Just finished my 2nd playthrough of this game and I'm already considering a 3rd. If you liked Knights of the Old Republic, or similar RPG's, definitely get this game.

Sure, the dialog is a bit weak, but the game is very engaging for all ages. I would not necessary recommend it to youngsters, but it gives us older players something to enjoy.

Mass Effect is one of the best games that has ever been my pleasure to own. I had followed this game since it's first trailer had come and and swallowed up all the information I could find about it and I am glad to say that it turned out to be even better than my original expectations. The storyline is extremely epic and clever, and provides different outcomes from different attitudes, giving the game replayability. Also, the game's Ratchet and Clank style of after a full play through let's you play the game again and retain all of your' weapons and powers. The third person combat allows for excellent battles, one could say that it is better than traditional third person shooters like Ghost Recon. What really struck me was the immersive nature of the game. When you talk with NPCs, you feel like you are talking to a real person. Your statements, while any attitude you give will basically have a similar outcome, will affect how you play the game. This truly is the unstoppable Next-Gen RPG that we have all been waiting for. BTW, all that stuff about the game having a full-on sex scene is complete bull.
Great game with just a few flaws

I recommend reading the book beforehand to really flesh out the story. Rarely do videogames have such a well thought out story and well fleshed out universe. I'm not a huge sci fi fan but this is a fun one. There are some gameplay/interface issues but nothing that prevented me from getting immersed into the experience and having a fun time. I plan to play it through again soon.

when the Legend of Zelda Orania of time was realsed for the n64 it was called the greatest game ever. And since that time no game has close, but as story overall play and imeerse quality this is the greatest game since that time. I don't understand the M however in my opoin it's subtile for teenagers. But darn this guy rocks. I haven't stayed up that late playing a video game since well Orancia of time. No xbox360 owners, sci-fi fan, video game fan should be without this . if you don't have by it now
What else can I say?...

After a long search for a decent RPG for xbox 360 I've finally play this gem that is a truly user interaction next generation release. The story, the graphics, the sound all is well designed and fits perfect in this game. My only complaint is the subtitles font size, is small and mixes with the background, hope there is a patch for this soon.

To start off this review, I'd like to mention my love of the original Knights Of The Old Republic game on the XBox. I've played through at least 4 times. The second game was good too, but the story was lacking a bit in my opinion... Plus the boss battles at the end of the game were BAD.
Scroll forward a few years and we have Mass Effect on the XBox 360. Now instead of chosing a dialogue line that you wouldn't hear your character say, you get a dialogue tree as I like to call it. You use the left analogue stick to choose the line you wish your character to express. This was at first touted as being a fantastic new advancement, and in ways it is. The circle of dialogue shows a shortened version of what your character should say, and depending on whether you decide to level up your character's "Charm" and "Intimidate" skills, you can unlock more options.
My first run through, I created my character and was pretty disappointed in how slim the options were in many cases. The choice of hairstyles is piss poor and you are expected to choose styles ranging from "bald" to "not-bald-but-pretty-damn-short".
My character was known in his past as being merciless and doing whatever it takes to get a job done, including many, many lives, and this was noted by alot of NPC characters I met along my travels across galaxies.
You set out on a pretty boring tutorial mission on a sparse planet... It will be important in the long run, but once you get to the citedel Space Station, you will really start to get a feel for the game, and realise that the dialogue parts can be among the most fun you've had in a game. Nothing beats intimidating people to pay you extra for an illegal job that you just carried out.
Anyone that played KOTOR will no-doubt remember the amount of bugs that were in the game. Here you can certainly tell that this game was made by the same Developer. There are many texture pop-in problems and this can become quite annoying throughout the more you notice it. I also noticed slowdown during a boss battle and also during a large-scale on, where the frame rate dropped to under 10 fps, which is pretty abysmal in my book.
Other than these glitches, the game looks beautiful. The variety in species is stunning, and players that want to go into detail on them can do just that by listening to the Codex entries that you unlock as you go.
Side missions usually have the same formula on different planets, get to point "x" and kill everyone. Make it into base. Kill everyone. Find out reason for being there. Leave. Next planet of your choice.
I did a decent few side quests, and still beat the game in just over twenty hours. This disappoints me, as maybe it's just me being old fashioned, but I expect an RPG to be over 30 hours. The first time I beat KOTOR, it took over 40 hours.
Overall, the game has quite a few bugs, just like KOTOR, but also like KOTOR it is a magnificent game, and I can't wait for the sequel.
9/10.

If you agree with the saying "Getting there is half the fun" this is the game for you. I suggest investing in a guide or at least finding an FAQ somewhere for the planets, unless you enjoy running all over looking for things which is fun too. Whatever your exploration style, this game can help you do it. From the huge galaxy you can explore once the prologue is done to the individual planets you can land on and even the huge space station introduced in the prologue you will not want for adventure. I'm about 13 hours into the game just doing optional missions. I've only completed a quarter of the main storyline, and there are many more things I've yet to do! Driving the tank-like Mako on any number of very detailed planets, none of which are the same and many that have their own weather patterns, is a blast (literally if you run into trouble, it's got a great cannon). I'm looking forward to the next one and I'm still working on this one! Viva la trilogy!

Some small graphical glitches aside, this game is awesome. The variety of things you can do, the characters, the story, the engine, even the menues - everything is done extremely well. I found myself playing through twice in a row, just to try what outcome different actions would bring. And some of them are quite different. The moral choices you have to make (which buddy do I send to his death?) were actually hard to make at times. The mix of shooter/story/RPG works well, and the occasional humor actually came across as funny, in no small part because of the great facial expressions. This one was well worth the price for me and I definitely recommend it.

I bought this game for my husband's XBox 360. He plays every spare moment he has. He was a big fan of the Halo series but says this is even better than those!
