Medieval 2: Total Failure

1 Rating: 1, Useful: 9 / 11

After playing this game for several weeks now, it has become obvious that "crunch time" (the period of time that game developers are supposed to irons out kinks) was poorly executed. The game is adulterated by numerous bugs. For example, there is a widely known bug (aka 2-handed bug), which effects some units that implement 2-handed weapons. During battle in campaign mode, sometimes these units (for example, french dismounted noble knights) do not attack as they should, but instead many get stuck in parrying animation while they get pummeled to death by opposing units.
Also, there is poor unit cohesion. For example when you order dismounted knights to attack, only few knights will engage while the majority will sit back and do absolutely nothing. Units at times will not follow orders properly, especially when chasing down routing armies (cavalry are especially difficult to control when in pursuit).
The AI is quirky and noticably unintelligent. Small armies will sometimes seige a city defended by an army twice or triple their size. I've fought AI armies consisting entirely of seige weapons. The AI is passive and will just stand their while you fire multiple volleys of arrows into their ranks. Alliances and your reputation are now irrelevant, as you will always be backstabbed by one of your allies.
Units sometimes disband prematurely while on crusade. It is very difficult to traverse the map while on crusade.
I can go on, as the list is huge.

The 1.1 patch released on the 15th of December does not correct the most important issues.

You can visit multiple forums to confirm the contents of this review.

I suggest that gamers wait until patch number two is released (which had been delayed yet again), before you buy this product.

Terrible AI

The micromanagement of the territories is a mixed bag compared to MTW1 as you'll find yourself spending hours just to properly maintain 5-6 territories. If you like depth - it's there.

My complaint is the AI in battle. Approaching enemies march right up to your archers and stand there allowing your archers to pummel them until they break ranks. Sometimes they don't move for the duration of the battle. Other times the opposition will appear in random spots, sometimes spawning right behind your lines. Have no fear, though - they'll just stand there and let your undefended archers attack.

Control of your army is a MAJOR step down from MTW1. When placing your units, the lines showing where they'll be set are dim and don't act intuitively AT ALL. Say I want 8 units of spearmen in long rows 3 deep in front of archers. Forget it. It'll think you want a big square of men in one unit, then a long line 1 deep in the next, then another unit in another large square far behind the original line. Sometimes the units will be on top of each other. I can't imagine why they got away from the placement system of MTW1, which worked perfectly.

It really makes no difference. The battles are so poor that your best bet is using the auto-battle function. Your archers will continue raining arrows into your own ranks as they engage the enemy - and you can't stop them. Try to move them but sometimes you can't. Sometimes your units don't respond to any commands.

Once I was attacked while seiging a castle. No one ever attacked. I had to go after them myself. I'd just bring archers in front of them and kill all of his men. I'd then find another group of enemies and do the same. There's no sense of strategy at all.

If MTW1 was a 10 (which it was), MTW2 is a 4. It takes so long to play besides, you'll probably play half a campaign and go back to MTW1.

Very poorly made game.

Customer/Tech Support DOES NOT Exist

I wish I could write a review of the game. However, I have not been able to get it to work. Whenever I try to start the game, it reverts back to the windows desktop. I have uninstalled/reinstalled it. I have updated everything that can be updated. I have sent NUMEROUS emails (you can't actually talk to a person). I did recieve one response; telling me i used the wrong email address (the one given as the tech support address). No response from the new address. It sounds like a good game, as long as there are no tech issues.

Cannot get the game to work!

They should remove customer support from their website. I installed the game on two different computers that both run Rome: Total War and Barbarian invasion without a problem (and any game out there) and I cannot get it to work.

I suspect the CD-Key they put in my package is the wrong one. I have tried everything I can think of and it still gives me an error prompt to install the correct CD to play the game. I have tried it with both CD's for the game.

This is very frustrating to say the least. Sega has the WORST troubleshooting FAQ's and online support of any company I have dealt with. I have tried contacting them multiple times by phone and email without success.

I enjoyed the series until this experience.

No CD Key Included

This looks like a very enjoyable game, but I wouldn't know.

After recieivng this for Christmas I tried to install but there was no installation key in the package. Assuming there was a packaging problem as the card titled "Important Information" and "CD Key:" is blank where a key might be printed. If the key is normally somewhere else, well it's not there either.

I contacted SEGA by email but they are away until 3 Jan 07. I'll update this rating once I have resolved the CD Key issue and played the game.

Great ideas ruined by terrible glitches

This game could have been great. Even after the first patch though it remains too glitchy to enjoy. Go to the forums and see the list of glitches which still need to be fixed.
Forget about playing multiplayer with a friend too. The server is pitiful. You will not be able to join half the games that are up, so if you have a friend or relative who lives far away, and you want to play against them, you may be out of luck.

NO CD KEY!!!

Got the game for Christmas. Inside was a card that said, "Important User Information CD Key:" with nothing else on it. Tried contacting SEGA with no success. The game is useless.

big disappointment!

I am very disappointed with this game! I loved the first one and still play it. I just got this game and i played it for about an hour before becoming completely frustrated. I have a brand new pc with as much memory as you can get and this game runs slow as mud. It is really not like the first 1 at all. It seems like they took all the fun out of it just to improve the graphics a little. The gameplay is ridiculously complicated, and I am no novice gamer(I have played for over 20 years).I will probably never play this again, so I guess I wasted $40 bucks hoping it would be similar to Medieval Total War 1.

DVD rom disc 2 install trouble

I am giving this game one star in the hopes that I will eventually get to play it. I have a cutting edge PC, but DVD disc 2 of Medieval 2 will not install. Upon putting disc 2 into the dvd drive, I get a message that a certain file cannot be found. The only way out of this installation cul-de-sac is to cancel the installation. Great job, Sega!!! I should take the time to mention that no other games that I've purchased have had ANY installation problems. I've looked online, and have seen that others have had this same problem, yet nobody seems to have any idea how to get around it. Of course, on the games' official homepage, there is no mention of any installation problem. Anybody out there know how to solve this bug?

Errors, errors and more errors

I have had errors on installing, errors on playing the campian maps and errors in battle maps. I have installed the "patches" and have the expansion pack as well...this game could have been great. I have spent a total of 20 hrs tying to fix it and it is is buggy and unplayable for any length of time. After installing new chip set drivers, new grafix card drivers and new sound card drivers, I am still 50 dollars poorer and pissed off. Do yourself a favor and dont bother buying this game. I have a top of the line gaming cpu btw...I wish I could rate it lower than one star...
