I LOVED Guitar Hero 1. I bought a PS2 just so I could play Guitar Hero, so I was really anticipating the release of GH2. On the positive side, the game play itself is much improved. I like the fact that the songs are broken down into sections so you can see how many notes you got right and where the problems are. BUT. The song list is too obscure. The whole POINT of GH is that you can play the songs you've loved and known. I only knew about 8 of the songs on the whole list. The songs I don't know are pretty hard core and I'm not very motivated to learn them. VERY disappointed. Next time please - less metal, more favourites PLEASE!
i would have LOVED to like this game

i really tried to like this game. i did. but the fact that you are forced to play as a chef for the first few levels was something i could not get passed. also, there were no good songs!!! when will they add GOOD songs like "heart shaped box" or "girl you really got me now" or even "shout at the devil"!! no, they REFUSE to add such songs, and instead insist upon making you play along to such garbage as 50 cent, eminem, and fort minor. if you hate rap, stay far FAR away from this game!!! if you actually like rock music, play 50 cent:bulletproof.

Do not buy this game. It is a huge waste of money. Try real guitar or bass instead.
Good game, but....

The guitar controller that came with this game is a piece of junk. Right out of the package, the strum bar didn't work when strummed down. Only when strummed up. Needless to say, it's being returned. Not really worth the price, if you ask me.

How could I possibly review a game I have not received??!!!! I have tried to contact anyone who may have info, to no avail. It has been over 40 days since the order was placed, is there no follow up anywhere? Or is it take the money and run?! Furthermore, wouldn't it make sense for amazon to check on the status of an order before contacting me - for - of all things - A REVIEW? Insulting. I did quite a bit of shopping with amazon this year, and it will be my last. Now let's see if a human actually reads this.

The strum bar broke after a couple hours of use. Exchanged for a new guitar. We'll see how long the new one lasts.

I purchased the item for my daughter. The "guitar" arrived broken, because of poor packing. I hope that the "sender" remembers to recontact us so we can get another one.
Very Disappointing Sequel

Let's start with the good: If you're familiar with the first Guitar Hero's multiplayer mode, you will REALLY appreciate the sequel's Pro-Face Off mode, which allows both players to play the whole song through (without switching back and forth on one track). The great thing is you can play the whole song through without worrying about failing, since you're just going head to head. It makes for a fun time. Also good is the new practice mode, which really helps you get through the tougher solos.
The bad: Personally, I think that the song choices are sadly lacking for the second edition. Whereas even the lesser known bands and songs chosen for the first edition were enjoyable to listen to and fun to play, the second edition's offerings even from the big name bands are often much too long and just plain boring. (Note, Free Bird isn't bad. It's one of the exceptions, fortunately.)
The ugly: The production value of the songs in GH2 is MUCH MUCH ... *MUCH* lower than those in the first game. The covers are just not performed as well, and the overall *sound* of the songs is pretty weak.
Overall, the game is a pretty poor followup to the first. You might want to rent this one instead of buying.

Great game but it froze up a lot in "tour" mode. Had to return it. Amazon handled return nicely & refunded all charges.
Really fun but song selection is lacking.

Let me preface this by saying that I'm 27 years old and I was familiar with roughly 80% of the new songs, but awareness and enjoyment don't always go hand in hand.
I read a lengthy preview of GH2 in Electronic Gaming Monthly and the designers stated that the reason you won't find classic Metallica/Zeppelin/AC-DC songs(etc....)in this game is because the rights are either too expensive or they are shared by band members scattered all over the earth.
Fair enough, but given the success of the franchise I would hope that for GH3 they pony up the cash for premiere songs.
No one will ever confuse "Tatooed Love Boys", "Psychobilly freakout", "Crazy on you" and "Rock this town" with "Master of Puppets", "2 minutes to midnight", "Sultans of swing" or "Stairway to Heaven".
My one other complaint is that for the experienced GH player, the expert mode is a bit on the easy side. The main reason why is that "Star Power" makes complicated passages and solos way too easy, which discourages players from actually taking the time to learn how to play the more difficult parts of each song. When star power is activated you really only need to successfully play about 1/5 of the notes correctly to progress, and that makes it easy to essentially skip the most difficult portions of each song.
With all that said, the game is still really fun and well worth buying. I've been playing Guitar for roughly 12-13 years and a lot of tunes that I was able to play on real guitar beguiled me in both Guitar hero 1 and 2, which I found to be a fascinating challenge.
The addition of practice modes and co-op play are also a ton of fun. The game allows for different difficulty settings for each player in co-op so my friend was able to jump right in and play despite his lack of experience.
As long as the developers aren't cheap and include a roster of more recognizable songs I'll be back for the third installment.
