bad controls

don't buy this game. you'll get halfway through it, wonder why it's getting such bad reviews then when it get's a bit more difficult you'll go crazy. as the game progresses the controls get more and more important. the high difficulty to perform necessary maneuvers kills it. it's a beautiful looking and sounding game, it's playability is horrendous after the first several levels.

Missing something.....

I purchased this game with Warhawk expecting this game to leave Warhawk in the background. To my suprise the results are reversed. That being said I must say that this game is not as bad as some of the reviews that were left. Honestly the game's concept is very cool, there were just few things that really got on my nerves. First, the dialog in the game is very very corney almost intended for a young player which was wierd after seeing the trailer for it and percieved it as a very intense adult targeted game. The next thing is that it is fairly slow paced. The dragon does not have the ability to turn on a dime, and flys relatively slow.
Pros
Great Graphics
Great Sound (dispite the dialoge)
Very unique controls
Ground Breaking concept

Cons
Cheesy Dialog
A little boring if not in a tightly enclosed battle area
Would have been better with a Mature rating

Rent this one......

The best ps3 game I own - A technological tour de force.

Yes, I too had this game pre-ordered for a long time. I am thirty something, and have not developed the lust for the "left-thumb-controls-the-universe-through-a-single-tiny-control" mentality of the acnefied majority of the game players, and really enjoy the easy, intuitive, fun control of this game! Of course, my 3,000 Watt 7.1 setup, my 1080p projector and 160" inch screen help a lot too. Definitely a game to show off your system, and a lot of fun. But if you are 13 years old, and need to run around in a virtual fake world, then maybe this won't work for you. My wife and I love this one. Definitely big thumbs up here, despite the glitches.

everyone sums it up already - I'll get to the point

Larger learning curve = bad reviews. In an age of FPS this game is outside the box, finesse vs button mashing. Once you get the controls down Lair can be a lot of fun. I had preordered this game and despite the bad reviews I didn't cancel my order and I'm glad I didn't.

Nothing like landing in the middle of a huge enemy army while burning, biting and battering them to death. Good stress reliever.

Fire the people who made this mess!!! Even with the patch!!!

Ok I read all of the reviews about how bad this game was and chose to not buy it until last week when I found out the patch was coming out to fix the infamously bad controls for the game. I downloaded the game and began playing. Cool graphics, nice soundtrack, basic story...........then the gameplay.........drum roll............what the !$%#@%!$!!??? How could a game this pretty suck so bad even after the stupid patch???? I switched over to the old controls and what do you know? It still sucks? Your dragon turns like the Exxon Valdeez (super slow), the controls are terrible, and you spend most of the game trying to get the targeting system to pick the right enemy.
Soooooo, if you want a pretty game to watch and don't mind that you can't aim or progress in the game without much repeating then go ahead and give it a try. Otherwise wait for something better. This game goes down in flames!!!

Lots of Fun!!! All of my friends have really enjoyed the controls!

The gamestore told me not to buy Lair because the controls suck. I bought it anyways and was prepaired to have to return it. The game controls, graphics etc became an instant favorite however. If you don't want to play "wii" like controls then buy a different game and leave the ratings to this one alone. If you don't mind it then have fun!

Really fun game

I'm glad I ignored some of the negative reviews and purchased this game. Great graphics, stirring music, and simply a lot of fun to play. You need to spend a little time practicing, and of course you need to learn what the motion sensing controller does (neither of which takes all that long), but once you've done this, you really feel like you're flying a dragon and working as a team to defend your people and lands. Recommended.

Great potential which is ultimately squandered

This longs to be epic. From the top-notch graphics to the grand orchestral score you will see potential in this title. Unfortunately, the promises made by the well-executed elements are offset by some core problematic issues.

Pre-patch control:

The SIXAXIS controls... What can be said that hasn't been said before. They are terrible. Your success rate using the controller will tend to hover around 50%. Sometimes the dragon will respond to your input and sometimes it won't. The action to make the dragon turn around, which requires you to pitch the controller up and toward your body, typically fails to cause any sort of reaction in the character. The "takedown" sequences use real-time events (a la God of War) but instead of pressing buttons you will move the controller itself. Again, this doesn't always provide the desired response. Often, it feels as if you are either moving the controller too much or too little. Ultimately, you will find it doesn't matter as all the various ways you attempt to use the motion controls will provide sloppy and unreliable control.

Post-patch control:

The SIXAXIS banishment patch could have fixed all the above problems but instead simply puts a band aid on them instead. Using the analog stick the dragon has the grace of a flying Mack truck. The controls seem delayed and your dragon never seems quite as agile as you'd like it to be. You will still need to employ the previously mentioned motion controls during "takedown" scenes, unfortunately.

Other problems:

The game runs at a proper 1080p resolution unlike so many of the Xbox 360 PS3 ports which clutter the library. It all looks wonderful until the frame rate drops below 10 FPS. This makes the dragon, which is already a handful, even more of a chore to pilot. Would I notice the difference between 10,000 troops on the field or 5,000? Probably not. Do I notice the difference between 30 FPS and 10 FPS? Absolutely. Factor 5 disagrees with my assessment and thusly the frame rate will chug when too many units are displayed on the screen.

Another issue in the game both before and after the patch is the poorly implemented auto-targeting. It is often difficult to discern what you are currently targeting. Sometimes you will see a halo around unit selected and sometimes you won't. The game will choose what you are going to target and many times it gets it completely wrong. Want to take a bomb off the back of a Manta? Tough, you're targeting an enemy dragon instead. Need to destroy that objective right in front of you? Nope, you'll get something else. The game degrades into an exercise in trial-and-error.

The bottom line:

Lair is a great concept with terrible execution. The game will always be shackled with the legacy of a bad control scheme. No patch will be able to heal the issues which plague this game.

yes it is awsome game

Not only the fact of not having a way to calibrate the six axis controller you don't even have the option to turn it off. Though the graffix's are awesome the level of in enjoyment is that of the commercial for Halo III. yelling at the game for its complete lack of response. It is a easy game, childish and I expected so much more. even though I am excited for many of the up coming games this game made me want to PUCK for the dollar amount that Playstation asked for this long awaited BluRay spectical. That's all it is. Buy it thought because this is what Playstation is using to stage it future souly on different options for people they believe can not find a use for more buttons. Thanks 273 words per minute with need of spell check. If I could tell Playstation my opinion it would be "like games before it, the six axis is cool as an option not the standard." If you enjoyed the game blazing angels like I have, "A LOT OF FUN WITH THE SIX AX" easy gliding turns and even frustration. Compare that to riding a draqon bouncing all around when you lay back for a good gaming experience. Control is like getting a train off the tracks and expecting it to do something. Hear is to Playstation and their effort for realism "TURD" Let's see them go with that for a standard.
