Worst MMORPG Launch Title Ever.

Pointless, monotonous and completely underdeveloped. This game might improve within 6-12 months, when the developers actually finish it. Makes me feel like I paid for a movie and was only allowed to watch the previews. Horribly boring combat system, broken quests, empty zones and an absolute pointless game.

Not sure what they were thinking on this one

Do you want to know what kind of loot you get? Broken stuff! I KID YOU NOT! So you risk life and limb and you loot the corpse with excitement to find... a broken datapad! (or other broken items that you just have to destroy) I STILL want someone to pay dearly for this insult.

I know what you are thinking.. you are thinking that surely there is SOME good loot out there! NOPE. They intentionally designed the game so that the best stuff can be crafted by players with a high skill. Guess what this means? Turn to page 64 (or whatever) and look to see what the best armor is (or weapon) and make it. Ok. DONE. Why go out and kill now? This is an important point. WHY GO OUT AND KILL NOW?

And the bugs are horrible! And they are getting worse! I thought Shadowbane had bugs! It was a cakewalk compared to this game. And I mean BAD bugs. Unacceptable Bugs.

The game will probably be fun for a new player for about 2-3 weeks. It takes that long to realize that there is no point.

Took about 30 mins.

Summary:

Overall: 1
Gameplay: 1
Graphics: 2
Sound: 4

System:

CPU: 1.7 P4
RAM: 640MB PC-800 RDRAM
Video: GeForce3

General/Summary: I was a beta tester, and with the NDA gone I can tell everyone that, "This game is not out of beta yet!" Anyone who purchases this game on June 26th will be paying full MSRP to participate in open beta. Bugs abound, and not even little annyoing ones, but HUGE gamestoppers. Buyer Beware! At least for a period of time from release to at least 3 months or so.
Gameplay: There seems to be a lot of depth to what you can do at first, buy a house, get married, splice professions... Be a gunfighting doctor musician etc... But any way you slice it... It gets pretty old FAST.

Graphics: Ok... Have you all seen the publicity shots and videos from E3? How everything is nice and curvy and there's Environment Reflections out the whazoo, and beautiful shadows and lighting effects? Well, so have I, and I'm not sure what game that is... but it's not SWG... In fact the Devs even admitted to putting a cap on the graphics, at least in the beta I was playing no more than 3 days ago. As they are, they aren't awful... But they're getting a low score from me for misleading advertisement. By the way, there's (was) a bug that kills your character if you have shadows activated in the city and are using an ATI card.

Sound: The saving gracec of this game, if you close your eyes and don't touch the keyboard or mouse... at least it SOUNDS like Star Wars, even if it doesn't look, play, or feel like Star Wars. So you can probably enjoy that aspect... that is until it crashes due to a C++ Runtime error for no apparent reason.

still not very good..

I've played this game since a week after its release. I rated it 3stars then and i'm rating it 3stars now. Though the game has improved a fair amount over the past few months and has reach the level of "stable", i still would call this game beta. Once you start to reach an advanced level of combat, you start to realize how inconsistant and counter-intuitive the entire combat system is. There is still a huge gap in content. I still play the game today but casually; my biggest problem is finding something worthwhile to do? The content just isnt there and im not the type of player who "makes their own content" as other people say i should be doing heh :P.

The other thing that bothers me alot in this game is the lack of polish in the user interface and the graphics. There are numerous UI bugs and graphics issues (like combat queue reseting position, language and player title reseting, this huge ugly mouse cursor is always in the way - even when i switch to look mode, sunglare appears indoors and even when you cant see the sun, custom weapon attachments arent visible to other players - only to yourself, the list goes on); and these bugs have been here since launch!.. we're coming up to the one-year mark here...

My advice is to wait a few months so that the game has a chance to improve a bit more and so that you have a chance to compare it to other MMO games that are coming out soon.

I bought this version of the game, and I am quite happy that I did. However, I also didn't mind spending a few extra bucks, and I like Star Wars. When I really look at what I got, it wasn't a whole lot to be honest.

There is the actual game (which is great and I rated a 5... but that's for the regular version, not the collectors edition). Then, you get a silly little figurine, which resembles a 2 inch silver toy solder from space. Not very exciting. You can hardly tell what it is. The back of the manual has the signatures of the most important developers printed on (not my cup of tea, really, but if it gets you excited...). There are a few minor things, like a Star Wars pin I believe.

The only thing that is any good here is the "Art of Star Wars Galaxies" book. This is pretty cool (and apparently can't be purchased elsewhere). But whether or not it is worth 30 bucks more than the regular version is up to you to decide...

It's good. But not Star Wars.

I've been playing this game since it was released. I can tell you that gameplay is extremely dependent on who you play with. The game mechanics themselves are very intuitive and workable, in fact most folks find it relatively easy to choose their skills and get to where they want to be very easily if they can find people to help them get there.

From there, the list of things to do is limited only by one's imagination. This is not a game that spoon feeds you "what to do next", it's much more a game designed for interaction with other players. You make a lot of decisions, and often log on not because you want to "do something", but just to see what's going on in the group you like to hang out with. Knowing folks from England, Australia, and Germany who all interact and help each other overcome in-game challenges, quests and puzzles is fun, and you inevitably find yourself discussing the occasional Real Life (RL) issue or three.

A HUGE downfall for me with this game, is the lack of Star Wars feel. Wen the guy u r talkign ot cantspell or tpye, and his name is "Bulges Downbelow", the Wookiee, who's house is named "Phat Luut Shack", and you get the feeling he's 15 years old, you quickly realize that you aren't on Corellia anymore. There IS NO roleplaying in this MMOrpG, and SOE isn't out to put any in anytime soon.

In conclusion, you're either going to love or hate this game, but don't think of it as Star Wars. It's not. It's just a Sci-Fi setting for playing a video game with some cool folks you meet, and shaking your head with a soft chuckle at the idiots you find among them.

Vast potential for greatness

If you are a casual gamer and do not want to play a game for at least a little bit every other day, this is not the game for you. Fans of the MMORPG genre will understand. Star Wars Galaxies is an incredibly flexible game that is based mostly on player content. If you just pick up the game and play for 30 minutes one day, you WILL write a bad review because you do not understand how the genre works. MMORPGs are based mostly on PLAYER content and very little on developer content. If you play this game, it is up to you on how fun it can be, and the more you interact with other players, the more fun it is. A person who does not grasp this concept will not enjoy this game. The game is very pseudo-realistic, nothing is given to you, you're character must work for everything you obtain. Customization is almost limitless, every single character has a very unique look. It is true, this game does have quite a few bugs in it, and it was pushed out a little too soon, but since it is totally online, bug-fixes come out almost daily. New content is always being added, and if you only play this game for 30 minutes one day and can't get anything accomplished, don't buy it, this game's not for you; go play Knights of the Old Republic. I've been playing this game for almost 5 months now, just shortly after it was released I started. Several things were a problem when the game was first released that are no longer an issue due to updates. Now players can buy mounted creatures and vehicles to get around with many new changes slated for the next few months. All in all this game has great potential and a very macrocosmic scope, which is exactly what a MMORPG should be!

NDA is up, my opinion, as a beta player.

I've been in beta for a while now, and I can reliably say that I will play this game as soon as it goes live. That said, I think people need to have a realistic view of this game. I had such high hopes, and really an unrealistic picture in my mind of this game before I got into beta. When I did, I won't lie to you, it was a let down. Not because of the bugs, or anything the game does really. It's just not the game you think it is. That said, I still love it. It's not ready for retail, but my opinion means little at this point. I DO encourage you to play it though, and stick with it even with all the problems you're going to encounter. It's a great game, I'd just advise you to get rid of any ideas you have in your head of what it's going to be like.

Great vision, horrible implementation, in-game service...

Star Wars Galaxies is a good game, gone bad. The feature set is great, with lots of playable professions, etc. There are are bugs however, throughout. Hard-core MMORPG fans (who read online forums for fun) will be mildly aggravated. However the casual player is likely to just quit playing. My advice: this game can be great fun... if you aren't into knowing about the bug du-jour I'd suggest waiting a few months.
