The opening scence got the best animation award in SIGGRAPH 2000. And it servered it. The quality of the graphics is the best so far among all the PS2 games. The translation from the Japanese is bad but not affecting the fun of the game. The puzzles are not that hard, so it is better to solve them yourselves. This way, you will enjoy the game more. A MUST have PS2 title.

I just played this absolutely fantastic game. However I have yet to finish it, seeing that I can't seem to get past the semi-final boss battle. I found this game challenging and extremely fun, but also very, very short. If only it was longer. The opening scene was stunningly! It literally puts Resident Evil to shame and I am a major RE fan. Wow, I couldn't believe the character designs in this game. Samanosuke actually looks like Takeshi Kineshiro (the famous Japanese/Chinese actor -- i.e. ChungKing Express). You have to get this GAME!!!!
Not a bad game... what there is of it.

The first big survival horror game for the Playstation 2 is Onimusha Warlords. Set in ancient Japan you take the role of Samonosuke, as he quests to rescue a kidnapped princess. Instead of normal Resident Evil style of blowing away zombies with modern weapons, you are equipped only with melee weapons and a magic gauntlet.
The game is incredible to look at as the art for the game is incredibly detailed. The characters move gracefully through the areas fighting through hordes demons. The game is played from fixed perspectives that change as you near the edge of the screen. For the most part this style works well in the game, but there are a few occasions where an enemy will strike at you from off the screen giving you no warning at all.
The controls are handled quite well in Onimusha. For combat there are buttons to attack, block, for magic, and one to strafe around targets (similar to N64's Legend of Zelda). When fighting creatures one on one, or even groups of lesser creatures the game is a blast ot play, hacking through hordes of demons. However, when you get accosted by multiple enemies whose attacks have to be dodged to avoid damage, the game can turn frustrating fairly quickly. Outside of combat you use a gauntlet to absorb the souls of vanquished foes to recharge health and magic and to enhance weapons and keys. In addition, there are very minor puzzles that need to be solved throughout the game as well. The game stays fairly linear (find this key, open this door, etc) and you're never too lost in the game, but I think that's mainly a result of the small size of the game itself, more on this later.
The story is nothing spectacular. It's the tried and true rescue the princess from the big evil creature idea. It works, but lacks any major originality. Unfortunately the game seems to spend as much time setting up the story for this game as they do for the sequel. Without spoiling anything I'll just say there are major events that seem to have been put into the game that are never addressed. I didn't pay money for the game in order to find out what the next game was going to be about and was quite disappointed in this aspect.
In all the game took about 6 hours or so to go through the first time. It's another case of a PS2 game that can be rented and beaten before it needs to be returned. The game offers a few extras, the most noticable being a small mini-game that can be activated if you can find 20 special stones (fluorite) throughout the game. Otherwise the only reason to play the game again is because of the new costumes that the characters can wear, which is hardly worthwhile.
In conclusion the game is fun. I did enjoy the hours that I put into the game, but it left me wanting so much more. This game adds to the list of games that I highly recommend you rent before you buy. You will probably be able to beat the game and save yourself a bunch of money for future games.
Great Graphics, but it's too easy

Nice game, great graphics, but I finished it in 4 hours. I expect a little more game time for $50. The bosses and nearly all of the enemies are easy to beat. Basically, your character has great blocking skills and can block practically anything that's thrown at him, so you just need to block and wait for the right time to attack. This approach works with all bosses except for the last one, but even he is pretty easy to beat. Then there's a bunch of "puzzles" to solve throughout the game, but they're the kind of puzzles that just get in the way of game play. In the end you start to get really annoyed and frustrated with them. You're going to enjoy this game more if you use a game-guide to solve the puzzles, just to get them out of the way and back to enjoying the game. There are going to be parts of the game where you have to make several attempts at the same thing/enemy/puzzle. What's really annoying is that in between that "thing" and your last save is a "mini-movie", so when you're defeated, you go back to your last save, and have to sit through the flippin mini-move again before you can get on with the task in hand. BAD. These are my reasons for the three stars.
A fantastic game, rent it over the weekend

This game was great fun, not very scary but very well done. It doesn't get 5 stars because it isn't very long. My roomate rented it, we both beat it before it had to go back. But still, it has great graphs and a good plot, as fun as the first resident evil, even if it isn't very long.
this game is good, but....

this game is ok... well, very good in concept and design.. but it has a major flaw.
background isn't 3D!! as a consumer, i don't care whether it was designed originally for PS1... if it was, then, they should release it as PS1 game and take some time to re-develop it.
and, since back ground isn't 3D, the control of charactor.. especially in fighting isn't so smooth..
I would give it 5 Stars, if it weren't for that 2D back ground... that's a shame...
Rocking Game!!!

In a word....ADDICTING. I popped this ... in and didn't put the controller down until some 10 hours later... to get food. I thought there was some pretty good replay value, especially if you've had the thrill of the Bishamon sword and wanted to play the entire game with it. If you've seen the movie Blade, and can remember the beginning when Blade is in the meat house, you'll remember the effect of his sword on the vampires. When he hit them they would ignite and flame out into ash in about a second. The Bishamon sword has that very effect, which is super cool when running through the Onimusha version of Gauntlet. (The dark rehlm for those who've played). Simply, this is an owner. I've put many hours into the game. Yeah, Ive mastered it (beating it under two hours, getting all 20 stones, 600 kills, 55000 souls, blablabla.) BUT I STILL PLAY THE GAME. Trust me gamers, this is a winner. Pick it up and you won't be let down.
Great game, some flaws

This is a great game, a great addition to the Capcom action/adventure games that are out there right now. The above information is wrong though, the backgrounds are pre-rendered, and have no polygons. They look awesome anyway. The characters are comprised of over 10,000 polygons, the highest count in character polygons in gaming...ever. This means highly detailed characters with great graphics. It's easy to control if you are used to Resident Evil, but otherwise its kinda hard to get used to. My only complaint is that the game is short, lasting about 6 hours... The game takes place in Feudal Japan, and is historically accurate and researched if that means anything to you.
Great game

I bought Onimusha when it first came out and let me say its one of my favorite ps2 games. It is relatively short but the story is quite good. The graphics kick butt and the game is quite gory. The opening movie is one of the best I've seen and for once it does not glorify Japan's samurai by showing everyone doing martial arts. It shows how desperate battles were in those days. Capcom did a great job on this game and I look forward to the sequel. If you've got the money and are looking for a good game consider this one.

I just beat Onimusha: Warlords... This game is literaly an epic story. It has sweet graphics. It has an excellent plot with lots of twists ala Resident Evil games. The thing I liked about it the best is the bosses! You never know what huge, awsome, spiky, muscular beast/tyrant you'll fight next! My favorite was this one monstrosity named Marcellus. He has 2 forms in the game are is fun to fight because of the moves you and him exchange with each other. It all plays out like a movie and even though it seems like you are against unbeatable odds, you keep on kicking! I won't give anything away but...THE ENDING WAS THE COOLEST AND MOST SATISFYING THAT I'VE SEEN FOR A GAME...PERIOD!! It's not one of those everybody walks into the sunset happilly ever yadda yadda. This game gives you what you want. And if your worried about it being too hard, IT AIN'T! I consider myself a mediocre video gamer and I did it. In about 8 1/2 hrs. Oh yeah, get a memory card if ya don't have one..and look out for Marcellus.
