Good idea, bad execution

3 Rating: 3, Useful: 13 / 14

Stuntman gets points for being an original idea, but unfortunately the game itself doesn't live up to the possibilities.

In the game, you play the role of a stuntman who works on several different films and also performs in stadium stunt shows. The stunts themselves involve piloting a variety of vehicles (including cars and snowmobiles) through stunt courses. A director's voice guides you through the stunt course, telling you what jumps to make, items to crash through, etc. After you have completed all of the stunts for a movie, you are treated to a trailor of the movie that included footage from your stunts.

Sounds pretty good, but the annoyances begin shortly after you pop in the disc. First, you must complete a stunt almost exactly as the director says, usually within a limited amount of time. Unfortunately, prior to beginning a stunt you are given no walkthrough of the stunt, so you are left to figure out the details through trial and error. Continously repeating a stunt gets old very quickly.

Next, you must complete a stunt before moving on to the next one. There is no way to jump between films or bypass a difficult stunt for a while. This alone removes much of the fun from the game. If you find yourself stuck on a stunt, there is nothing you can do about it and the game just isn't fun anymore.

If you're still interested I would recommend at least renting this one first.

Incredibly difficult!

In Stuntman, you take on the role of a Hollywood stunt driver, performing precise maneuvers and complex stunts for a series of movies, ranging from cheap B-movies all the way up to blockbuster action flicks. It's a brilliant idea, really.

Overall, this is a great game. The controls, though sensitive, are easy to get the hang of. The graphics, though not the best out there, more than do the job--the lighting is especially nice. Collisions look very convincing; bits of metal fly off vehicles, front ends get smashed in, doors get torn off. The levels are exciting and there is a constant pressure to perform and a need to constantly keep your eyes open.

Having said all that, I should point out that I returned this game the same day I bought it. It is just way too difficult. Each level is between about 30 seconds and one minute, and the SLIGHTEST error throws you back to a loading screen, which you stare at for about 20 seconds. There's no detailed explanation of what you're supposed to do in a level until you're there, so expect to spend several minutes just figuring out what's expected of you. And once you know what you're doing, expect to do it over and over and over again. There are no check points, there is no way to save during a level, there is no way to lower the difficulty of the game: you just have to do the same thing repeatedly until you get it.

I spent two hours trying to complete a 40 second level. Then I went back to the store where I purchased the game. At first, I found Stuntman fun. After a few hours, all I felt was anger and frustration. For me, it stopped being a game and became an annoying chore.

If you are incredibly good at games, particularly driving games, and if you have an endless supply of patience, by all means, buy this game. It will be right up your alley. If you are not the Zen Master Super Gamer, rent it first, or you might find yourself loudly practicing every bit of profanity you're familiar with.

Do u really want Stuntman?

Stuntman is a sweet game it is diffenitely worth the price. The only thing I don't like is that u can't go out for a drive in a city like Midnight Club. But other words the game is well worth it if u are into high graphics and insane stunts in tricked out cars............ u Diffinitely need to put this on ur Wishlist. If u are more of the racing type I suggest u purchase Granturismo3.

Fun...but frustrating.

Overall, this is a good game. If I could give it a 3.5, I would, but I don't believe it is deserving of a 4 star rating. It is extremely fun at times, but several of the stunts required are so tedious that they pull the game down.

The key mode of the game is Career mode, in which you take the role of an up and coming stunt man. You are given a movie to work on and you go scene by scene completing various stunts that the director shouts to you through a microphone. Once several scenes in a movie are completed to the director's liking, you are paid and a movie trailer is thrown together using pre-rendered footage and snippets of some of the stunts that you pulled off.

It sounds great, and it is, but the problem that I had was the way in which the scenes are set up. A real stunt man has usually memorized the stunt that he is about to perform. He knows which way to turn at every corner before the cameras start rolling. In this game, you are told what to do just as you near the corner. You must react to the director's calls while the camera is rolling and in most cases if you're off in the slightest, you ruin the whole take and must start from the beginning. This often leads to take after take of crashes, flips and other frustrating blunders.

There are good points to this game too. The game obviously focuses on stunts and they often end up with a very realistic look. This is due in part to the physics engine used for this game. The creators took special care in making sure that the cars acted like cars, trucks acted like trucks, and everything else acted like it was supposed to. The other part of the game that gave it that realistic look was the damage that the cars took during stunts. When you slam into the ground at high speed or grind against a barrier, parts dent and in some cases fall off. In one scene, while trying to jump over a house I clipped the roof, which sent me into a high-speed spiral, sending parts of my car in every direction. It looked amazing in the replay, which is another great feature. Scenes are recorded while you attempt them and at any time you can stop and watch the replay of what you have up to that point. The replay is shown very cinematically. Sky cameras, ground cameras, and multiple other shots are used to show you what you've done. It can be very fun to watch after completing an entire stunt or a horrible crash like what I mentioned above.

Several other plusses to this game are the other modes of play. There is a "Stunt Constructor" which allows you to build your own stunts using toys, such as ramps, and vehicles you've collected throughout your career. There are also tests to help you with the basics of driving or let you practice some basic to advanced stunts. These are fun to play with when the career mode gets too frustrating, but almost the entire game revolves around the career mode.

Like I said, this is a fun yet frustrating game. I would almost equate it to the license tests in the Gran Turismo series. If you threw your controller and turned your Playstation off before getting an "A" license, then this game is probably not for you and I would recommend renting it first. If, however, you have the patience to try, try and try again, it can be very fun and rewarding.

Frustrating

After spending some more time with this game, I have decided it is necessary to update my review. I have changed my rating from 2 to 3, but many of the statements I originally made still stand. I don't understand the claims that this game is too easy. This is one of the hardest and most frustrating games I have ever played. It is an innovative concept - you're a movie stuntman and you drive around doing whatever the director tells you to do, whether it's slamming into some boxes, jumping a gap, tailing a car, or executing a cannon roll. Some of the scenes have really cool segments, like jumping through trains and stuff. And the graphics are good as well, although you do experience some slowdown if there's too much action going on. The biggest problem with this game is it's infuriating difficulty level. You can expect to restart most of the levels at least 50 times. When you get to the last movie, it's more like 100 times. What's worse is that every time you restart, the level has to reload. I've never understood why some games have to do that while others do not. Realize that unless you are a very patient gamer who actually enjoys extremely difficult games, you will experience many instances of controller-hurling fury.

This game does have its good points, however. Once you finish some of the more insane scenes, it's great fun to be able to sit back and watch the replay, and then save it so you can show your friends. There are also some extra modes in the game that add more depth. After each movie you finish, you unlock a daredevil stunt show where you get to attempt some pretty cool stunts in an arena. And I found myself spending a lot more time than I thought I would with the stunt arena constructor. As you progress through the game, you unlock toys to create your own stunt arena and vehicles to try them out with. My only complaint is that you are somewhat limited as to how many toys you can put in your arena.

Overall, this is a pretty solid game. You will get many fun hours out of it if you have the patience to endure the time it takes to nail down the route you have to take through each scene. I just can't help but think that a few changes here and there could have made the game a lot better.

Not a kids' game

I'm tired of hearing kids who write their reviews, complaining that "It's too hard" or "They don't hold your hand and explain what to do in every aspect of every new stunt", or "I can't complete the stunt unless I perform it well". The game is rated "Teen", so if you're under 13, don't buy it. Go rent Ecco the Dolphin, or better yet, trade your PS2 in for a GameCube so you can play easy children's games.
The game can be described very simply. Anyone that's ever seen an action movie has seen outrageous car stunts. This game lets you perform these stunts. Some of the stunts are even based on stunts from actual movies, like the 1970's movie "Hooper" with Burt Reynolds. You tear through the town performing stunts, finally driving under the falling smokestacks and nitro-jumping the fallen bridge.
The game is pretty hard, but a good part of its appeal is overcoming the difficulty and showing off your driving skills. Sure, you have to perform each stunt perfectly to succeed, but then how many movies have you seen where the stunts are performed sloppily or incorrectly?
The physics are realistic, and although the graphics are not the best for the PS2, it doesn't detract at all from the game. The 5-10 second load times are annoying, but nothing to complain about.
If you need an easy game to burn through in a weekend, this is not the game to get. If you want a good driving game in which you have to rely on your driving skills and grit to do well, this is your game.

Hard as sin, choppy gameplay, but somehow very rewarding

I was one of the lucky few... ok a bunch of people who "pre-ordered" this from best buy, I got the shirt. I got it, and read reviews about it, and the reviews were mixed; but since i loved the driver series, except for its insane difficulty. I wanted to give this game a go, at first i liked it.... this is how the game basically went for me I would play and be like this is sweet, coolness replays make me laugh when i screwed up, i replayed and replayed. and along the way i would drop numerous "F bombs," and "MF's" and an insane amount of "thats F*ing bs." I actually quite liked it, i just needed to take breaks between play so i would get an anurism in my brain. The unique style of gameplay, although super frustrating, had endings of sequences that were extremely satisfactory. Watching the tralers of the movies with your stunts in the trailer was an incredible idea, I kept saying to my mom, and friends, "check this out, thats me! i did that! :D :D" the game filled me with glee everytime i beat something insanely hard.

3 things about the game made me want to stop playing, many times, the super annoying director guys voice; and the horrible Frames Per Second, and gittery car physics. I swear the FPS in the game would never get above 50, at most; and when stuff was flying all over the screen forget about it, it was like watching a slow-motion replay. the guys voice was so annoying, ugh.. take 1, take 2, take 3. ROLLING, i wish he would just be quiet if he knew what was good for him. Sometimes i would hit his cameras on purpose. hah.

Car physics gets its own new paragraph, cause they were simply put; MOON GRAVITY PHYSICS. Truly, the cars would hit a curb and bounce up in the air, or on the final level, smash curb and flip over; in a lamborghini yeah... right. I kept telling myself the gravity was like that so you could get air-born for the stunts. But a little bit of tweaking, would have made this game so much more playable and not throw controller down frustrating.

I end this with the fact that i beat the game on Friday, 2 nights ago, well... saturday morning. I really enjoyed the game, the replays were great, and i actually felt like i accomplished something great when i was done. not too mention that i can play all the missions again, for a few kicks. and forcing my sister to beat it makes her better at other driving games.

Go Buy Grand Theft Auto 3 Instead!!!!!!!

This game is such a let down I can't tell you!
as I'm sure you know, this game is based on the career of a stuntman. going through several stunts for different movies while in career mode. The PROBLEM with this game is you are paid to do scenes EXACTLY as the director wants you to.You are never given any set up as to how the stunt will go! you just hop in the car and hope you can do as instructed a split second before you get there, and if you miss, you'll be starting the scene over. basically you need to do each stunt over and over until you can get through every part perfectly. NOT FUN!!! the ONLY thing this game has going for it is the graphics, which I quickly lost sight of with frustration.

This game is made by Atari, and Reflections. the makers of the great detruction derby games. Sorry guys YOU BLEW IT THIS TIME!!

Beyond Driving

Atari and Reflections Interactive teamed up to create an original and innovative driving game. In Stuntman's career mode you start out as a rookie driver and progress though six different movie sets. On each movie you will have to complete three to five stunt sequences. Every time you complete a movie you will get to see a rendered trailer of the film with your stunt sequences in it. You will get to drive all different types of vehicles from sports cars to snowmobiles. There are also three driving games included - precision tests, speed tests and stunt tests. My favorite of these driving games was the stunt tests. There are ten stunt tokens placed throughout a course and you are given a limited amount of time to collect them all. Game trailers are also included for Driver 3, Superman and Splashdown.

The graphics are usually very good but there are occasional jaggies that pop up. The cars also take damage and parts fly off of them. The pedestrians on the street are not very detailed though. The sound is good and the game has a decent soundtrack. The voice acting in the trailers is great. The controls are decent and take very little time to get used to. The steering at first seemed a little stiff but you get used to it.

If you get frustrated easy you should not even attempt to play this game. The levels are challenging and one false move could ruin the entire run. If there is a fault in Stuntman it is the load times. It takes awhile to load in between stunts and if you fail a stunt there is about a ten second load time till you can restart. The game has an average amount of replay value. I really enjoyed this game. There was nothing more satisfying than watching a replay of a stunt you just completed. This game is only recommended for those who are looking for a challenge.

Definitely worth the effort!

As soon as I saw the ads for this game I wanted it. But then I read all of these negative reviews and hesitated for quite some time. In spite of that, I recently broke down and bought it and have not been disappointed at all. I spent an entire weekend playing this game and never once got tired of it. This game definitely requires patience, however. If you are looking for an easy game to finish quickly, then this is not for you. However, if you want a top-notch, realistic driving game then buy Stuntman. Granted, you may have to attempt a scene many times (took me 21 tries to get one scene right). But this is part of what makes this game so enjoyable. Stunts in the movies are done perfectly, so why would you make a game about movie stunts that does not require the same? It also seems that people are really hung up on the loading between scenes. True this happens, but it is only 5 seconds and never once did I feel frustrated while waiting for it to load. You are too pumped up waiting to restart the stunt. The graphics are fine, the physics of the game are very lifelike, and the feeling of watching the movies trailer that contains footage of the stunts you spent all the time and hard work creating is awesome. This is a game for adults who enjoy a challenge. Enough of these young kids posting that this game is too difficult. It is not too difficult, they are just too impatient and lack the attention span to keep trying until you get it right. If you stick with it you will get all of the stunts done, and then I'm sure that you will agree with me that this game is extraordinarily fun and worth every penny.
