Most Enjoyable Driving Game I Ever Played!

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 4 / 5

I have been to Chicago before in the wintertime, and I have never been to a bigger and better city. Naturally, when I went to my friend's house to play Midtown Madness, I was excited since it took place in the Windy City. I have never played a more enjoyable racing game. They had the city of Chicago laid out to near perfection. The only problem is they forgot to stick a neighborhood beyond the outfield wall of Wrigley Field, but that was OK. The best mode is the cruise mode, where you can just go insane. You can chose how many cops you want on patrol, how many pedestrians you want so you can see them go diving for their lives, how much traffic you want, and the time of day and the weather. It doesn't beat actually going to Chicago, but it's close. They got the landmarks all laid out in their correct positions. The El is in this game, Sears Tower, John Hancock Center, the Wrigley Building, Soldier Field, Meigs Field, Wrigley Field, and a shopping mall that you can crash through! That's TIGHT!! The car I always chose is the Panoz Roadster. I chose a City Bus one time, but it's pretty slow. Fortunately, you can run over just about anything with a bus, but it's hard going flying over the draw bridge by the Wrigley Building. The only problem I have with this game is that Bill Gates seems to think everyone has the proper equipment to run it. Well, some of us don't. I tried downloading the trial version, but my computer wasn't up to the task. Oh well. It's still a fun game. Kudos to Microsoft!

THIS IS GREAT!

When I first got this game I doubted it to be this good. I also wondered what cars there are. Here are some: New VW Beetle, Mustang GT, Friehtliner Century (must unlock), Panoz Roadster, Cadalac Elderodo, F-150 (SUV), Cop car (must unlock, Think its a Mustang), and the City Bus (must unlock) As I said before this is an awsem game. The cops are really mean, you can go over gard rails, and race aainst the coputer. You can also hook up with other players, and play cops and robbers by trying to steal the gold. The handaling is good on this game, but graphics are ok. On the box they kind of pump up the imige off the cars with smooth lines, but thats not what it looks like on the screen. Mabey if you have a good PC it will work like that. Anyway buy it, its a good game.

Every now and then, even the most sedate among us would love to respond to our "road rage" impulses. MIDTOWN MADNESS will let us do just that.

The premise is racing through the Chicago loop to beat a clock and other onscreen racers. My boys delight in working through the variety of races to unlock faster and sleeker vehicles to race. They begin to sound like cab drivers after a few unsuccessful races, but better here than out in the "real world." Mom even enjoys a spin along the lake at times!

We did experience some minor glitches when the game was first installed on our Gateway 700. Although the graphics card should have been compatible, the race would "hang" shortly upon its start. Some time online helped us solve the problem. If you should experience the same, what we learned was: go to "Options," then "Graphics options." Set your graphic for "software renderer," then move the slider bars that control detail to the left. All the resolutions were also downgraded one step from what the installation read. Some of the detail that we'd seen in the demo at the Minnesota State Fair was lost, but the thrill of flying through Chicago traffic was still there.

Not So Mad About Midtown

I think this is a great game but it gets old. I like the consept of driving trought city streets with no tracks and you can go anyware you want. I also liked how you had to earn your cars and you can set time of day, cops, and so on. After a while it gets old and you get sick of the city because you race the same place every day. If your looking for a super racing game i would go look at Test Drive 6.

Great game but missing something ........ like HALF THE CITY

this game is great if you've gotten bored of driving in a circle all day. there are tuns of hidden places. i can spend hours just cruising around trying to get to places that seem impossible. HOWEVER, for those 3 million or so of us that live in Chicago, the game is almost insulting for its placement of buildings. They are missing about 60% of the city. I know that to include the whole thing would take a while and be tough, but they are missing roads and intersections that would make the game more fun, not to mention the miles of lower level streets by the river. Just by adding that would give you nearly 2 cities instead of just one.

I applaud Microsoft for buying the idea off who ever came up with it, but they could have done a more thorough job before releasing it.

Excellent Game...Definitely Recommended

OK, this game is excellent. Graphics, control system, fun factor, and sound are top of the line. The only problem is there is only one city to drive in...not that with all its modes it gets boring, but driving around the same place is kinda dumb. Despite this, this game continually shows me why it is one of the top racing games, for kids or adults. Cruise mode is one-of-a-kind, and single player is a great challenge to anyone. Highly Recommended from a satisfied customer...I LOVE THIS GAME!

Video card warning

This game would not work right when I installed it (parts of the screen flickered uncontrollably), so I checked the helpfile and discovered that the list of video cards with "known issues" was basically a list of every video card in existance. The solution for me (I have an ATI Rage Pro) turned out to be to disable hardware accelleration functions, which means I have to change settings and re-boot every time I want to play the game. I guess I should feel lucky- some cards don't work with this game at all.

Buckle up!

I've downloaded the trial version of MM and I certainly want the full version! I love being able to cruise around the city in whatever fashion (read: fast and reckless) as I see fit. You can't do this in real life; MM lets to pull of risky driving stunts like sidewalk passing, autobahn speeds on side streets, building crashing, cop racing, and bus slamming. Fun, fun for the agressive driver in all of us!

Although some may complain about the steep PC requirements, MM runs without complaint on my P166/Voodoo2 setup, even at 800x600 with medium detail settings. Frame rates are pretty poor (of course), but the game is still playable. An Athlon system should be able to pull 1024x768 and high graphic settings without a problem.
