Plain and simple, a phenomenal title. The graphics may not be as phenomenal as other titles but they are still quite good and the atmosphere of the game is nailed perfectly. To paraphrase the great Sid Meier: "It's the gameplay, not the graphics, that make great games". That's an apt description of Mercenaries. This is a game that has the gameplay aspect nailed perfectly. It is simply the best game of current "new" titles that are out, and (to use the tired old cliche) one of the best ever for the PS2. Earns a spot of honor on my shelf, right up there with Kingdom Hearts, the Ratchet & Clank series, Need for Speed Underground 2, Spiderman 2, Burnout 3, and the Lord of the Rings series(Both The Two Towers and The Return of the King).

And unlike other "free-roaming environment" games that are out there, I can play this when my kid is awake and not have to cover her ears or eyes.

This game has the best graphics (next to Halo and some other games) that i have ever seen. Me, I like to blow things up and have a stress reliever at the same time. I also like chalenges which make this game better. If you like to blow things up, see different places, and experience really cool gameplay, this game is definately for you. This game let's you choose your style of gameplay, whether it is stealth or full-on destruction, which makes this game one of the best games in the PS2 world.

Good fun but lack of depth becomes apparent.

Fun and frustrating, as one reviewer put it, is the absolute truth. Going off in your own direction is indeed fun but everything you encounter is scripted and set in stone. The freedom is only half-real.
I can't bring myself to play this game anymore because it has gotten boring. With all the things I'm supposed to be able to do, the frustrating elements and lack of variety turned me off for good. The only thing that changes when you are capturing/killing enemies is the scenery. Even that isn't very good. The animations are a little stiff and the level of control you have over your character is pathetic (move and shoot is the extent of it).
The whole production just feels somewhat lacklustre although the core fun factor is definately there with all the explosions, damage and gunfire. There is also more than enough gametime involved with all the enemies to blindly run after. I only wish it could have packed more substance into it's shallow gameplay.

Next best thing to GTA

If your a teen or preteen and you always wanted the GTA games but your parents would'nt allow because of the violence then you will want this game, it is rated teen so it is like the t version of GTA and you can buy it if your under 18 without a id

This game is definitely representative of the next level of action gaming. The openendedness of the story is unmatched. The graphics are top notch, especially the particle effects in the smoke and haze. The draw distance is a little short though, but the mountainous terrain of the "North Korea" of the game negates that through most of the action. The physics in the game are a little weird, but for every time they are distracting there will be a hundred instances of how they make the action more exciting. I think the best aspect of the game is that it is not a puzzle game. There are only a couple situations where there is only one or two ways to do something. The rest of the time the means of mission accomplishment are not determined by a string of predetermined "checks in boxes" GTA-style but rather by the player's ingenuity in the game.

This Game is AWESOME!

Dear Amazon,
I wrote 2 reviews about Mercenaries playground of destruction for PS2 on August 9. When I sent my first one, I realized I wanted to change it. So I wrote a second one and sent it. Can you please delete the first one on top? I want to keep the second one. By the way the title is called The best Freakin game ever. Thank you!

I got this game only a couple of days ago and i love it. Hijack anything you want including helicopters!! Shooting is awesome, i love it!!

Mercenaries is good. But that's it, really. It gets really repetitive, really fast. The formula is "kill/apprehend this guy, do it again." Shooting is extremely basic, with main controls being shoot and jump. Its cool that the game is big and open, with lots of vehicles, but it just seems like a lesser version of the popular Grand Theft Auto series. There really isn't anything fun to do inside the vehicles, except drive around. The game gets stale pretty quickly because its so repetitive and seemingly purposeless.

The graphics are average at best. It has that trademark bland, jagged PS2 look with low resolution and low framerate. The colors aren't vibrant at all, but rather dull and muddy. Also, animations look artificial, like they belong in the N64 era. Music is great, but recording quality is pretty bad, resulting in a muffled kind of sound.

Overall, this is a definite rental game. Give it a try if you're curious, but don't buy it right away.

i think this game is really cool. why it is cool is because you can blow up buildings,vehichles,and pretty much everything else in the game. ok here are some posotive things about this game.
posotive things:

1.It has a realy good story
2.gameplay is kinda like Star Wars Battlefront
3.alot of weapons
4.kinda like gta cause u can steal cars and different kinda vehichles
5.this game is pretty challenging at times

one of the hard levels is when you have to take the helecopter and you have to take it a long way across the map to pick up crates with the magnet that comes out the bottom of the helecopter and then the part that really makes me mad is when the guys shoot you down.

Another hard level is when you gotta take a car to a train station and there is so many enemies there that i died in like a few minutes or maybe thats just because im bad at it.

Just because some levels are hard and it takes you a few tries to get it just right i guess thats where this game truly shines with all the big wars the blowing up buildings and the free roaming its really awsome and lucus arts did a really good job on MERCENARIES i reccomend MERCENARIES to any one that likes star wars battlefront and other war games and i really reccomend this game to anyone that gets really mad and wants to take there anger out on blowing up stuff and just go through and kill everyone including the civillians.:)muhahaahahah

i guess theres no negative things about MERCENARIES so ill tell you if i can find any.
