A Classic Fairy-tale redone...

Okay I have only played the demo of this game, which I know will automatically receive some "boos" from those reading this review. I do have to say that after playing only the demo I was hooked!!! The graphics, the chance to ride a horse, the taking down of the colossus... it is all a great gaming experience (I have enjoyed playing this game that I have played the demo version more than once, that is how awesome this game is).
I get the experience of being "Jack the Giant-killer" in this story. The whole game lets you take down not just one "behemoth", but multiple ones all with a different challenging way of briging them down.

On the demo you have to actually climb up the beast to the top of his head and jab your sword into his skull, multiple times, before he is brought down (there is no "blood" or "brain matter", but rather this black stuff comes out that reminds me of smoke). Climbing the brute is not easy, since he will try very hard to shake you off. Also you have a limited "hold" capability, which means that you cannot hold on for an indefinite amount of time (you can stab the beast in various areas, one which is in his calf [reminds me of Achille's heel], which will bring him down to his knees, which helps in your climbing the brute. Also there were platforms strategically placed on his back, which helped in case you needed to rest, but you need to hold on, because you sway, and can potential fall off, as the beast moves).

The colossi A.I. is brilliantly done and the landscape is indeed breath taking. I tend not to like to pay full price for games (I buy them when they are on sale or used), but this is definitely one of those games that I would not mind paying full price for.

Addendum: Another "great" thing about this game is the fact that you don't have to find "health", but that your health automatically regenerates. You still need to watch your health bar, and if need be remove yourself from combat in order to heal-up.

It wasnt what i exspected but enjoyed it just the same !

How this could receive a bad review is beyond me. The story, visuals, and gameplay all feel extremely unique. It is not a very long game, but doesnt need to be. While playing it, it will feel epic, and when your done you will recommend it and likely remember it for years to come. Im excited to pick up Ico (which SotC is a prequel to) and hope that more games in this canon will continue.

I Love it

'Shadow' is one of those games which is unique and very much apart from others in it's genre. There are no puzzles to be unwound (except for determining how to kill the monsters) and there's no multitude of enemies to hack and slash. Basically, the game consists of finding giant monster bosses and cutting them down. The abandoned landscape is beautifully and masterfully done and really does feel HUGE. The bosses themselves also feel HUGE and are placed strategically throughout the large world. You only have two weapons, a sword and a bow and arrow, and while they never get upgraded, they each have their own usefullness and strengths.
I've read complaints about this game and it seems that the people who do not like this game cannot appreciate it for what it is. You really have to accept the fact that this is it's own game in it's own category and to truly be enjoyed, you just have to abandoned all expectations and let it ride. Now that it is significantly cheaper to own, it's a worthy addition to any game library. It is challenging and can be boring at times, but if played for an hour at a time, it retains it's own worth. I would NOT reccomend this title to anyone looking for a 'God of War' experience or a 'Tomb Raider' experience, but rather for any gamer looking for a truly one-of-a-kind gaming experience, with an open-mindedness for exploration.

Perfect game!!!

This is definetly one of the best games EVER for PS2.
You are completly alone on a endless land. I think that the purpose is to make us feel alone, after all, the situation is desperate and depressed.
I think that the caracter has the real essence of a Hero.
His (supposed) girlfriend (or maybe his sister) is dead and he has no one else on his life, beside his horse. He goes to a forbbiden land, habitated only by giant monsters and the only dialogue he have is with an spiritual entity that sends him away to suicidal missions.
All the buildings are ruins, and the only living beings are birds, lizzards, turtles and fishes. The enviroment is almost spiritual.
On the missions that he faces the monsters with four legs, that are fast as lions, the feeling of being chased by those creatures among the ruins is terrible. If you are catched unprepared you can barely survive.
The game sound track is a masterpiece.
This is an adventure where everything is going wrong and is against the character (we), and even so, he continues until the end with the hope of reach the impossible (the ressurection of the girl), even if this cost his own life. This is the essence of the true hero. The self sacrifice on a desperate act to find a new purpose to his life that it is now senseless. I never saw a game with a story as beautiful and as engaging.

Surprising Replayability

This was a terrific game with epic visuals. The battles are intense and complex, but never get tedious or recycled. Some of my favorite colossus to fight took me well over an hour the first time I played this through. After I beat it, it went back onto my shelf and I figured I'd be done with it. However, the story and landscapes drew me back like a good movie, and I have played through it many times now. There is also the added bonus of hard and timed modes, which yield new weapons (just for novelty, though). When the urge takes me, I sometimes switch this on and just go exploring. The land within the game is enormous, barely touched by the storyline. There are some terrifically designed places to find.

BEST GAME!!!

I just love how the game is setup thought I bet it in about 67 hours, I wouldn't trade it for anything... Truly recommended for a buy not a rent...

Unfortunately I got rid of my PS2 and I am so mad. If I could keep one game this would be it. Shadow of the Colossus is in my top 5 games of all time. The originality and creativity of this game was superb. The story line was not the best, but the gameplay is so unique it makes you want to replay the game over and over. I wanted this game because I loved the challenge of fighting massive bosses that took up the entire stage. Throughout the game you must fight a Minotaur, Frog, and other bosses. My favorite was a bird-like creature. I vividly recalling having to jump on top of the bird and climbing across its wing span as it soared through the air. The graphics and special effects were simply phenomenal. All the bosses are long, epic fights which test you tenacity, patience, and skills. If you fall off you will likely die. The only downside to this game is that the game was huge and there could have been RPG elements to it where items could have been obtained or power ups. I also wish some of the bosses were tough. once you climb on top of the boss, it is pretty much a done deal.

Great game overall.
