Suffers a bit from overhype. a 360 port they should have worked on a bit longer to stabilize. The look is wonderful, it's soul is missing.. No real new gameplay is offered as you roam around using your magic powers in what may as well be Doom3 levels with a different paintjob.. Lack of enemy varieties and weapon balance is bad, You can wrench your way through the whole game if you want and get resurrected without penalty over and over again.. Any traces of the RPG qualities it's successor SShock 2 had are erased so a friendlier, linear story can unfold to a bigger audience which is all that mattered. The masses ate this up so expect more steampunk games with spiffy soundtracks and magic powers in the future.. Nearly good, just ok..
what a cool game!

Do not miss out on one of 2007's best games. There is no multiplayer, co-op mode, and it takes a beefy PC to run this game well. Those are the cons to BioShock. The pros are a great storyline, with characters and environments that ooze depth, a customizable arsenal, and the ability to splice your genes to wield electricity, fire, ice and much more against your enemies. The real sandbox aspect comes in the form of choices.
Choices set BioShock apart from many other run-of-the-mill Shooters. Players will frequently be confronted with so many choices it's fortunate the game has a pause button. In any given foe battle, a player can choose whether to set a trap with trip-wires and mines, perhaps turn an automated turret on an enemy, or harness your character's spliced genes to set your enemy ablaze with a snap of the fingers, only to electrocute that foe after he or she dives into a pool of water. And that is only the beginning of the rabbit hole of choices.
I am running BioShock on a 2006 factory Dell machine with minor RAM and video card upgrades. My single 2.2Ghz AMD processor, 1.5 GB RAM, and my GeForce 7600GT (256MB) graphics card run BioShock, on the highest settings, quite adequately with minor dips in frame rate. With my PC falling well under the $1,000 mark, don't let skeptical gamers tell you that BioShock demands a monster PC.
If you're a shooter fan who loves eerie environments, non-stop, non-linear, shooting action (with VERY limited need for backtracking), and creepy, retro Art-Deco interior design-- BioShock is for you. The replay value is better than most shooters and FINALLY voice acting is superb. If it wasn't for Call of Duty 4, I would easily give BioShock my game of the year nomination.
At BioShock's current lowered retail price you'd be "Atlas Shrugging" off a can't miss game.
Game Of The Year- this is what a game should be.

One of the best games in years. Good to great on nearly every level. Story looks and game play. It involves you. Unlike the normal game where you are simply shooting everything in site you are discovering a new wonderful and at the same time horrible world. You can see what the people once were before the fall and and you get a all to rare relief from the normal shoot reload and shoot. Not that the normal FPS is not fun but here you can see so much more. It is going to be a game that nearly all other computer made after this get compared to like it or not. It is that good. This game would normaly be " not my kind of game" But it won me over anyway and then some.
There are very few game review sites that have less than a 9/10 rating for this game. This is an achievement by itself. HL2 and Doom3 did not do this. . Just about everything was done well it runs smoothly, even with all the eye candy, from beginning to end. There is not one thing that stands out but the way it all comes together smoothly is unheard of. It is very immersive. It might not make it to the total GOTY with the stiff competition but I am sure it will make many lists even if they need to create a new category to let it win. Looks better than FEAR and Far Cry even without a killer system as long as it meeds the minimum.
Cons: It ends.
Other: You will need a video card that supports SM3.0 older cards like the ATI 9600 x800 series use SM2 so wont work. Some people are upset that it requires you to go on line for copyright protection(DRM) but no one has had issues after the first few days when 2k's customer service and their server was overwhelmed by the response.

Great game, I am running it on my system with a 939 Athlon 64 3000+ (stock speed), 2 GB of DDR (underclocked to 333MHz Bus) and a 256MB 7800 GTX (stock speeds) on an nF4 SLI motherboard. I am more than happy with how this game performs. It did take me a couple hours to figure out that I needed to uninstall my video card drivers and reinstall them to fix an issue with no mouse cursor showing and black screen in game. After 8 hours of play, I only experienced one crash - a problem between the game and the video card drivers. Make sure you have a Video Card with Shader Model 3.0 support.
To all you anti-DRM, anti-rootkit people:
This is Windows - what do you expect? I didn't notice any harm with the copy protection they're using. This is a game that people will actually buy if they can't copy it. More money for this game increases the likelyhood of the developers creating another great game or expansion pack. If you're that concerned, reinstall Windows every so often or use something built for security like Linux. I downloaded the game via Steam and had no problems with copy protection.
OK, on to the actual game:
If you like horror/suspense stories, this is the game for you. Definitely a Mature audience only game. The environment is very rich and the enemies say really horrible things to you. It is a lot like HL2, a bit like GTA and a bit like Oblivion. It is the most innovative FPS I have seen in a loooong time. The controls could be better, it was obviously made for the xbox 360.
If you don't know how to install a game or install drivers, don't get this game for the PC. If you want a multiplayer or run-of-the-mill FPS, don't get this game.
If you want an innovative game with a lot of WOW factor that will immerse you for hours BUY THIS GAME!

Amazing.. absolutely bloody fantastic. I've been waiting for this game since March of '06 and has blown away my every expectation, even after reading every review and watching every video clip on it, it's just unbelievable.
Definately requires a HIGH end PC to thoroughly enjoy its splendid detail, but every last pixel of this game is eye candy.
Best gameplay in a first person shooter
Best storyline in a first person shooter
Best graphics to date in a first person shooter
I can't even begin to elucidate how overly impressed I am with this product.
If you have the hardware to support it, definately get it for the PC, not 360... it's the only way to to fully grasp all that this game has to offer

Basically, this game does not work on most video cards (at least for the PC version). If you have an ATI card over a year old...don't waste your money on this game...it won't play on your system.
2K Games should have advertised IN BIG LETTERS that this game requires an SM 3.0 card instead of just putting it in the last minute README file.
If 2K were smart, they'd pull the game...
Anyway, wait a few months...this one will be in the $5 bin soon enough

BIOSHOCK!
I was not that interested in this game initially as I thought I would have to get a directX10 card and therefore Vista to enjoy it. But after the demo came out and I found I could play it under DirectX9 in XP with stellar effects it was must own for me.
I installed under Windows XP with no hiccups at all and was to venture into the depths of Rapture within a few mins. The world is astonoshing, and the in game voice acting is amaazing! The water effects even on my nVidia 6800 look great! Of course I had to tweak resolutions, effects etc to get the best balance of quality with frame rate but this is why I play PCgames over consoles...customization.
The gameplay is quite fun. Actually it plays alot like Jedi Knight, which is a good thing. The use of force like plasmids make the main character a juggernaut in a fire fight. Though the environments, music, voices are creepy you feel a little sorry for the freaks of Rapture due to your amazing Jedi like powers.
The story is great and really had me coming back for more. The moral decision points in the game had me thinking unlike any game before. The in-game characters in Rapture seem real. They have motivations, and reasons to do what they are doing. It is really quite remarkable. I found myself just sitting back and watching the characters interact which each other, which I never do in an FPS.
Best Experience in Game: Plasmids, Hacking, Moral decisions, BIG DADDIES!!
The only negative I can say is that the characters up close do look a little weak in the modeling department. This could be due to my lower end graphics card, but really this is a minor thing.
Buy this game. Play this game. This is a milestone much like Half Life was in its day. You will always remember your adventue into Rapture!
Outstanding.

Plain and simple: If your machine meets the technical specifications, (and I do recommend doing some research to make sure) then this is an amazing shooter/adventure. The visuals, control, voice-acting/music and story are all simply amazing. I bought this title and installed with absolutely zero setbacks, even though I have Daemon Tools, AVG anti-virus, and various programs installed. Even if you do end up with less luck than what I had, having to work for a few minutes to get Bioshock working is well worth it.

I just finished Bioshock and what can I say Bravo! 2K did a beautiful job of pulling together a wonderfully atmospheric game. There are quibbles such as the "Hacking" puzzle redundancy, but the advantage is that at least you know whats coming at you so it's actually an advantage. The gene upgrades could show a bit more diversity and innovation, but they work. While the plot isn't overly deep, there are a few nice twists. Yes as "Zero Punctuation" puts it it's like system shock meets Ayn Rand- but I think in a great way. As far as game play, There is there no strategic element, though tactics are required when fighting.
Importantly, this is a game that "Gets" that there are a growing number of gamers out there in their thirties, forties and on up who aren't looking for twitch gaming with impossible boss fights that require an exact 728 button sequence done at the speed of a nervous Chihuahua in a crack seizure to over come.
If you'd like a great game with wonderful atmosphere- head on over to Rapture.
