The game itself is very fun but the only thing that brings it down is a lack of story. the imagery as well as battles are absolutely stunning, but i wish i knew more about whats going on, maybe it would drive me to finish the game.
epic at large!

Here is a beautiful looking game that really starts to feel empty after a while.... until you meet the colossus! This is a really fun adventure game that isn't too hard and always looks amazing! While playing, I felt like it would have even more fun if, while holding on to a colossus fur with the R1 button, you also had to use the analog stick to swing in the right direction so as not to fall off. I think that and a few other details, like something interesting to explore in the vast environments, will make the sequel to this game even better!
Best looking PS2 Game Ever

Anyone thinking of purchasing this game, please get a big screen tv, the game is just as fun without it, but the breathtaking visuals and unbelievably good soundtrack are much more enveloping when played on a larger screen. There is no equal to the pleasure or sense of enthrallment you get fighting each colossus in any other video game, it really is that good, it would be the best game on PS2 if not for it being kinda short
Incredibly unique and very awesome

Never seen a game like this and I probably never will again. Just boss fights, it's like it's made for people who hate the constant shoot em up games where you just kill tons of mindless enemiees then get killed by some stupid boss. You start to feel guilty about killing the colossi just because of their beauty. The camera is a little funky. And when Samurai Elias is talking about ten hours for first quest he is lying through his teeth. I bought it took it home goofed around with controls for five minutes then went on to killing the first colossi in under fifteen minutes. It only took that long because of all the jumping involved with getting to the first colossus, Definitely recommend forANYONE. Great game. Lil challenging at times. Nothing you can't figure out w/o the Cheat Planet Strategy guide

This game was I would have to say one of the best games i've ever played and I can say that I play A LOT of games but yeah this is a super good game. This game is quite fun but just remember FOLLOW THE THE SWORDS LIGHT because it leads you to the collosuses the bosses are fun and sometimes hard to figure out. They put so much efort into makeing this game I mean the collosuses movement is just so real if people say this game stinks they are luniticks and crazy whacked phychos (just kidding)I had to look up were the collosuses were because I didn't know that the light guided you. The horse is cool but don't get attached to it because he doesn't do much but he is cool. I admit the story needs help and they should add like mini collosuses runing around or something to fight. I say rent it if you don't want to do the time attack on hard mode because otherwise you just beat it in a day or 2 but doing time attack can earn you items but you have to be the game first to do the time attack. The music was good but they don't have much of it. Great Job makers of this game:).
An epic, grand gaming experience with some shortcomings

This game for me was a mixed bag. The game's soundtrack and ambience were great, as everyone says, and the vast empty world that you run around in, withtout any "minor" enemies, is poetic and beautiful. The developers even took the trouble to create an original language for the game (listen closely to the in-game dialogue), and that lends life and credibility to the world they have created.
It's rare that I get a triumphant sense of accomplishment when I beat a video game boss, but that's exactly what I got every time I beat a Colossus. Sure, some of the Colossi were rather frustrating to figure out, downright infuriating even, but I guess that's the point here: it's you against the world, literally.
Having said that, let me gripe a bit here: I wish they could have designed the main character a bit better. His animations are stiff and robotic, he's less athletic than a couch potato (i.e. me), and his repertoire of moves/abilities is incredibly limited. And speaking of limited: I keep thinking that the hero's horse could have used some tweaking too. The horse fights me too much; it's not the easiest "vehicle" I've controlled in a game.
And let me rant a bit about the visuals. The frame rate is a bit choppy, and I have to admit they made my eyes hurt after playing the game for an hour or more in one sitting. And what is up with the camera? Like my horse, it is constantly fighting me! Whenever I use the right analog stick to move the camera, it tries to automatically re-center itself, and I have to constantly wrestle with it if I want to take a good look at my surroundings. I think they should have given me an option to toggle this re-centering thing on or off. I mean, the game HAS a re-center button, for crying out loud.
But these are minor gripes, really. SOTC's positives far outweigh the negatives, and it's really rare that I actually feel like I'm IN the game. Sony took a chance in making a unique game like this, and I for one am glad for it.

Wow. I haven't even finished this game and I feel compelled to write a review. Other reviewers have just about said it all, but I'll add that the atmospherics in this game are amazing. Standing at the foot of a colossus... the sense of scale is incredible. It's head almost disappears into the mist above. Speaking of mist, this game is a sort of spiritual cousin of Myst. It doesn't play anything like it, but if you think of both as deceptively simple games where atmospheric details make the game worthwhile, then they do have a connection. You can't level up, you can't find an awesome new weapon, you can only fight, ride, learn and enjoy.

The creators of ICO have once again created a beautiful and imersive world. The size and scale of the environment and the sixteen collosi really makes you stop and stare in amazement. The graphics may be the best yet for PS2. No draw-in or slowdown even during some polygon heavy scenes. The technique used to ensure seamless visuals works very well and during intense action, I would argue this technique enhances the graphics. The technique used seems to be a slight blurring of the polygons, or a drop in resolution. For example, as you approach a distant cliff, it appears slightly foggy and almost pre-rendered. As you get closer the higher resolution slowly spreads out over the lower resolution background. During intense action, or even just spinning the camera quickly, the image seems to blur as the resolution drops to avoid any slowdown. I think the effect actually inhances the images. All throughout the graphics and artwork are incredibly well done. The sound is equally impressive as the musical score fades in to support the dramatic battles with the collosi. The score changes throughout the battles and ends with a sorrowful piece as the collosi die that adds a sense of sadness as they fall to the ground. After sitting in awe of the wonderful sights and sounds, the carefully created gameplay takes over with its long, clever battles with each collosus. Having only sixteen boss battles with no smaller battles in between is an excellent idea and works very well with this game. A single battle with a collosus can take an hour while you try to figure out how to bring the giant to the ground. The first playthrough takes between ten and fifteen hours to complete the game. Once fininshed, a time trial and hard mode becomes available. The story is another appealing aspect of Shadow. With little or no background information, you are left curious throughout the entire game and eager to see how it all turns out. I've read other reviews saying that Shadow can't be compared to any other game or genre, but I think Zelda, especially Ocarina of Time, resembles Shadow in many ways. The large envirment travelled over by a young hero on his horse to save a girl by defeating large creaters using sophisticated techniques and aiming for vital points sounds familiar, doesn't it? What really sets Shadow appart is the lack of inbetween battles, streamlined battle system with only two weapons and no items to collect, and most of all, a highly innovative and creative design that cannot be found in any other game except maybe ICO. Overall, Shadow of the Collosus is a work of art and a truly magnificent experience.
