Mass Effect should not be compared shooters, it's roots are in the action strategy role playing (RPG) genre. That being said it is a great hybrid of the shooter / RPG formats. First you choose you character's gender, appearance and general history. Then you are introduced to team of optional characters all the while holding conversations that develop your characters being and introduce side missions (hence the RPG format).
However Mass Effect, like a good shooter, provides lots of customizable guns and awesome fire-team support from your co-stars (who of course will need to develop in the skill sets you want them to excell in). You get to deploy a three-person team on missions to shoot & loot mercenary bases, rescue hostages while boarding other starships, and persue goals in the efforts of accomplishing your main task of saving the universe. Visit several large developed planets and explore many "uncharted" worlds using a fully armed and armoured scout vehicle (which is almost as good as a Warthog, almost).
I am completely addicted to this game and I have already played through about eight times trying to root out all the minor plotline missions, several of which are only available if you play "bad cop" or "good cop" in your actions. There are also a ton of reward point badges to unlock for your overall gamer score. I absolutely love this game! One major complaint: the same level layouts were used way to often in missions even if the interior decorating was different on planet bases.
Please note there are possible semi-graphic sex scenes if you fully persue the love intersts, including partial nudity with two possible girl-on-guy (male character) & two different girl-on-"hot alien"girl scenes (if playing a female character). Please note that you choose to complete the sex scenes, they are not forced upon you and they are not a suprise. They only occur if the player chooses for them to occur. This is a MATURE rated game, so just be warned if you are stupid and are going to let younger gamers play. This is an awesome game for mature gamers!

This is one of the greatest games I've ever played. Anyone who has a 360 and likes an involving game will love ME. There are some minor quirks with regard to the load times and the texture loading. Do not let that delay you in purchasing/playing the game!!! The story develops at a nice pace, and really involves the player. You really feel part of the story. The action and character development are pretty good. Just a GREAT game all around. And the replay value is HUGE. This game is totally worth the money!
Don't listen to Cooper Lawrence, she hasn't even played the game!!!
Ground breaking and truly breathtaking

Mass Effect is an amazing RPG. The graphics and story really make the experience believable. The characters, the plot line twists, deceptions and betrayals are unrivaled and make Mass Effect one of the all time great experiences.
Excellent Game

I don't normally write reviews, but I had to for this game. It is one of the best stories I have played in a while. I am not a RPG player but the mix of Halo and KTOR style keeps everyone involved. I really loved the game and couldn't put it down once I started.
Almost Perfect

Mass Effect may be, at the time of writing this review, the pinnacle of story telling in the interactive multimedia medium. Of course, personal tastes will wildly affect your own opinion on this, however for someone interested in RPGs and Sci-Fi, I can think of no better game to date.
Mass Effect is visually grand. It showcases the XBox 360's processing power and is demonstrating how close to movie-quality games have come. The voice acting is top notch and the game controls are quite tight. Attention to detail, however, it likely the most outstanding feature of the game. The universe feels real, the sci-fi feels natural and believable, and the storyline doesn't feel forced.
The game is not without its shortcomings, though. The inventory system is a pain to manage and really could have used some way to sort the various items you automatically acquire. The texture pops are the only mar on an otherwise graphically perfect game, though this is not the fault of Bioware, but of Microsoft insisting that games not utilize the harddrive, and thus the caching of data makes things difficult. Long elevator rides are another effect of this. Your teammates can be a bit clueless at times, sometimes wandering between you and an enemy, or attacking fruitlessly some object between themselves and an enemy. And the bright idea of making B exit the Galaxy Map is, perhaps, the most aggravating thing in the game.
The game has a steep learning curve and little documentation to help, however a quick look online will answer just about any question you have.
With that said, the flaws of this game are rather insignificant. They take away little from the experience, and don't hold a candle to the many positive things the game has to offer. This is certainly one of the top games of 2007, and I am anxiously awaiting the planned sequel.
FUNNEST ACTION RPG EVER!!

I would definitely reccomend mass effect to anybody who likes rpg's in general, or if you are a fan of halo and do not like rpg's all that much this may also be the game for you. The cinematics make this a great game, usually they get boring, but this feels like your in the middle of a great movie. Mass Effect is going to be a trilogy, and I am more than ready for the next one. This is one of the best reasons to own an xbox besides LIVE!!
Is this the best game of the year?

Is Mass Effect the best game of 2007?
Mass Effect has been in development for several years, and now that it is finally out, we can see that it was worth it.
GOOD STUFF:
The gameplay, graphics, story, characters, and voice acting is superb. (Voices from actors like Seth Green. Also the voice actors for Carth Onasi and Bastila from Knights of the Old Republic.)
The dialogs are amazingly well done, with so many different options, that you're left stunned with the effects of your decisions.
Lots of different weapons and armour for you to equip, upgrade, and use to your disposal. You also get a lot of magical abilities like being able to hold a guy up in the air while you pump his body full of shotgun shells.
Let's not forget the character creation, it's incredible. With so many options, you can make almost anything. (The scars look grizzly, sick and awesome.)
There's lots to do, first time i played through it, i spent a dozen hours and didn't even scratch the surface of things to accomplish.
You'll find yourself playing through this game several times just to see what kind of stories unfold.
BAD STUFF:
The graphics load in slowly, environments, characters, everything, can take awhile to be shown.
The Squad Commands are pretty pathetic, you can tell them where to run to, but they mostly just run into walls and you give up on the whole thing early on in the game.
Lack of direction? This game can get very overwhelming fast, especially when you start to explore the galaxy. Hard to find out what to do, and so you basically just run around wondering what the hell's going on.
The planets you land on are pretty much all the same, just with different textures.
OVERALL STUFF
Mass Effect is an awesome game, but has it's flaws.
Is Mass Effect the best game of 2007?
Close, top 5 for sure, but no, it's not the best game of 2007.
Definately worth buying though. Any RPG fan MUST have this for their own.
Wonderful

This is one of the best gaming experiences I've ever had. I've been playing video games since the days of Pong, and as an avid gamer still, I have never come across something like Mass Effect. There are so many moments of breathtaking art (yes, Roger Ebert, art) that it takes the idea of "gaming" to a kind of interactive movie experience.

Fun RPG. Not openended enough. I favor elder schrolls oblivian. It has good potential but not enough diversity for me. Definatly seems to be an (Idea game). I would give it an 8 on a scale 1-10. Game makers: Need nitrous boost on maco, Mini game are fine but can take away from the real game when you do them over and over and over. Needs blood. Need to pilot normandy atleast once. And need to access journal in galexy map. Need a run button when not in combat. Be nice if game realized you played it before and this is a replay.

This game is amazing. It's very much like Oblivion, but instead of swords and knives, there are guns. The only saddening thing about this game is that there is no free roam after you finish the main quest. Other than that there is nothing wrong with the game, you just have to get all the side missions done before you finish the main quest.
