Great Game

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 3 / 3

This game is great with the different selection of cars and options on cars. It's great to race with my Acura NSX and then switch and race with my 300 Twin Turbo. The replay mode is also fun to watch and shows off the Dreamcast's abilities. The game really gets your blood pumping when in the middle of a race another car pulls out in front of you (kinda like real life) and causes you to go from almost winning to losing. The games does only offer two tracks (same track w/ different directions), but the track is several miles long and is fun to race on. Only problem w/ game is that there is noticeable slowdowns when there are 4 or more cars bunched together on the screen.

Extremely Underrated and Realistic

Those are the 3 adjectives that describe tokyo extreme racer. Most websites and/or game magazines will say that the game is bad. I love this game to death. I love it more than i do sonic adventure. It's replay value is Off 'da hook! (if you like this concept) The game design and graphics are superb, and if you are an import car enthusiast like i am, you must buy a dreamcast and tokyo extreme racer. Right now in the game i have purchased a Nissan Skyline and an Acura NSX. the handling is very lifelike, and i actually think that it is a plus that your cars cannot get damaged, because in the game you spend so much money on them. Anyways, i love this game. You will too if you are into this. In other words: For enthusiasts only.

Good game for the dedicated gamer

I've had this game since it came out, and all I can say is that it's a good game, but only for the truly dedicated with very long attention spans. Why? Well, there are only two versions of the same track, and you can find yourself racing against the same opponents multiple times to save up money for cars and car upgrades. This game is great, however, if you like the "thrill of the hunt," chasing down rival cars and challeneing them to highway drag races. The graphics are clean, but pale in comparison to other DC games, and slowdown does occur in rare instances. The control is good, but braking is totally useless in this game, so stick to letting go of the accelerator and steering clear. Buy this game if you're a hardcore racing game fan who "races to race" like myself. Otherwise, avoid this game.

For die-hard racers

My main problem with this game is that the driving physics are not very good and the cars are generally difficult to control. At slow speeds cars do not have the turning radius they need to maneuver well around obstacles. I managed to get two cars pretty much maxed out parts-wise, but no matter what settings I used I just couldn't get comfortable with the driving. When you're first starting out it's easy to beat opponents, but as they get tougher the game's lack of control really prevents you from doing well. If you are a die-hard driving-game fanatic with quick reflexes and lots of time and patience, then you'll love all of the customization the game allows. The use of only one track (in two directions) will turn off most casual racers, but may appeal to those who like to know every square inch of a track, which you need to know to beat the better computer-controlled cars. I didn't have a problem with there only being one track, and found that the game had a pretty good vibe. It's a game you can really get into if you are good at it. I reached a point where it just seemed too much like work tinkering with the cars and trying to get more control out of them.

Another good racing game...

Well, this game is an import, so you know what to expect(Japanese writing, cars, you name it, it's Japanese). You don't need anything special to play it, so don't worry about that. It is real fun, if your a good driver. You need the brakes for this one, but they don't work all that well, so you also need to know when to decelerate. You only start out with 2 cars, and 2 tracks, so you need to earn the others. For $20, I'd say it is a pretty good deal. If ya got it, bust out the credit card and buy it!

Game that is for the RACERS!

We got this game as soon as we bought the Dreamcast. When you start the game it is kind of hard to get used to, but after a little while you start racin' like a pro. I passed the whole game and it takes you a long time. The graphics on this game are awesome, and the things that you can do to your car are just amazing. The music is not the greatest but it grows on you. One tip, fix up the car that you buy right in the beginning and fix that up and race that until you get about 250,000 to 500,000 credits and buy the NSX and fix that up, but don't race that keep goin' until you have fixed it up all the way, and then you are set to win the game, also memorize one track and race that all the time.

I rate this a five and a game that everyone should buy.

Nice graphics, few choices

The graphics are great but the limited track and repetitive route lead to a quick loss in interest. The great graphics and driving "feeling" are soon not enough to hold your interest. Also, there is no option to steer with either the thumb controller or the arrow pad, you are forced to the thumb controller which I do not prefer.

I purchased this game yesterday afternoon and spent most of the night playing. The gameplay is engaging from the second you start to play. I strongly reccomend this one.

Lets talk about REALISM

People are saying that this game isnt realistic as far as driving goes yes it is. I race cars for fun and I tell you when you speed the acceleration up it goes faster when you put the dampners to hard you reduce your oversteer creating more understeer which in a rear wheel drive car makes it less likely to fish tail. Now people also say that there is no damage when you hit a wall. Well as I and my friends have noticed there is damage it doesnt show you or say anything about it but you'll notice your vehicle doesnt accelerate and it doesnt reach as high of speeds anymore after you race about 10 cars. I think that shows realism. I also believe this game is very accurate with its horse power ratings and its body modifactions and engine components. You can raise and lower ride hieght, increase the turbo boost, change the quickness and balance of brakes. The options available in this game are astounding and the graphics I must say are pretty impressive too. I also find that this game is even more realistic when you take into account it is modeled right after the streets and highways of tokyo. As far as the tracks go. It's one big circuit you start out on a small portion you beat so many gangs and rivals then it expands it does this 4 times at least ive seen it expand 4 times so far. I still havent seen the end of this game. I just felt i would tell you all about the game and what it is really like not about what the others told you. If you buy this game i suggest you start with the lancer and if you get far enough and beat the first speed king then buy his skyline for 500 grand its a good bet cause it goes up to 1100 hp.

Nice graphics but...

Very good graphics (supposedly 60 FPS) but only one track and only at night. Replay mode is fun but very time limited. Skip this one and look for a better one.
