I don't understand the appeal ...

First of all, let me preface this review by saying that I have never been a fan of the Mario Kart series. But back in early December (2005), I bought a Nintendo DS and didn't have any games to play on it. I had subscribed to Gamefly so I could start renting them, but wanted something to play until the games from my Gamefly subscription started rolling in. Even though I'd never been into Mario Kart, I kept seeing rave reviews for this game and people were going nuts over it, so I figured why not? Maybe this game was somehow better than the MK games that came before it. And even though Mario Kart DS apparently combines the best aspects of the versions that came before it, at the end of the day, it's still Mario Kart.
My biggest problem with this game is its sense of speed ... basically, there is none. If you're used to playing racers like F-Zero and Burnout, this thing moves at a snail's pace. I heard that it speeds up once you unlock more cars, but you have to plod through a bunch of races using the crappy cars in order to get to that point, and that's just too much work for me. My next gripe with this game are the weapons. I can deal with the banana and green shell, but some of the weapons (*cough* lightening *cough* blue shell *cough*) are just cheap ... these are the kinds of weapons that you have no chance of avoiding. You'll be in first place and get nailed by a weapon that you had *no chance* of dodging, and suddenly you findyourself in 4th or 5th. This makes the entire game tedious and annoying to play. Another gripe in this game is the audio. Nintendo seems to have a knack for including the *worst* music possible in a video game. I'll be glad when portable gaming progresses to the point where custom soundtracks become possible, because the music in games like this just makes me want to turn the volume all the way down.
So what about the WiFi feature? Well, I don't have a wireless router, so I went to my local McDonalds hotspot to check it out. The setup was extremely easy and I was playing online in less than 2 minutes after starting the game. However, playing against other humans seemed pretty much like playing against the computer, cept that the humans were a lot better. I think I came in last every time. The service itself is great ... it's just too bad they kicked it off with such a shoddy game.
In the end, I just don't understand the draw to this game. To me, it seems like a pretty lame racer with cheap weapons and cartoon characters. I'm still waiting for a DS port of F-Zero. F-Zero is not the be-all/end-all of racing games, but it would certainly be better than this.

If you've read any of my other reviews on DS games, you might have heard me say this before....One thing I'll have to hand to Nintendo, even though they might not have alot in quantity of games for the Nintendo DS, what games that are released for the system are of good quality. Not once have I bought a game that wasn't fun, addictive or deep in gameplay. Sadly, I hate to admit, I can't say that with the Playstation Portable. Sure, some games were flawed(course, all games have flaws of some sort). And, sure, the graphics aren't of PSP calibur but who really cares when the games are this good. Take Mario Kart DS, for instance...it took awhile to come out but it was well worth the wait. With over 30 courses drawn from every Mario Kart game -Super Mario Kart, Mario Kart 64, Mario Kart: Super Circuit, and Mario Kart: Double Dash, Mario Kart DS is a game that's not to be missed. The all-star cast includes characters you all know and love like..Mario, Luigi, Peach, Yoshi, Konkey Kong, Wario, Bowser, and Toad. The game also allows up to eight players to play with only one copy. The best thing about the game is the Wi-Fi gameplay. I'm surprised with its' more ambitious gameplay. I don't have any gripes with this game in any way.

I simply adored Mario Kart: Super Circuit for the Gameboy Advance. It was an absolute blast to play through. Mario Kart DS is no different. Keeping with the tried and true Mario Kart formula, Mario Kart DS will surely please Mario Kart and Racing fans alike.

Ahh....Another Nintendo system means there is going to be another Mario Kart. And don't worry, this one is much better than "Double Dash!".

The biggest thing about this game is that you have to adjust to using a D-pad instead of a joystick. The amazing thing is that it works flawlessly. You can steer and turbo boost without any trouble at all. Of course, because of the DS' size, your thumbs will hurt after awhile unless you are ten and under.

You have multiple options on what you can do; you can race in the GrandPrix or against a friend, you can battle your friend with items or steal a Shinesprite, or you can go into mission mode or bust out your USB stick and get online!

*The two biggest changes in modes would be online mode and mission mode. In mission mode you are given adjectives such as collecting coins or trying to kill Monty Moles with green shells.*

This one is made the old fashion way; in fact, it is basically all of the other Mario Karts packed into a tiny chip that you can travel with. Not only are there four new cups with four new tracks per cup, but there are four additional cups filled completely with tracks from "Super Mario Kart" up to "Mario Kart: Double Dash!". Although the memories are well appreciate, it can be a little sad they did not put in persay the Rainbow Road track from "Mario Kart 64".

There are only two new weapons in this game and it does NOT include any of the weapons found in "Double Dash!". The two new additions are the blooper and the bullet bill. The blooper will squirt ink onto everyone that is in front of you and the bullet bill will tranform you into......a bullet bill and rocket you up the rankings (Only for a short time). And of course the old favorites like the stars and lightning bolts are there too.

The sound and music is alright. Nothing is really that noticable nor worth listening to, but it is not terrible either. As I reference in each of my reviews, this game is perfectly fit for anyone with a hearing-impairment. The volume is clear and not choatic so you can hear everything fine.

Graphics are just slightly above those of the N64 and that is saying a lot. The display really doesn't affect how much fun you are having, so it is neutral. It all fits perfectly in the screen. The top screen is where your character is shown driving (Flawless, the screen is not at all crowded with data) and the bottom "Touch" (Not in this game)screen is your track map; and the track map is so detailed you can literally just look at that one screen to drive.

***So far this has been the best DS game I have played. There enough for you to do to keep you occupied for several weeks. I give it my highest recommendation.

P.S. For online mode, you ever have to go to a "hotspot" (Place that uses a WiFi internet connections, go to www.nintendo.com for more info) or you have to purchase a Nintendo DS USB stick.

If you go to a hotspot, you have to admit you would look pretty darn geeky sitting there in public with your DS.

If you buy a USB stick, you must have a computer (With a USB drive of course) connected to the internet and you'll have everything. The special thing with Nintendo is that once you've paid for the USB stick, you will NOT have to pay any monthly fees for the online capabilities. :-)A USB stick will run you about 30-some dollars.

I've been playing this on the DS Lite and it is great. The sound effects and music are amazing, but aside from the hectic action and gameplay, my favorite feature is watching the replay of whatever course you just completed. The camera angles are MIND BLOWING! The detail just keeps you in thrall; I can't believe how engrossing a small screen like this is. The colors and characters are incredible! I also love the "missions", where you are challenged to some really interesting tasks, they're a lot of fun. The DS (Lite) is worth buying for this game alone, it's that good.

This game is another must-own if you have a DS. It has a total of eight cups with four races each (16 all new, 16 retro). Go through different difficulties to unlock new racers and Karts (and mirror mode where you do the game backwards). Also the first with WIFI gaming, playing online is awesome! In short, BUY THIS GAME.

I really enjoy Mario Kart! I never have been in to Mario until I picked up this game. You can play it over and over again without being bored. The only thing about it is that at times it can be hard for kids to get a very good score on the upper levels. However, with a little practice, it's a lot of fun!

Mario Kart DS is one of the few good ds games that are out there. it just rocks. Also here are some tips. If you're doing multiplayer with someone, when you start, keep pressing the A button but don't press it until you get to 2 cause it goes 1, 2, 3, go and you will get a short but sweet speed boost. Also if you get squirted by those octopus things, look at the bottom screen to help you focus because it's sorta like a map and you can actually see where you're going then turn back to the top screen when the goop comes off since sometimes it's no use looking at the bottom screen all the time because you see more action if you look at the top screen. I hope you enjoy this game.
