Is it a game or a movie

4 Rating: 4, Useful: 0 / 0

At 30+ years young, I'm not much of a gamer. I bought this game because I was always fond of Syphon Filter. I was not disappointed. In easy mode it took about six hours to complete 50% of the game and 13 hours more to finish it. The cut scenes really help this game play like a movie with our whole family watching (and assisting) the entire time. And there's not much quality difference between the cut scenes and the game play.

One problem I have in PS3 from PS2 is the use of the second analog stick to control the camera. It's great to look at the awesome scenary but I which I could lock the camera occasionally.

Great Action/Adventure Game... Heavy on the Action

Let me start off by saying that this is a great game; I generally have a hard time completing games because they're either too hard or I lose interest. I finished this one, however.

Adventure is my favorite genre for video games and good ones are few and far between on consoles. When I saw that this was (supposedly) in that genre and was garnering very positive reviews, I decided to pick it up (along with a PS3, but that's another story...) and once I started playing through, I quickly realized that this game was a little light on the adventure and chock full of action. Oh, there's an adventure story here, and a good one to boot, but what we have here is essentially a 3rd-person shooter.

Don't get me wrong, there are plenty of very well-designed cliff-scaling, wall-climbing, chandelier-swinging moments, but those are quickly interspersed between complex bouts of shoot-outs with scores of baddies.

Having said that, the AI is generally good and the levels are set-up in such a way that you'll have plenty of places to duck behind in order to dispatch the enemies. As you progress, the enemies do get tougher, but never require more than 3 non-headshots to kill (I've completed it on 'easy' so far).

The controls are solid as well. The aiming is very accurate and for the most part, Nate moves just as you want him to. There were a couple of times however, where I'd push in the direction I'd want him to jump, and he'd jump off at some bizarre angle and completely miss the ledge I was aiming for and fall to his death. This wasn't a big issue though.

As I mentioned before, the story is very good and easy to follow. The voice acting is done especially well and is very convincing. The graphics are also very impressive. When you run, you can see Nate's shirt crinkling with his movements and when he gets wet, his clothes get wet too. And when you move through brush and other small plant-life, you don't just clip through them, they move with you.

All in all, this is a great game. I personally would have liked to see more adventure and less action (it's about 20% / 80% respectively, in my opinion) but I still really enjoyed myself playing it. If you're a fan of action games, this is definitely a must-own.

This is an amaizing game

This is truly an amazing game and really showcases the PlayStation 3 hardware. I really hope this is only the first chapter in the "Uncharted" series because I want more.

Great fun, light-hearted story, and breathtaking visuals.

Uncharted was a blast, there isn't any other way I can put it. The lush and meticulously detailed areas really make you feel like you're on a pulp action adventure very reminiscent of films like Indiana Jones and The Mummy.

The graphics look fantastic. The art style they went for is a very colorful and vibrant one, and they executed it to perfection. My only complaint about the graphics is that Drake clips right through each and every piece of foliage in the game. For as beautiful as it is, that's just tragic.

The combat is a lot of fun also, mainly because it challenges you enough to where you have to be careful, but offers enough options for variety and bravado if you so desire. The melee combat is very simple, responsive, and because of the fluid, visceral animation sequences, it's also very satisfying. The gun combat has tight controls and accurate hit detection. Honestly not much more I could ask for in this department. There is an ample variety of weapons and the cover mechanic is simple and functions very well.

All in all, a very satisfying experience, and I'm eagerly anticipating the sequel.

Great game

This game was a very pleasant surprise to me. I enjoyed not only the gameplay, which was very natural and responsive, but even found myself enjoying the story and the voice overs. I have never before found myself invested in what happens to the characters in a video game, but Uncharted managed to do that for me. There is plenty of action, and to me one of the best things about this game was that there were no boss fights. I am so sick and tired of boss fights that just get in the way of the flow of a game/story. Here not only does the story flow right along, but the game itself just "moves along". Very few places in the game actually take you through some loading experience. Most transistions from gameplay to cut scene are seamless, and feel very natural. Also, the fact that you can only hold onto one gun, one rifle, and 4 grenades adds some realism to the game. Add to that that part of surviving any shootout is getting out from your cover to collect some ammo from fallen enemies or from various "caches" and it begins to feel more like what it might be like to actually be in a gunfight like this.

The only negative, and it is a slight one, that I can come up with is that it might be nice to feature a little more in the puzzle department, but I wouldn't want a whole lot more.

The ending was just right for me in terms of what you have to do to beat the game (again, sick of the boss fights), and the story also had a nice endiing with enough left open for an obvious sequel.

One other note to maybe help others decide on getting this game. I am partial to third person shooters (well, games with a third person perspective in general), and don't really care for first person shooters. If you are the other way around, you may not enjoy this game as much.

Another Near Perfect PS3 Exclusive

Sony is on a roll with awesome exclusives (Resistance: FOM and Ratchet & Clank) and Uncharted: Drake's Fortune is yet another one. I thoroughly enjoyed playing this PS3 game and my wife even got hooked watching the events unfold. This is as good as third-person games get.

3 - Average
4 - Good
5 - Great

Story/Characters - 5

Playability/Controls - 4
Overall - 5

What you may like about the game:

- Immersion as if you are playing an interactive movie with great dialogue (the voice acting is some of the best) and perfect character animations
- There are a handful of weapons, most notable being the sniper rifle and the grenade launcher, but each has its own strengths and weaknesses like real life weapons. (The reloading animations are very good.)
- Plot twists and an engaging story (one hour of in-game engine cinematics)
- Some puzzle solving, mixed with adventure, and thrown together with a lot of action, equals a pretty well rounded game. (The variety is nice, as certain areas you have to climb and figure out how to get from point A to point B.)
- Interaction with non-player characters keeps it moving. (The jeep chase is one example of a hair-raising action sequence.)
- Perhaps the most amazing water effects in any game. (Drake's clothes get wet when he dives into water and then they slowly dry--really amazing effect that adds incredible detail to the graphics.)
- A lot of action, whether gun fights or close quarter combat. (Some people complain about the game having too many enemies to fight, but it really adds to the feeling of Drake up against overwhelming odds.)
- Musical score is very good and definitely is reminiscent of a Hollywood action movie score.
- Roughly 10 hours of game play (Again, for those who play games always on "easy" and run through the game like their house is on fire, it could easily be 6-8 hours.)

What you may dislike about the game:

- Headshots are not easy to pull off as the enemies move very erratically and sometimes super-humanly fast. (The sniper-rifle is your best bet.)
- Some character animations can be "jumpy," but not terribly so.
- The puzzles are not hard to figure out.
- Hand-to-hand combat is never really necessary and when performed, it can lead to a quick death, especially when trying to execute combos. (I died more often trying hand-to-hand combat, than the most fierce gunfights.)
- Only one vehicle mission where you can control the vehicle
- Very few locations and some of the tunnel or underground locations are too dark, with the tiny flashlight Drake is equipped with
- Game is a bit too easy, even on Hard.
- Use of Sixaxis is really an after thought and is more frustrating than useful while trying to keep Drake balanced on fallen trees and beams.

considering a 4 star... but benefit of the doubt wins.. 5 star!!

I wanted to give this game a 4 star because it gets repititive. It's a 3rd person shooter, with a shooting-driving sequence, lots of climbing, more 3rd person shooting, a little bit of swimming... and yea.. there really isn't anything new about this shooter.

However... I can really tell they put alot.. and i mean... alot of hard work and alot of time into this game.

1- It looks incredibly awesome. If its not the best looking game on the PS3 or any other console... it's definately up there.

2- It's a hollywood movie you play.
The script was very well written.
The voices match perfectly with the characters.
The story line is interesting.
Explosions, big booms and guns!

3- Every game has bugs (aka problems), but i found very few problems in this game... and as a old video game tester... its difficult to push out a game with few bugs in it.

i can't wait till part 2 comes out.

The best Adventure game on PS3

This game have everything from action, adventure, great story, puzzle solving, and great soundtrack. This is the only game I've played where the whole story and acting feels like a movie and yes, the acting was done by real actors with motion-capture (mocaps). The game is about 8 hours long and it is the most fun 8 hours I've played in a long time.

The game really utilizes PS3's amazing powers. The enemy AI's start ganging up on Drake as soon as you take too much time ducking behind a certain cover. So you always have to think ahead and use your bullets wisely before being able to reload the gun. The duck-and-cover system is similar to Gears of War. Also the game rewards players for doing certain moves # of times or collecting treasures so the player must be more vigilant in doing moves different ways and looking around nook and crannies to find more treasures to unlock more special features.

Truly a great game.

It's like a movie
