Amazing! Not to be missed

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 0 / 0

Let me start out by telling you the four things that are NOT perfect about Mass Effect: 1) There is a lot of texture popup 2) The framerate dips quite a bit at times 3) The Mako vehicle is no fun to drive and 4) The uncharted worlds are very repetitive.

With that out of the way, I can safely say that everything else about this game is PERFECT! If you like popular sci-fi like Star Trek (especially Deep Space 9), Star Wars and Battlestar Galactica, this is the game for you.

The story is captivating, the "digital actors" give very convincing performances and the gameplay is full of choices and all out fun. In fact, I'm done with this review...I'm going back to play through it again. Don't miss this gem of game for any reason. If you don't have an Xbox 360 yet, THIS is the reason to go out and buy one.

The first true Next Gen RPG

What is Mass effect?
Mass effect is a superb Role Playing game for the Xbox 360. Mass Effect was created by BioWare, the makers of last gen's Kotor and Jade empire. And if you've ever played either of those games, you'll know the quality of RPG's that Bioware can craft. And this one is no different.

After finding a "Mass Relay" on mars, humans were catapulted onto the galactic scene. There are several different alien races for you're character, a commander Shephard, to interact with, and they are all unique and beautifully rendered. The games graphics are gorgeous, and while there are some graphical glitches here and there (textures taking a while to load and such), it doesn't detract from the overall experience of the game.

The game is fueled by the Role playing aspect. During conversations there is the "conversation wheel" in which you select your response or what you want to say. And yes, these decisions do affect what will happen. And that's one of the best features of Mass effect, what you do will cause outcomes that will change and affect you AND your squad. Forever.

Combat. Combat has been a main complaint of several reviewers. But the combat is fine for an action RPG. While you may think you're shooting someone right in the head, all damage and hit locations are done by "dice" rolls so it might be a bit weird at first. But you'll get used to it.

Now on to the weaker parts of Mass Effect. While the main quests are thought out and action packed, the side quests are bland and boring. Every single one is nearly identical. You're dropped on a remote planet. You drive around for a while. You find a room with bad guys in it (there are 3 different types of rooms!). Kill bad guys. Leave planet. Although there is one level that is different. It's so horrible I don't even want to speak about it. The landscape is so rocky that it'll take you twenty minutes to where your trying to go. You'll see it when you get to it.

And that leads us to the worst part of the game. You spend most of the side quest driving, but driving the Mako (your All terrain vehicle of terror) is absolutely awful. The controls are clunky and weird. Part Halo driving controls, but also part horrible controls. Vehicle combat is incredible difficult. You'll learn to fear vital parts of the game when you're forced to take the hideous beast.

Other than the horrible driving and bland side quests, Mass Effect is a truly good game. The first RPG to really take advantage of the next generation consoles power, Mass effect is a beautiful and epic piece of narration, where your choices make you.

Overall Score: 9/10

This is a game with a good story line! It's not too long, not too short. The graphics could be better and the lag is annoying, but it's very good overall.

Very close to the star wars' "Knights of the Old Republic", but better in may ways. It's graphics are intense, and having several story lines running at the same time is cool. It took me over 35 hours total time to complete it. Definitely worth the money!!

A Must-Have for RPG Addicts and Xbox 360 in General

Mass Effect is a must add to anyone's Xbox 360 gaming collection. It is another solid outing from the company, Bioware, that brought Knights of the Old Republic (KotOR) and Jade Empire to the last generation of Microsoft console.

Story Line (5/5)

The storyline is top-notch, very deep and engrossing overall. Without giving too much away, you play as Commander Shephard (Male or Female) as a representative of humanity, a newcomer to the politics of space, in a race to save the galaxy from an ancient foe.

Sound (5/5)

Voice acting is the best that I have ever seen in any game. There are variations in dialog based on gender, background, and your paragon/renegade standing. Unlike past games, non-playable characters (NPCs) will actually refer to you as Cmd. Shephard (unlike previous games without a standard name). Ambient sounds and music reflect the feeling of the game at that moment in time.

Video/Graphics (5/5)

The graphics on this game are well done. Some of the views, especially in the Citadel are breath-taking for a game. Cutscenes are extremely well-done in this regard. It almost feels like you are watching a movie at times. The new unintrusive dialog system fits this role beautifully as you don't have to sit and read massive sections of text, you are able to respond instictively.

Replayability (5/5)

There is a great deal of difference in which the different classes play, so that combat won't be the same when you play through again as a different class. Gender and background choices change how people react to you. Your moral path of Paragon/Renegade changes the way in which you complete quests.

Overall, I would recommend this game to anyone who owns or is currently considering buying an Xbox 360. A fantastic game and I am already looking forward to the other two upcoming games in the trilogy.

This game grew on me. It took me a while to get used to it and for me to finally decide that I did in fact enjoy the game. The decisions that you make during this game will affect the outcome of many of the situations the characters get in. Play it through at least twice.

Best Hard Sci-Fi game

This is the best hard sci-fi game Ive ever played. It combines elements of a shooter and an RPG flawlessly. but, its crowning achievement is its story. The story is one of the best Ive seen (or read). Also, the information in the codex for you to explore is well researched and presented.

Total Awesomeness...with a few bugs

I bought this game for my husband, and the title of this review was his quote. He plays the game every night, I have to drag him away from it just to go to bed. Although it is a bit buggy, overall the game is totally worth every penny. The game is tons of fun, very customizable, and worth playing a few times, just to see how the story goes with different decisions. DEFINTIELY buy this if you loved Knights of the Old Republic.

Best Game Ever

For people that love Knights of the old Republic this is the game for you. The last three hours and deciding the fate of one of your allies is the best part of the game. If you have an addictive personality like playing evercrack you might want to skip this game because you will lose about twenty hours of your life playing this game.
