I Wished I Had Played the Game Everyone Else Did

The first thing I noticed was that everyone seemed to love this game. But for me, it was a dull experience. Yes, at first I was amazed at the gorgeous graphics and the interesting concept of puzzle/action, but after about four giants I soon understood that nothing else was going to happen beyond the simple idea of searching out the giants, climbing up them and finding the weak spots, and stabbing a magic sword into those spots in order to bring the beasts down. And though the Colossi were all very different and unique, I quickly grew used to the amazing graphics and even the curiosity of finding out what the next beast would like left me as well.
At first, yes, I did think this game was amazing. Seeing the giants move about and attempt to crush your main character flat had my heart pounding, especially against the first giant, which killed my character. And the landscapes were definitely some of the best I've seen in a video game. Also, the simple game-play made it easy to pick this game up (but more on this later). The horse was an interesting concept, too; when galloping at high speeds, it seemed to add some beauty to the landscape. But great graphics, to me, can't carry a game for long.
The simple game-play also left a lot of wanting on my part. All you had to learn was how to climb, how to use your sword and fire a bow, and learn the basics of exploration. There were no advanced skills to be gained, no combos to be learned, no nothing of anything to ever change the way your character went about his business of killing massive creatures. The simplicity made it easy to get into the game, but it also killed it for me in the end. After doing the same thing only slightly differently seven times in a row, I realized I couldn't do it anymore. It was fun in the beginning, but boring in the middle, and had I kept playing, I'm sure my rating would've gotten much lower by the end.
Now, how do I recommend this game? Well, firstly, if you enjoyed Ico, a puzzle game made by the same people who made Shadow of the Colossus, then you'll definitely like this game, as it's basically a lot of the same concepts only with giants. Also, if you enjoy great graphics and don't really need super interactive game-play (like what's found in puzzle games but not action games) then you would also find some enjoyment out of this, I think. The problem is, there just aren't many games to compare this too, so it makes it difficult to recommend. All I can say is rent it, try it, and if the novelty doesn't wear away, then you'll probably love this game.
Harder then it looks

This is a beautifully rendered game ripe with vast landscapes and scattered ruins of lost civilizations. However, one will immediately notice the lack of any other character (except the horse) with which the hero can interact. Where is everyone?! Each level is VERY redundant; ride your horse (who never goes where or does what you want him to in the first place) to the location of the Colossus, climb the Colossus, find its weak point and stab it until it dies. Aside from this, the main reason I'm writing this critique is the fact that the controls of this game can be described in one word: Awful. The controls are so cumbersome that I feel as though I'm driving a tank, let alone a 150 lb. character. I'm not even going to mention the time it takes to control the faithful horse. You will find that the difficulty of the game is not in the gameplay, itself, but with fighting with the controls which severely deters from enjoying the game. I have to give 'Shadow of the Colossus' a `3 out of 5`.
Aesthetically and aurally pleasing, but....

I went to the video game store several times hedging on whether or not to buy the game. All the clerks RAVED about this game. One said, "If I were stranded on a desert island with only one game to play, this is it!" High praise for any game. I took the chance, but now I'm not sure it was the right decision. Like so many movies, when something is so hyped, it's hard for that something to live up to the expectation.
I am one who wants it all from my game. I want the visually stunning graphics, the masterful score, and the in-depth gameplay. They say that, "two outta three ain't bad," but in this case...
The graphics are amazing in the game. The soundtrack is what I would expect from the Japanese master-gamers. But while so many other reviewers praise the fact that there are no side-tasks to get in the way, I WANT THE SIDE TASKS!! Side-tasks would add more depth to this game. The premise of the game boils down to "find it,kill it, find its brother, and kill him, too." It almost feels incomplete. It's just not enough for me.
If I were stranded on a desert island, this game would only drive home the sheer monotony of my tropical existence.
Extremely difficult - more frustrating then fun

I tried to change my rating to 1 star but Amazon won't let me. What sucks about this game is that I have been looking forward to playing it for quite awhile after reading most of the reviews on Amazon. It is extremely beautiful and if you are playing this with the lights down, on a big tv and with the volume cranked, you will become really drawn into it's world. HOWEVER. The only problem I have with it is that it is UTTERLY IMPOSSIBLE to play at any one sitting for less then an hour. Riding around and looking for the next mythical-like beast/creature/thing to kill isn't that hard or boring (the scenery is amazing) but when you find the creature it can easily take 45 minuets to an hour to kill, and repeat. We got as far as I think the #7 beast and after hours of trying to get our sword to lock on the tiny target area by the horns we gave up and sold the game to a used game place. At first I thought I was just not figuring the different beast out but when my partner tried the game he found the same problem. That being said, it should be understood that sometimes these colossi are EXTREMELY difficult to kill and the process ends up being not so much fun and challenging but more of shear frustration and anger. I for one, do not like spending 40-minuets to over an hour trying to kill a boss and then just switching off the PS2 because it's time for bed and who knows how much longer it's going to take to finish it off. If there were more "save game" options it would be more tolerable but it's either play for an hour or don't play at all. So, that being said, it's certainly worth renting, I wouldn't buy it again.
A dismal abomination of a game...

I too got suckered into purchasing one of the worst PS2 games I have ever seen. Anyone who confesses too enjoy playing this dreadful nightmare is probably a close personal friend of the developer and wants to date his sister. The graphics are bland and lifeless. The gameplay is unintelligent and boring. I can hopefully resell this POS and let someone else place this one on the "Shelf of SHAME".

I see all these reviews about how great this game is and yes it is innovative and the game play is pretty good but....the control is "clunky" and for the people who think these graphics are gorgeous, they really need to purchase a gamecube or either of microsofts game systems. While sony isnt known for killer graphics (God Of War = Good Graphics) this game looks very dated.
Fun, but sad

As OPM said, taking down a Colossus is exhilarating, but once you kill it, and the dramatics, I feel like an awful person. Aside from that the parts wher you have to reach the Colossi, and when you try to figure them out can get very tedious. Overall, this game is a really artistic, different, cool effects, dramatcic, odd and sad with some minor setbacks and 1 major, but still an experience you should take.
