I bought Tokyo Extreme Racer about a week after i bought dreamcast (in october) and have not stoped playing it. I forgot about the other two games i had and just played this. The details of the car and course are great. the cars look as realistic as you can get. This is one of the best racing games yet. Once you get used to the handling the game gets fun. You race around a tokyo highway looking for other souped up cars to race. its not like other racing games were you race to first place. this game its one on one. The only bad thing is it has only one track. The best part is tweaking up your car with realistic upgrades. The game is relitivly easy to beat but once you do you just keep on racing to buy more cars. Right now i have 15 of them and stil going. I you love cars as much as me then you this game is a must to buy!
Highly underrated

While most racing games seem to try to appeal to racing game fans, Tokyo Xtreme Racer appeals to real *drivers*. I don't think I've ever played a racing game that gave me this realistic a *feeling* of driving - the physics may not be 100% accurate, there is no car damage - but the game just feels like being out at 2 AM on a Saturday night driving around the highway. It's street racing, not rally or league racing, and that's a style of racing not often simulated in video games. Ignore the criticism of there being only one track (there are actually two - the "mirrored" track is really a totally different track, as the highway is not always connected in each direction); it is so large that in my 40+ hours of play I still have not fully memorized both the inner and outer tracks. Opponent AI is tough - you really need to *race* these guys (and girls). These are no Ridge Racer style place-holder opponents. In short, this game feels like real street racing and is a blast to play - anybody who loves real driving and is looking for something different in a racing game should buy this title.

I for one read the many reviews on this game and decided to buy a used version just in case I didn't like it. However, to my surprise I loved it. I truly feel that the people that are bashing this game have neither the patience nor the skill to play this game. It is the most difficult racing game I have played to date forget Grand Turismo...it's like playing Resident Evil compared to Sonic. The one track feature is false there are two tracks that expand as you win. As you keep playing you'll race against hundreds of different opponents. The coolest feature is eventually racing so-called Gang leaders that have "mint" looking cars that are completely distinct from cars you can design. Watch out for the Devas and Devils you'll know what I mean when you start playing.
Possible the the most greatest racing ever...

Tough, i only tryed the PS2 version, but i can imagine that the DC and PS2 is just the same game. Tough, the graphics is not of Gran Turismo 3 value, this game rocks! It has a original game concept (something we havent seen in a racing game for a long time). The game is based upon the street racers of Tokyo, and how they race. You run around in the highways of Tokyo, using your lights to signal the desired opponoment you wish to race against, and if that opponoment accepts, its pedal-to-the-medal baby. Not only are capable to tune the engine and power of the veichle, but also to tune the looks of it with side skirts, wings and new tyres. Trust me... TXR is one of kind... It's both fun, addicting and entertaining. But, dont rely on the multiplayer tough, cause that part is really lame. Also the music could have been ten times better.
TXR is a superb buy you'll never run bored by...
One of the most under-rated game

I know that this game has come out long time ago and there's no real point to write another review. However, I was compelled to write a review for this very particular game since I has enjoyed so much out of this gem though I'm not a racing game fan.
The reason I've bought this game was because of its admission price. I didn't expect much from this game other than just what you would normally expect from a typical driving game. I'm not a big racing game fan, but I just couldn't stop playing this game for hours and hours. I have played up to Gran Turismo 3, Ridge Racer 5, and other than Ridge Racer 4 Type R(with simple storyline with jazzy music), I really couldn't get into it. I mean, of course, they boast top, top notch graphic, realism in physics/control, and awesome intro with intuitive intro music (look at import GT3), but it was all about where to slow down, where to cut on the curve, going same course from starting line to finish line along with not-so-intelligent AI again and again.
However, Tokyo Xtreme Racer just blew my mind away in game play factor. The racing takes only during night time (which is a perfect atmosphere for street racing), and there's no starting/finishing line, but wherever you are challenging a rival or being challenged. You see, the awesome thing about this game is that it's not about where to slow down and where to cut on the curve, but it's about real racing. Seriously, I didn't expect much from this game but had to finish it in couple days. It is not about cutting that finish line first, but rather staying ahead of your rival for a particular time, depleting your rival's meter bar slowly or quickly depends on the distant between two racers. And talk about awesome AI, Heeeww, seriously, you really have to fight with your sweaty hands to prevent your rival from trying to get ahead of you. You will know what I mean.
I guess this is a kind of game for certain gamers, not for everyone. I recommended this game strongly to few friends, and they didn't like it much, going back to Gran Turismo 3. This game does well presentation of night street racing with just right atmosphere. Once you beat your rivals, you will have to race against the clan's leader, (clan's leaders do this flashy-entranance) and you will get their information once you beat them. I still remember racing against this car at least over 20 times, every single race with this car was so close, i got really ticked off. After I beat this car, and looked over the information and this is what it said; she goes to jr college and borrows her boy friend's car without asking him. Man, I felt almost, almost like asking for her number since I got this 'bond' or 'tie' with this racer after doing 20 real close racings, and she's just one of them.
I know this game is not for everyone, so rent it first if you wanna give it a try. But come'on, it's not that expensive these days and why don't you just get your new or used copy? Definitely better than Gran Turismo 3 in some department. I know what I'm saying is blasphemy for GT3 worshipers out there, but I wouldn't hegitate to say that Tokyo Xtreme Racer holds its own place in racing along with Gran Turismo series. Enjoy it-

I purchased this game yesterday afternoon and spent most of the night playing. The gameplay is engaging from the second you start to play. I strongly reccomend this one.

This game is great with the different selection of cars and options on cars. It's great to race with my Acura NSX and then switch and race with my 300 Twin Turbo. The replay mode is also fun to watch and shows off the Dreamcast's abilities. The game really gets your blood pumping when in the middle of a race another car pulls out in front of you (kinda like real life) and causes you to go from almost winning to losing. The games does only offer two tracks (same track w/ different directions), but the track is several miles long and is fun to race on. Only problem w/ game is that there is noticeable slowdowns when there are 4 or more cars bunched together on the screen.
Extremely Underrated and Realistic

Those are the 3 adjectives that describe tokyo extreme racer. Most websites and/or game magazines will say that the game is bad. I love this game to death. I love it more than i do sonic adventure. It's replay value is Off 'da hook! (if you like this concept) The game design and graphics are superb, and if you are an import car enthusiast like i am, you must buy a dreamcast and tokyo extreme racer. Right now in the game i have purchased a Nissan Skyline and an Acura NSX. the handling is very lifelike, and i actually think that it is a plus that your cars cannot get damaged, because in the game you spend so much money on them. Anyways, i love this game. You will too if you are into this. In other words: For enthusiasts only.

This game is great! possibly the best racing game ever. With 60 frames per second the graphics are incredible. I played games like sega gt and stuff but they're nothing TOKYO EXTREME RACER. What much more can I say this game is incredible. The handling is great, you can get incredible speed, you race people on the freeway how often do you do that. Over all I give this game 5 stars.
