It is your destiny...

I have followed the progress of this game since the Electronics Entertainment Expo of 2001 in May, and I have only progressively been more impressed since. Think about it; where else can you blast stormtroopers, crush Rebel scum, or, if you are lucky or skilled enough, seek out a Jedi hidden amongst the galaxy to train you in the ways of the Force? Thought so.

And if you would rather just live in the Star Wars galaxy, hang out in a cantina with your friends, and maybe go hunting every once in a while, that perfectly fine. This isn't so much a game as much as it is an environment; the game developers made this world for us to live and play in. You might be suprised at how many friends you can make while playing.

Star Wars, from the very beginning, has always been known for outstanding visuals, and this game is no exception. Not only that, but this game is very flexible. The minimum requirements of your computer's hardware are relatively modest, but the graphics engine is so scalable that no card on the market today can play this game with all of the features turned up to the max.

Traditional MMORPGs (Massively Multiplay Online Role Playing Games) point back the the genre's past; all the characters pick from one of about a half-dozen "classes" that define the skills your characters will learn in the game. All players have to earn experience by killing creatures or players in the game. Star Wars Galaxies will be different. Experience is awarded based on skill use; not killing enemies. This means that a medic can heal people and gain in skill, the way it should be.

Grouping with your friends will be easier than ever. Because there are merely skills, and not "levels" for your character, or avatar, a new player is not a severe disadvantage when trying to play with a veteran player. In addition, players can designate themselves to be placed into a "I help newbies" database that new players can use to search out someone willing to help them learn the ropes in the game.

The economies of past games have been paid really, only lip service. Money was worthless and skilled players could become self-sufficient, making the idea of a collective economy pointless. In Star Wars Galaxies, no one player can accumulate all the skills necessary to supply all of his needs; he must work together with other players to get his weapons, armor, medical packs, and food. Besides stores and direct trading, there are 'bazaars' where players can put an item onto a market network where players can browse through and buy what they want. Item decay will ensure that players will need to replace or maintain weapons and other items, hopefully creating a more stable economy, and one that is fun to work with.

One would be remiss if they were to neglect the incredible player customizing tool available when you first create your avatar. More variables than ever allow you to adjust hair color, style, eye color, shape, nose size, shape and width, body type, height, ears, neck, and enough other features that if one wished to, they could create a reasonable approximation of themselves in the game. Of course, cosmetic things like tatoos, hair and eye color will be adjustable in the game, via the "image designers".

All in all, this is one game that can bring the online game to the masses; plus... where else can you crack "I've got a bad feeling about this" or "May the Force be with you" and get a positive reaction?

The NDA has been lifted, and finally this beta tester can give you the inside scoop on what will be THE game for 2003...and for Star Wars fans everywhere!

We've come a long way, baby, and while the game isn't a perfectly polished diamond, it's no cubic zirconia either. The fundamental goal of the game remains intact: Star Wars: Galaxies will give you the opportunity to live, work, fight, play, explore and interact in the Star Wars universe.

Begin the game by choosing a character. You'll be blown away by the sheer number of choices. Choose gender and species (including human, Mon Calamari, Wookie, Zabrak--think Darth Maul, tatoos and all--and others, complete with different characteristics for each). Then customize your avatar, with different hairstyles, skin tones, facial shapes, and species-specific settings such as tatoos or fur patterns. You could spend hours simply customizing the way you look, or choose "Randomize All" to look over just a few of the unique possibilities in no time.

After choosing an appearance, you'll choose a starting profession. But never fear, no matter what you start off with, you can always go in different directions once you've entered the game. Become a blaster-wielding space cowboy by beginning as a Novice Marksman, heal wounds as a Medic, relieve battle fatigue as an Entertainer, try your hand at tailoring and architecture as an Artisan, get down-and-dirty as a Brawler, or engage your yen to travel as a Scout.

If you've never played an MMORPG before, or if you want a proper introduction to the game, begin by going through the helpful tutorial, which will explain basic systems of the game to you. Once you've learned your way around, you'll choose a starting planet, and you'll probably open the helpful "Holocron" to give you some ideas on where to go from there. Find a bank, take on some missions, store your "clone" data (just in case a no-good Tusken Raider decides to use your furry hide for target practice), chat with other players, and get ready for adventure.

The learning curve is mild. Expect to spend a few hours getting accustomed to the interface--this beta tester had no experience with MMORPGs at all before entering the streets of Mos Espa for the first time, and in no time at all, I was heading out into the desert to bullseye womp rats.

Where you go from there is up to you. As an artisan, you can survey for the perfect raw materials, then combine them to make the perfect blaster, a stylish jacket, a house, or even a power-up dinner. As a combat-oriented character, take on missions or wander the wilds, blasting randomly-spawning creatures or destroying smuggler's encampments. As an explorer, create encampments for other players to rest and heal, and hunt creatures so you can harvest their meat, bones and hide. Sell your wares on "Star Wars Ebay," the bazaar, or purchase a vendor to sell them for you. And when you're all done visiting Jabba's Palace, searching for C-3PO and R2-D2's crashed escape pod, plumbing the depths of a cave filled with Corellian savages, or hanging out with Boss Nass on Naboo, head to the Cantina to watch the dancers and listen to the musicians.

Player-versus-player action hasn't been neglected. Sign up for either the Rebel Alliance or the Imperial Empire, then declare yourself as an Overt member to take potshots at members of your enemy faction whenever, whereever. For those of us craving a less intense look at PVP, become a "Covert" member, thus keeping other players from blasting you at will...until you decide to go Overt. Then, anything goes.

There are still bugs to be worked out, and features to be added. Many discussions on the beta boards have resulted in changes to the game already, and more are on the way. But that said, this is no WWII Online or Ultima Online. The game is stable, functional, and, most importantly, fun.

Where will it go from here? Like any MMORPG, the developers can only truly provide a framework for the players to take the game where they will. In this case, the framework is the best of any MMORPG out there. I'll be there on opening day, helping to shape it from day one.

If you are a Star Wars fan, an MMORPG player, or both--or, like me, you've always wanted to jump on the MMORPG bandwagon, but never had the opportunity--this is your chance. Shuttles are leaving for Mos Eisley every ten minutes. Climb aboard, and let the adventure of a long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away, begin for you!

I am a beta player, and now that the NDA has lifted I can share my feelings. So far, I'm terrifically impressed. Of the MMOG's I have played, this is well rounded with a nice balance between crafting and combat. The graphics are lovely, and the freedom and open-endedness of the game are excellent. I've ordered the collector's edition and a regular copy (no sunglasses for j00, wife). I will be playing for quite some time.

There are caveats. It is an online role-playing game, so don't expect a dedicated plot that will make you the hero of the empire. If that's your thing, try Knights of the Old Republic or Jedi Knight II.

A MMOG is also a dynamic universe. Expect to see patches and changes. Take the message boards with a grain of salt, and if you don't think you can handle anything less than a flawless product, don't pick it up on launch day.

SWG is different from many previous MMOGs in that you are limited to a single-character per server (unless you unlock the force sensitive slot). This forces a lot of interraction between players. That can be a good or a bad thing. Be warned.

The force sensitive slot can be unlocked by your character's actions in the game. Once that slot is unlocked, you can create a second character who may eventually be able to become a Jedi. No one managed to unlock the FS slot in beta. It is estimated that there will never be more than a handful of Jedi on each server. If being a Jedi is your only motivation behind playing this game, it is not a guaranteed thing. Be warned.

If it sounds like I'm focusing on the negative aspects of the game, that's not my intention. I think this game is going to have a lot of appeal and a great lifespan (especially with the planned expansions), but I also believe this game isn't for everyone. I will, however, be there on Day One.

ok, the game charges a 12$ a month fee, but that's the bad news, the good news is that you can be ANYTHING, ever want to be a mon-calimari commando/bioengineer... you can now. you can also choose from the 8 species and then become EXTREMLEY different, from choosing height and weight to eye size and shape. then there;s carrers, creature handelers, commando's, artisan, pikeman, smuggler, just to name a few of about ohh say 50. YES!!!! 50 CARRERS, and with the new game expansion (that came out for free) you can become a politian, and mount on dewback and several other creatures, HATE TKERS? (people that kill their own teammates on purpose just for laughs)WELL ME TOO, well swg prevents that with several ways. PLUS PARENTS THAT ARE WORRIED FOR THEIR CHILD"S PROTECTION....not a problem, a censor is placed over words you think may not be appropriate for them, and if you are a parent your self and don't mind you can change taht (much like the aol parental controll) not to mention you become a REBEL OR AN IMPERIAL, yes you can become EITHER!, i have friends who have full stormtrooper armour, a 3 man firing squad of commando storm troopers and have an outpost (large enough to be a base) with at least 20 troopers and 2 AT-STs!!!, but you can do the same with rebels, have a 3 man firing squad of tough as nails troopers and a base of feedom loving men. and now people have unlocked JEDI!!!!!!! yes you can become a jedi though it would take a month or two, you would be able to take on 3 rancors at the same time (rancors are the big monsters that luke killed at the begginning of return of the jedi in jabbas palace), just think soo much power!!! And to the people that say "no veichels" your wrong, desperatley wrong, in june 04 an expansion (which will unfortunatley cost another 14 dollars to install, but wont add more $ to your bill) will be released where you will be able to pilot xwings, tie fighters, and tons of other stuff, not to mention that will include 2 more species, Gungans (jar jar binks) and the aliens that have a very strange mouth (seen in the bar at the begginning of a new hope that obi-wan kills for giving luke a hard time). so this is a MUST HAVE GAME, BUY OR BE SAD FOR THE REST OF FOREVER, JUST GO TO to check out pics, a quick note about this game is that it KICKED THE LIVING **** OUTTA KOTOR, and if you liked that you will go crazy for swg, and the minimum requirements are met very easily, my friend has just barley the minimum req's and it runs great, and the graphic are blazing on my computer (athlon 2600, 1gb ddrram, 80 gb hard drive, and a geforce 5200 (128 MBs), so you NEED this game, and what else would you do with 12 dollars? buy some bottle rockets (which i'd like to add you can make in swg)? a new shirt? c'mon this game is GOLD!!!!!!!!

I'm one of the Beta Testers for this game and I'm here to tell you...It's worth the wait! You will immerse yourself in what is to be the biggest Star Wars gaming experience EVER!!! I've played it, and ordered it. No Star Wars or Online Gamer will be dissapointed.

OKAY, I read all the reviews I could about this game, and I really had doubts about buying it. I mean, it really semmed like a love it, or hate it game. Many of the people who hated it played the Beta; well I never did, but maybe there was something different in it. You really have to understand that in this game, you make your own story! It is NOT just "hack n' slash" it is much more. I mean you can have a blast in this game without even picking up a gun! People build weapons, armor, powerups, you can learn to play an instument, dance, it's just so expensious! It took me about two days to really get into the game, and now I really see how good it is! Once I was out on a 2 mission voyage with 2 other people who I just met, and went through battles, and sat at the camp we made on Tatooine with the sun setting, I wondered how can someone not enjoy this? As far as the special edition, I HAD to get it because the stores were out of the regular edition, but now I dont regret the extra money. The art book is really great, and the boxing is really nice; just makes it seem all that much more brilliant. And I hear that it's supposed to get even better!

I've played EQ for about two years now and didn't know what to expect with only my second MMORPG game experience. Reading reviews from folks who played the beta, I expected a release like the WW2 online game from a while back that never got fixed. But playing it for about two weeks now, I can happily say that it has been a near perfect gaming experience for me. For the reviewer that says that he disconnected 6 times a day, check your machine or check your internet provider, cause I'm in Germany and I have never lost connection. The only complaint I have about this game is the fact that if I am on an uncompleted mission when I log out, when I log back in and follow the waypoints back to my objective, there has been a couple times that my objective was gone. No biggy, I just go get another mission, a little time taken away. Anyway, i've enjoyed this game and I have found myself hooked like I was to EQ so long ago.

Star Wars Galaxies: An Empire Divided was the game that wowed E3 participants and has been a much-waited-for release. A MMORPG about Star Wars? How more perfect than that could you get?

Being an incredibly enthusiastic fan of MMORPGs, and trying just about every new one that comes out, I got my hands on the Collector's Ediction of the Star Wars Galaxy box as soon as I could. It had a few extras - signed manual, little figure, patch and pin.

But of course the real test is actual gameplay. If you are at all a fan of the Star Wars saga, it is just SO neat to get into the game and hear that familiar music, and start choosing from the available races. The choices are great - Human, Wookiee, Bothan, Mon Calamari, Rodian, Trandoshan, Twi'lek, or Zabrak. You choose male or female, and then the type of character.

The customization of your character is simply AMAZING. You change eyes, hair, tattoos, shape, size, EVERYTHING. While many other games make a female a "Barbie Big Breasted Bimbo", in this one you can make your character look as realistic as you want - tweaking literally every part! You really end up with a character that you feel fully comfortable with.

There's a training mission that walks you nicely through every part of gameplay, from moving to combat to talking to other people. I found the controls very intuitive and while there was a moment that I was "jetissoned into space", I'm sure those bugs will go away as the game goes on.

Then, when you're ready, you head out into the real world - choosing from your favorite planets! I hopped onto Naboo, and wandered around a visually lush world. There were NPCs to talk to, missions to go on ... but sadly, very few people. Yes, it's a brand new release, so hopefully more people will be coming on soon. It's still a bit depressing to go into a thriving city and have it seem like a post-holocaust wasteland.

Like any MMORPG, it comes down to how much YOU enjoy the world that is there, and what sorts of friends you meet to have fun within it. If SciFi and Star Wars are your thing, this is the place for you!

Fun online game but will, and I say Will take up time. Depending on your character of course; but you will be almost required to log in each day or every other day to pay rent or harvesters or other things once you own them. Or if you plan to be a crafter, be sure you have Lots of Time each night. Great graphics, sure some lag bugs but what game doesn't?

This game is horrible. It has consumed my life. To date I've lost my job, a girlfriend, and my car has been repo'd. I love it though, more than my own family, it's all I ever do. I've prepaid for a year, once that runs I don't know what I'll do.
