come out long time ago and there's no real point to write another review. However, I was compelled to write a review for this very particular game since I has enjoyed so much out of this gem though I'm not a racing game fan.

The reason I've bought this game was because of its admission price. I didn't expect much from this game other than just what you would normally expect from a typical driving game. I'm not a big racing game fan, but I just couldn't stop playing this game for hours and hours. I have played up to Gran Turismo 3, Ridge Racer 5, and other than Ridge Racer 4 Type R(with simple storyline with jazzy music), I really couldn't get into it. I mean, of course, they boast top, top notch graphic, realism in physics/control, and awesome intro with intuitive intro music (look at import GT3), but it was all about where to slow down, where to cut on the curve, going same course from starting line to finish line along with not-so-intelligent AI again and again.

However, Tokyo Xtreme Racer just blew my mind away in game play factor. The racing takes only during night time (which is a perfect atmosphere for street racing), and there's no starting/finishing line, but wherever you are challenging a rival or being challenged. You see, the awesome thing about this game is that it's not about where to slow down and where to cut on the curve, but it's about real racing. Seriously, I didn't expect much from this game but had to finish it in couple days. It is not about cutting that finish line first, but rather staying ahead of your rival for a particular time, depleting your rival's meter bar slowly or quickly depends on the distant between two racers. And talk about awesome AI, Heeeww, seriously, you really have to fight with your sweaty hands to prevent your rival from trying to get ahead of you. You will know what I mean.

I guess this is a kind of game for certain gamers, not for everyone. I recommended this game strongly to few friends, and they didn't like it much, going back to Gran Turismo 3. This game does well presentation of night street racing with just right atmosphere. Once you beat your rivals, you will have to race against the clan's leader, (clan's leaders do this flashy-entranance) and you will get their information once you beat them. I still remember racing against this car at least over 20 times, every single race with this car was so close, i got really ticked off. After I beat this car, and looked over the information and this is what it said; she goes to jr college and borrows her boy friend's car without asking him. Man, I felt almost, almost like asking for her number since I got this 'bond' or 'tie' with this racer after doing 20 real close racings, and she's just one of them.

I know this game is not for everyone, so rent it first if you wanna give it a try. But come'on, it's not that expensive these days and why don't you just get your new or used copy? Definitely better than Gran Turismo 3 in some department. I know what I'm saying is blasphemy for GT3 worshipers out there, but I wouldn't hegitate to say that Tokyo Xtreme Racer holds its own place in racing along with Gran Turismo series. Enjoy it-

Excelent game. Superb graphics. Limited race tracks.

I belive this game to be the closest to reality in high speed-street racing. For those of us who just love to race down Interstates and Federal highways, this is a good alternative to avoid the tickets! You are able to select many "real" cars, with life like characteristics as their real-wolrd counterparts, i.g., a 94 Honda will NEVER accelerate faster than a 2000 Eclipse. Good gameplay, excellent graphics. Mechanics lovers: you can customize the internal parts of your car, such as suspension, brakes, aeros (spoiler, fenders, lights), etc. Definitely addictive, though gameplay (and the two tracks) become repetitive after a while.

You'll either love it or you'll hate it...

I love it!

Tokyo Extreme is like one of those movies that the critics downplay, but turns out to be a cult classic. Quite simply, it is the most addictive game I've ever played. If your tired of Grand Prix style racing games, check this one out...The cars you race are real cars (although with no logos, so you'll have to figure out what is what for yourself) and they've been designed to handle and perform like their actual counterparts. Really, the detail that went into this game is amazing. And it takes a while to beat, like a great game should!

Alot of people that have played it thought it was boring. It's definitely a game for the "hardcore racer" as put by another reviewer. I think your actual driving style (and/or temperment) must fit this game in order to enjoy it. Me? I love ripping it up in my real car, and I love this game. But if you don't drive in the fast lane, don't gun it at yellow lights, don't speed into a turn just to see how fast you can make it out, then you might not like this game.

Like I said, you'll either love it, or you'll hate it.

The sequel is coming out tommorow, so I'd throw down the extra doe for it. It's supposed to have all the things that the original doesn't, the reasons why I gave it four stars instead of five. The original only has one loop of highway you can race around, and can behave buggy when the dreamcast heats up after hours of play. The sequel has more roads, more cars, and hopefully, no bugs. Aim for that one.

Enjoy. (It would be perfect for internet multiplayer, hopefully the sequel will have that as well.)

This is an awsome Racing game, Lots of cars to choose from and you can modify the cars and upgrade to better cars as you win each Race. Some people are saying there is only one track, Wake up people and open your eyes. You start with one track and as win each race, more tracks become available. I got this game for a Christmas present and I am very satisfied with the game. It has sweet controls and it looks sharp on the big screen. If i was to say anything bad about this game at all i'd just say that the developers could have done alittle bit better job of Highlighting the sharp curbs or Useing different and or better color selection for seperation on the corners so that you can see them comming alittle sooner. I have played many Racing games on different platforms and this game is right up there with the best of them............
