When I heard that BioShock was set in the sixties, I almost passed on it. I've grown used to futuristic shooter games with plasma weapons, spaceships, and aliens. However, I read the reviews and they were unbelievably glowing, so I decided to try it.
After playing through the game, I had to provide a review. This game is simply an essential purchase if you enjoy first-person shooters. Everything from the story to the gameplay to the ending is well-thought out, and every element of the game contributes to the experience. Great sound, great voice acting, varied gameplay that invites replay, a forgiving death and save system, surprises around every corner, and of course, stunning graphics. Water is everywhere, and it looks phenomenal.
I experienced no technical problems with the game, and it ran perfectly on my PC. This is the kind of game that results when people care about what they do, are given time enough to do the job right, and create a game with the player in mind. This kind of excellent effort earns future patronage; I would by a game from this studio just on the strength of this effort alone.
I haven't gone into the plot or the specifics of gameplay, because you can find that info elsewhere. I just wanted to weigh in on what was a phenomenal gaming experience.

Great game, very well done, reminded me of halflife for about 2 seconds, but it beats the hell out of halflife, curios to see how it mods, I think it uses the unreal engine, so naturally it should have Unreal Edit.
Ran it at Max Settings with DX9, I'm not about to upgrade to vista any time soon.
everything on High, 1600x1200 I didn't check the FPS but it looked perfect to me, ran very smoothly
Windows XP SP2
AMD X2 4000 2.1Ghz
2 Gigs DDR2 Ram
NVidia 8600 256
NOTE: I don't plan to and have never played this Multiplayer great for Single Player, if you don't rush you could spend a good bit of time playing though this, but you could probably beat it in 16 hours or so if you really rushed it

+ Good story quality.
+ Very good graphics (beautiful water effects if you're using newest gen GPU).
+ Deep atmosphere.
- Forces you to install copy protection SecuROM and to activate the game online - creates unpleasant installation limitations.
- Problematic game stability: The game crashes on rare occasions, the framerate reaches 1-.7fps at certain points but is totally smooth otherwise, and some users have reported total loss of audio.
- It would have been advantageous to cut the game length by 30% by removing the most annoying and boring parts (to preserve high overall game quality).
- It would have been advantageous to remove the manual saving feature from the game (to avoid excessive reloads and increase the much criticized low difficulty of the game, thus improving general gaming experience).
Well designed and very enjoyable to play

I really enjoyed this game and given that I usually hate console ports that's saying a lot. It works well on the PC and does not have that 'consoleness' feel to it that other multi-platform games can have.
The main reason why I purchased this game was because it does NOT have any multi player meaning all development effort was put in to creating a solid single player experience and story, which was a welcome change from most games these days that all focus on multi player with the single player feeling really 'tacked on' if one even exists.
The online activation was no trouble at all for me and I understand why 2K games felt they needed to do this.
The concept for the game was great - an under water city created in the 1940s which has a really art-deco feel and is now full of zombie type inhabitants because of some weird science at that first seemed great but turned in to a real curse.
As well as a good assortment of weapons that you can upgrade, and different ammo types for these weapons that are more effective against different types of enemies, you get a number of special powers that come in really handy and are fun to use, for example the lightning one which you can not only use to stun / electrocute enemies but also use to disable machines allowing you to then hack them.
Speaking about hacking, the way you hack things like the vending machines, security bots, and turrets is really cool. For those of you old enough to remember the old windows game Pipe Dream its basically that - connect up bits of pipe from the start point to the end point and if the flow successfully gets to the end then you have hacked the machine and it becomes friendly towards you and will attack enemies or in the case of vending machines sell you stuff for a cheaper price.
This has definitely been a well thought out game and not just a "dumb shooter" like some FPS can be because as well as shooting at stuff you actually have to use your brain to think about what powers you are going to equip, types of ammo you need to best defeat something, and just generally how you are going to go about accomplishing your goals.
Also there has been a real attention to detail, the environment is very lush, the AI and personality of the characters is great, and you have some choices throughout the game such as if you are gong to harvest these little girls or save them.
If you you have been waiting for a great single player game with an adventure / first person shooter mix then you should not be disappointed with Bioshock.
Fun, different, quirky

Not a typical shoot 'em up, really liked the quirky back story that was slowly revealed throughout play. You have different paths you can go down, so you can end up with a different story. It won't be my favorite game, but it is certainly an unusual and fun game to play through. Bought it used, so didn't pay list price. Graphics are quite good with a high end card and lots of RAM. Sound is great. A well designed game.

Before I get into game play, I wanted to note, as others have that the game does install a rootkit onto your system. This is to check the number of activations you have done. People have noted that this is limited to 2, but if you check out the forums there is buzz about it also keeping into consideration uninstalls (so perhaps two at a time?). Finally, it sounds like they may change the system to allow for potential five concurrent installs, and five 'abandoned' or never uninstall reports. If you're considering this title you may want to research the most up to date facts about installation and issues. To avoid many of the installation headaches I actually decided to get Bioshock from the Steam service at www.steampowered.com.
The game itself so far has been a rather mixed array of gaming elements. Part RPG, part FPS, part strategy and part Pokemon Snap. I played through on medium difficulty and roughly 1/3rd of the way in I was comfortable enough with the mechanics and gameplay that I was no longer taking advantage of the free resurrections. While in hard there is still the same mechanic that allows you to resurrect with essentially no penalty, this does not mean that you will have an easy time with the game as I would estimate that enemies are easily two to three times more difficult. The beginning of the game in hard difficulty is much harder due to the necessity to fully utilize your resources.
As you progress through the game, it really opens up to allow players to more fully chose how they would like to approach the game. It certainly allows you to go ahead 'guns a blazing' to push through the game, but those of you who are more patient and tenacious will find many rewards. Taking your time in zones to find every nook and cranny, photograph every enemy and pick up every piece of 'junk' will find themselves with much more resources, more plasmid options and higher damage output in the long run.
This game is quite pretty and is definitely leading the pack with games being released this year. I wouldn't say any of the models have superior detail, but the artistic direction and setting are cohesive and nothing looks out of place. A year from now this game will still look good, two or three years from now it may start to show a few rough edges but I am sure it will still be great to play.
Anyone familiar with System Shock, Thief or Deus Ex will be right at home here. In fact, if you haven't played any of those games I would highly suggest giving them a chance. I wouldn't say that any of them have graphically aged well, but I know that there are mods for System Shock at least to bring the graphics up a bit.
So for anyone with the system requirements to handle this game, I would give it a serious two thumbs up. If you've got an xbox 360 the game seems very comparable. If you need a system upgrade and don't have an xbox 360 I don't envy the decision you'll have to make if you really want to play this game, but I would say either way is definitely worth it.
Here's to waiting for an expansion pack for this game... Cheers!

This game is very unique and intriguing to play, its one of those games that takes alot of imagination to play. This game plays great on my system so idk what the other pc players are having but they possibly didn't realize that you need the latest display drivers and the same time the game came out they became available. Bottom line keep your pc up to date and turn down eye candy if you don't have the required pc. I use to play consoles years ago but decided to put my money in one area(pc) and not both being I use the pc for many other things. Here are my specs that the game is played GREAT on.
Asus A8N-Deluxe skt939
AMD X2 4600
8800GTX
2GBDDR2 RAM
Audigy 4
Vista Ultimate 64BIT
Everything updated including DX10

I installed this on a Vista system with 3 gig of memory and had no problems.
When I think of the B/S associated with the steam/valve system of game play this is a dream. I bought half life 2, changed ISP (and email address) and can't use my own software any more due to steam and it's draconian paranoia.
My only complaint was it caused me to buy an Nvidia 880 GTS video card to fully appreciate the incredible graphics :-)
Once you finish you'll notice there are 3 potential endings, leaving you the opportunity to go back and play it all again. Nice touch that.

This is absolutely the best game that I have ever played. I have been playing video games since the days of "Pac-Man" and continue to enjoy them to this day. I own or have owned almost every PC Game that has been released and I can tell you that this is the game that every other game should try to imitate.
I must admit, it was a shaky start when I first tried to install it. It seems that my computer would not load it and would freeze when I attempted to play it. I run XP and an Nvidia 7800 GTX and have not had any problem with it since I first installed it.
If you like first person shooters like I do - then this game gives you more than you thought could be possible. My hats off to 2K for a well developed game.
