Anyone who owned and loved either an SNES and N64 is almost undoubtedly sure to love the Mario Kart series. When it debuted on SNES about a decade ago, we were all instantly in love with it. When the N64 sequel rolled out a few years later, those who hadn't already jumped on the bandwagon were pretty much guaranteed to do so. In fact, that game is probably the best game in the series. Years went by and Nintendo fans saw the release of a GameCube version called "DoubleDash" and a GBA version that payed homage to the original. Though both games were fun in their own right ("Baby Park" anyone?.....anyone?), they just didn't really reinvent the wheel or bring anything exciting to the Mario Kart table. Mario Kart DS is a game that can possibly reverse this trend.
Being exclusively designed for a handheld system, Mario Kart DS really has its work cut out for it. Seeing as how the other MK games relied heavily on its multiplayer environment, how could a handheld recreate this mayhem? Well, fortunately, the development team over at Nintendo has put a lot of work into this game.
First, there's single player mode, where you can choose from Grand Prix, Time Trials, Versus Match, and Battle Mode. That's right! Mario Kart DS supports bot-matches. So if you want to just race one opponent, you can! If you want to enter a battle arena and bust some balloons, you can do that too! This incredibly helpful when it comes to recreating the multiplayer environment. Additionally, the Grand Prix mode has a plethora of unlockable Karts, Characters, and other assorted goodies. Surely, if you want to just play all by your lonesome, there are a lot of options to keep you going for the long haul.
When it comes to multiplayer, Mario Kart DS isn't really lacking either. All of these game modes are available to play with multiple DS's and you can even play using just one DS cartridge and multiple systems! The real enjoyable feature on the game is really the Wi-Fi Connect Mode which allows players to connect with up to 3 other people and play "best-out-of-4" matches based on certain criteria that you decide. It really adds to the longevity of the game and will continually have you coming back for more.
The development team has decided to keep the classic control scheme for this version of Mario Kart, only utilizing the touch screen for menu-navigation. However, they did utilize both screens on the system, using the top for classic display and the lower screen as a map which displays your position in the race as well as any items that may be headed towards you. This adds so much strategy to the game that it's insane and hard to imagine going back to a single-screen setup ever again.
Additionally, the game features 32 different maps, 16 of which are classic maps from every previous game in the Mario Kart lineup! I can't begin to explain how much fun it is to go ack and play Choco Mountain or Moo Moo Farm from the N64 version, or even Mushroom Bridge from DoubleDash (No DK Jungle though...drats!). That being said, the new maps aren't lacking much. They are very well designed and feature several little shortcuts to help you out if you get a little behind.
Overall, this is a great game! It has the creativity that one has come to expect from Nintendo with the pleasant surprise of lasting appeal, something that is often missing on handhelds. This game is a blast!
Recommended for Mario Kart fans and anyone looking to justify their purchase of a Nintendo DS.

First of all, this game is amazing, once you start playing you will be impressed and won't let go till the DS is out of battery. I really like Mario Kart games, but I didn't like MKDD that much and I was a little worried about this one, but it turned out to be great. It's almost the same as MK64 and a little better... If you like MK64, you won't regret this one at all.
The best Mario kart Game

As of this writing, I have only written reviews for wrestling Pay-Per-Views. But now, I will cross over to the world of video game reviews! But wrestling fans need not worry, because I will still grace you with my opinions on PPV's. Now, on to Mario Kart.
I have played every Mario Kart game that has ever been released, and this game is definitely the best of the series.(The worst is Double Dash, and that is still a great game)If you own a DS, this is an absolute must have.
GRAPHICS
The graphics for this game are top-notch for the Nintendo DS. All of the characters look great in this game and the courses, both new and old, look great as well.
SOUND
If you have played any Mario game before, then you know what to expect. Most, if not all, of the music is cheerful and fast-paced. The character noises are on the money too.
GAMEPLAY
You are going to have lots of fun with this game. Even if you are playing alone, there are many options for you. First, there is the Grand Prix, which is in every Mario Kart game. But there is a change. There are now 2 Grand Prixs. The first one is the Nitro Grand Prix. This one has four cups, and it features all new courses. Most of these courses are a blast to race on. The second Grand Prix is Retro Grand Prix. This one also has four cups.In each of these cups, there is one course from each of the previous Mario Karts.(SNES,N64,GBA,GCN)Most of these courses are good, but there are some that should have been there instead of some that were in.
Another one player feature is the missions mode. This has you completing 9 missions in 6 worlds. Once you complete the missions, you face the boss of the world. The missions have you doing certain things such as collecting coins, to powersliding a certain amount of times, to driving through tires.
MULTIPLAYER
This is where the game really shines. You can play with up to eight friends even with only one cartridge! You can race,or battle. The battle games are shine runners, which has you trying to collect as many shines as you can, and balloon battle. Balloon Battle utilizes the DS microphone, because you have to blow into it to blow up your balloons. It's pretty fun. Unfortunately, I don't have Wi-Fi, so I can't tell you about that.
FINAL COMMENTS
All in all, this game should be played by anyone and everyone with an interest in video games. You will have fun with this one for a long time.

Mario games, over the years have been some of the most succesful of all of the systems, and this one is no different.
Gameplay: Excelent gameplay. New items, new characters, and four modes is non-stop fun. I have logged atleast 50 hours into this game, and still play more. Even after beating all of the courses once, you have the challenge of beating them all with one star. Don't forget battle mode aswell! 5/5 for Gameplay.
Sound/Graphics: Now, we know that nintendo isn't the greatest at graphics, but, these I think are good. They have put gameplay first, which I think is fine. There is one glitch I found with the graphics, that sometimes people dissapear. But it's kind of funny. The sound was great. nice and clear. You can't mistake a noise for something else. Well-done! 4/5 for graphics/sound
Characters/Levels: hmm, I think that nintendo should have added about 4 more characters to the game. I also think, that they should have brought back more levels from double dash. Other than that, it's amazing! Just when you think you know each level, something new happens and you discover an amaziong shortcut! 4/5 for Characters/levels
PROS
*Wi-Fi makes this game even MORE fun
*tons of levels and characters make this game last a long time
* High replay value
CONS
* Online gets boring if everyone leaves during the game.
Great Game. Lots of fun

For those still on the fence about this game- don't be! It got me, a super busy college student, back into video games, for which I am profoundly grateful. Now, I just with I had more disposable income to spend on games!
This game kept me engaged for weeks, and I still come back to it the most just to relive the tracks I raced on when I was a kid. I highly recommend this game! The online play is a nice touch, and works very well, for what it's meant to do.
Great fun in a simple game.

I like very much most of the races, plus you can go to multiplayer and play with other kids that have Nintendos but don't have the game. One can unlock different levels. and one can play it over and over again. I recommend this game very much.
