A great great game

There is not much to add to that statement. This game has it all. Vehicles you can ride and shoot from. Puzzles using a realistic physics engine which judge the weight of an object. Large battles against faceless soldiers who use cover and strategy to attack you. A graphics engine with a level of detail permitting you to see soldiers from far away and actually tell what they are doing (or if you have made a successful shot). Great interactivity allowing you to employ different strategies in the same firefight and still win. In one scene, I had enough time to stack boxes to get to a second floor to wait for some soldiers coming to attack me and fight from a new location. It has the science fiction for the SF fans and the horror for the Doom3 fans, In a particularly ghoulish part, you can use large saw blades to slice zombies in half using the antigrav gun. Finally, a race against the clock ending.

As with the first installment, the story unfolds in front of you and you never get the complete story but unstead piece together enough facts to figure out what is going on. It would be nice if Gordon could ask a few questions so even more of the story becomes apparent, but hey, a minor quibble.

The weapon selection is not out of this world, but the antigrav gun is a real cool weapon and/or tool, allowing you to pick up, place and toss inanimate objects, including exploding fuel barrels.

The bosses can be tough but not frustrating and in each case the way to beat the monster is not by luck through button mashing but usually a change in strategy.

This is definitely an M Rated game and I would not let kids or young teens play it. Some of the scenes are nightmarish in their look and feel.

The one drawback - and it is a big one - I have to wait until the next installment to play the next game.

If you liked the original, you'll love this.

This is an excellent sequel - it brings back the ambiance and feel of the original Half-Life, but with new physics and graphics that take it all to a new level. The story is great, the vehicles are a blast to drive, and there are some truly creepy parts too. CounterStrike has also been remade exquisitely. The gameplay is just like the original, but everything works and looks better than before. All of the old maps are back, and there are many new ones as well (some of which are even better than the old ones). The only problem with CS is that the weapons have been given fictitious names that no longer reflect the actual weapons that they are based on. Perhaps this was done to remove an element of reality in an effort to protect children or something, but regardless of the motivation it was a bad move. Those of us who played the original version know what the real names are (and some of us that are familiar with weapons in general know what the real names are), and it's frustrating to constantly see the wrong name in the price list. Other than that, this is a great game that perfectly matches Half-Life 2.

DVD not CD

Great Game! But on the Friday sales they keep listing this item as [CD]. It is not. It is on DVD. Just giving fair warning to anyone who may want to pick up this game, make sure you have a DVD-ROM drive, or buy the non-collector's edition.

That said, this game is amazing. A good mix of strategy and plain old blow sh*t up.

Great Game For HL Lovers and Newbies

Being a huge fan of the HL series from inception, I was more excited than Mick Jagger at a fashion show. Despite the monster install session (1 Hour) and Valve's Steam engine annoyances I got it all up and running and I quickly got thrown into the best 1st person shooter I have ever seen. Game play is intense, story line compelling, and the physics engine is a blast since you can pick up, throw, and shoot just about anything with real world like consequences. And the Gravity Gun. Come on! I wish I had one of those to use around the office.

If you claim to be a gamer you will be a hack if this isn't in your pantheon of fine games. Word!

i'm not a big fan of shooters...

but this was just an unbelievable game. yes valve dropped the ball with their ridiculous steam bulls%$t. yes i was excited to finish half-life 2 just so i could erase that damn steam off my hard drive for eternity (and especially so i could stop it's annoying self from popping up every time i started my computer). but don't let these really bad things stand in the way of getting the game...it's really that great.

Best PC Game I Ever Played!!!

Half Life 2 is a very great game. Out of all the PC games i played which is many LOL, this would be the best game ever!!! This game only has 2 cons and a few pros.

Pros: 1. The graphics are superb and they give the best detail ive ever seen...
2. You get to drive a boat, get a gravity gun which is awesome, and battle very cool looking creatures.
3. Very cool weapons and guns to put down you foes..
4. The character is very likable, hes like a duke nukem of the sci fi games.

Cons: 1. Unfortanately, you need a very good computer to play it and a good graphics cards as well. My game lagged the whole time i played making it very slow and choppy and froze alot. So, i didnt get the real experience of playing.
2. You have to install 5 cds and it takes quite a while to do it. Plus, you have to install Steam which takes a while to install right. So, the waiting time sucks and steam and the game together take up half your computer's space. (people with lots of space and room dont worry about the space problem.)

Overall, besides the install times it is the best PC game of all time and the funnest. Anyone who plays Pc games should definitely buy this one... definitely!!!!!

Well Deserved Game of the Year

Yes, this game is amazing.

It is not without flaws. Some seem to hate the story delivery. Personally I adored it, as it lets you piece it together. Never do you leave the eyes of your character, and never does he speak to break the feeling that you and he are one and the same. Never does a bad guy sit and give a monologue explaining it all, and never do you see what you should not see. The character is in the dark, and so is the player.
It's quite effective.

Another complaint is that the game is linear. Honestly, all action FPS games are. You go from point A to point B. Other games sometimes allow you to get from A to B via C or D, this game is a big more straight-forward, but changing that would make it feel less cinematic.

The AI is undeniably bright, however you'll rarely notice this, as it's mostly a shooting gallery. Guy shows up, guy dies. Fortunately the killing process is massively entertaining.

What sets this game apart from most, however, is the polish. It looks incredible on any computer. A great deal of love was put into the architecture, as well as crafting a living, breathing world. It's done so skillfully that you'll adore blowing it to pieces.

Highly Recommended.

Okay, after all the trouble it was to download and get started, it was still more than well worth it. This beats the original hands down. It was a visual feast with many, many surprises. The gravity gun was just amazing (especially towards the end when it had more power). The interaction with almost all objects as well as the physics engine makes this, in my opinion, one of the best first person shooters ever made.
Dang, this was some fun.

Highly recommended.

Honest Review

I'm very glad that I waited until I purcharsed a top of the line computer to play this game. The visual quality of the environments is marvelous and the game play is very fluid. I have a P4 3.2 Gig, 1 Gig of RAM, X1800 XL graphics card, and a high end monitor w/ a DVI connection. Even with the high end graphics card (w/ all settings on maximum, visual and audio) I still get a few spots in the game where it will lag for a second. However, these spots are few and far between. Also, it only lags when something incredibly amazing happens on the screen and I don't mind if it happens to freeze for a second b/c it's something that's spectacular to look at.

I played this game over a span of 5 nights for about 6 hours per night. I did this on the medium setting so it took about 30 hours of game play to finish the game. Granted, it would have taken a couple less hours if I wasn't admiring all the the graphically brilliant environments. Oh, and I highly recommend you play this game at night w/ all of the lights off. If you have a high end PC and monitor, it's pure gaming enjoyment. I did play HL2-Lost Coast on the Hard setting and that was much more challenging. The enemy can kill you much more quickly and you need to do a good bit more damage to them to get the kill. I plan to play HL2 on the dificult setting sometime next week. Let's see how far I can get w/out dying. ;)

I don't see why everyone is complaining about how the game is "on rails" or that there are a few puzzles to solve in the game. First of all, HL1 was the same way and nobody complained about it then. If you haven't played the game, so what if there's only one way. Just find it and finish the level. As for the puzzles, they don't take much time to solve and don't detract from the game at all. Just think 3 dimensionally on some of them and you'll figure it all out w/ no problem.

So many people have been complaining about STEAM. Get a grip people!!! If you have a DSL connection the "updates" to HL2, Counter-Strike Source, and Lost Coast only take about 30 minutes to download. These updates are there to fix problems in the game so that you have a better gaming experience in the first place. So stop complaining about STEAM and start thanking the fact that it exists. Otherwise, you'd be complaining about all the bugs in the game and wanting patches to fix them. W/ STEAM, all of the patches download automatically. Additionaly, you can even turn off some of the updates if you aren't interested in playing those games. That way, HL2 will update even faster. Ultimately, if you have waited over a year to play this game anyway...another 30 minutes isn't going to kill you. Just deal w/ it.

In conclusion, if you have a great computer system I highly recommend purchasing this game. It's an awesome gaming experience. The Half-Life saga is the greatest thing in PC gaming history. Also, I hear that even on slower systems the grame runs perfectly well if you turn the graphic settings down. Actually, the game will recommend which settings for you to operate w/ based on your system.

BTW, I've played CS Source and it's definitely not like Condition Zero. I much prefer CZ as it has the older CS feel but has much better graphics. Source is just too odd, it's harder to track your fire and all the people run like hunchbacks. LOL, you'll see if/when you play CS Source.

The best game I have ever played!!!

This is by far the best game I have ever played. Here are a few of my random thoughts:

It is also the most innovative I have played. The physics are amazing (in how many games have you spent 1/2 hour just playing in a child's playground). The physics puzzles are fun and help the story along.

I loved the varying locations and styles of gameplay. Each section is more fun than the previous! The game is quite long, but the different sections keep things very interesting. As you get closer to the end, the pace picks up as well as the excitement.

I think it is unfortunate that Valve chose Ravenholm (Zombie city) for the game demo. That was my least favorite section of the game. It seemed to drag a little. Almost like they were trying too hard to beat Doom3 (which BTW, isn't even a contest Half Life2 is a much better game in almost every way!). I could have driven around in the the speedboat for a lot longer.

I did not have the installation problems others spoke of. I bought the game online via Steam and a cable modem. I'm always online and was unaware of the setup problems others had. No server connection problems either.

I have a reasonably fast system (AMD 2800+, ATI 9800Pro, and 1 Gig Ram). I was able to play at 1152x864 with AA and Aniso jacked up. BEAUTIFUL visuals in the game!

Yes, this was a challenging game. But the game was so fun, I didn't mind playing some sections over-and-over till I figured out how to get by.

If you like FPS games, GET THIS GAME!!!!
