I was first introduced to GH by my cousin on the PS2. I was too intimidated to actually play it at her house, but I was intrigued. The next week, my stepson tried it at a sleepover and wanted to get it for himself. So, we bought it for his XBOX 360. I immediately became addicted to playing it (is there a GH rehab?), and found it to be a great bonding experience for our whole family. My stepson and I would stay up til all hours of the night battling each other. This coming from a 33 yo female who has never found a video game I desired to play. Overall, the game is great fun and satisfies the "closet rocker" in me. HAHA.
When my stepson went back home after spending the summer with us, we ended up buying the PS2 version since we don't have an XBOX. I expected it to be exactly the same game, but it is not. There are a few very disappointing differences between the XBOX and PS2 versions.
1. Some songs are missing from the PS2 version. The ones I can think of off hand is "Dead" which is one of my favorites to play, and "Possum Kingdom". There may be some others, but I can't remember.
2. The songs are in a different order. While this doesn't seem like a big deal on Medium, this is quite a big deal when moving on to the Hard level. On the XBOX the song "Woman" is on level 3 I think. But on PS2, "Woman" is on level 1. This was a very hard song for me to pass on the XBOX. On the PS2 version, this song is on level 1. So, in order to progress to the next level, you must beat this relatively difficult song. However, there are several songs on level 2 that are easier to play. It seems like there was more thought into the ordering of the songs on XBOX.
3. In the Quick Play mode on PS2, you must progress through the songs in order just like in a career. However, on XBOX, all the songs are available in the Quick Play mode. So, if you can't pass a level in your career, you can go to Quick Play and see the upcoming songs and actually play them on any difficulty level. You can go to the Practice mode on PS2 and select the song/difficulty level, but it's just not the same to me. This is probably just a personal preference because I experienced the XBOX version first, but it still bothers me.
4. There is not Career Score in the PS2 version. In the XBOX version, the game keeps track of your career score in which it adds the highest score for each song and each level. When competing against other players, this is the easiest indicator of who is winning. For instance, my stepson had breezed through more songs than I did, but I had a higher career score showing that I had played better on the songs I played. This feature is NOT available on the PS2 version. There is NO way to compare the progress of one player over another.
Aside from the differences in the game, there are also some significant differences in the guitar itself.
1. The PS2 version seems to be a little smaller than the XBOX version. As a result, I seems to have more cramping in my fret hand. It just doesn't seem to be as ergonomically correct as the XBOX version. My 7 yo son even commented on this.
2. The strum bar is way more sensitive than the XBOX version. Sometimes this is a good thing, but more often this works to my disadvantage. I sometimes hit the strum bar without meaning to, thus counting as a missed note. Also, I frequently strum too hard, so the strum bar bounces back and actually strums upward. This also counts as a missed note.
3. The fret buttons seems to have more resistance. sometimes I think I am pushing a fret button, but I'm not pushing hard enough, so it counts as a missed note. Also, I often have difficulty pushing 2 or more the fret buttons at the same time for chords.
This sounds like I'm just a sorry GH player, but keep in mind that I earned all 5 stars on medium on the XBOX version of GH. Rather, these are actual differences I have noticed between the 2 versions that seem to affect my accuracy. I wish I had the XBOX version, but I'm not willing to shell out $400 for the system. Overall, the PS2 version is a good compromise and those only playing the PS2 version will not know the difference. Secretly, I can't wait until the Wii version comes out. Then I will have a reason to upgrade to a Wii system.
Will this game work on the PS3?

My son (age 11) ordered this game with some of his Christmas money. He absolutely LOVES it. He would play this for hours at a time, if I let him. I must admit, I enjoy listening to the songs too. He has a little competition going with some of the other neighborhood rockers. They try to see who can get the most points. Nice game, no shooting, killing or maiming! I would recommend this one.

Great game. It can get very addicting. Make sure you buy two guitars so that the game will be even better. Read reviews on wireless guitars if that's what you're planning to purchase.

I bought one for my nephew, who plays a bit of guitar, and one for my son, who loves guitar, but not quite enough to practice it. Both boys love it -- lots of fun and immediate gratification for the fast little gamer fingers.
Must buy for the rocker wanna be
