ilove this game cause i can capture they deck of 52.this game is like GTA almost except you can use your powers for good.(i.e. stopping The North Koreans) the variety is awaome like you can allied with South Koreans and become enemies against say... Russian Muffia. You can also buy stuff and its delivered right to you.Plus the price $45 and the Teen rating with the price still going down this is a fun game. It has a replay value too because you can ride around and accept or not accept contracts thus making your experience last longer. I highly recomend this game.(srry about writting and grammar mistakes.)

Fun game, good concept, but a tad repetitive.

This was a game which I had bought some time ago, but due to time constraints, was unable to really get into. The game was recommended to me by a friend, who described the game as a cross between "Star Wars: Battlefront" and the "Grand Theft Auto" series. The character controls are very similar indeed to SW:B, which should come as no surprise since Lucasarts and Pandemic are in on both games.

However, unlike SW:B, Mercenaries allows you to free-roam throughout the game's world, rather than being shackled to linear missions. That's where the similarity to the GTA series comes into play. Like GTA, you can accept missions from various interested parties, and if completed successfully, will result in monetary gain. ALso like GTA, you can hijack any vehicle, kill any person (enemy or not) blow up most buildings, and use any weapon, from small arms up to artillery pieces. If the stringent demands of a directed mission is not your speed, you can just roam about the countryside, hijacking and killing at your leisure - you won't make big bucks, but if you destroy any North Korean vehicle or building, you get a bonus.

The main mission storyline revolves around a "Deck of 52", shamelessly patterned after the real-life Deck of 52 which the Bush Administration used in Iraq for various wanted people. The lowest ranking person on the deck is the 2 of Clubs, the highest is the Ace of Spades, which in this pseudo world is a General Song, a ruthless North Korean who usurped power in a coup and is threatening the world with nuclear arms. Most of the structured missions revolve around capturing or killing a deck of 52 person.

However, there are many side missions to earn extra cash, things as simple as getting to a certain destination in a given amount of time, to shuttling food to a needy city, to taking a reporter to film war footage, and a lot of others.

The biggest dissimilarity from GTA (and which I liked for its realism) was that you could only carry a limited amount of ammunition and arms. In GTA, you could literally carry a dozen weapons and enough ammo for each to supply a battalion. Not so in Mercenaries, where you were limited to two shoulder weapons and only a relative handful of explosives. However, you can call in artillery and air strikes (for a fee) and also call for medevac extraction when things got too hot.

The things I really didn't like, however, were the player's limited combat abilities. Unlike the Metal Gear series or Splinter Cell series, your character's movement profile is robotic and mechanical. There's no option for crawling around and stealthily putting yourself in a position to kill or take down an enemy silently. Instead, you can only crouch and move slowly, but not crawl, and there's no provision for wearing disguises. So on a lot of missions, I found that the most effective method for reducing an enemy position was to simply run in close and hose them with the carbine - totally unrealistic, and very GTA-like.

Actually, you can "disguise" yourself by driving a vehicle belonging to any of the various factions, but there's no provision for say, wearing the uniform of a different faction for an infiltration mission. In this aspect, I felt that this game could have really done more.

Still, all in all, it's a fun and addicting game, but unfortunately, even as you capture more and more of the deck of 52, the storyline remains pretty unchanged. Again, more could have been done with this, as war is very fluid and changes things dramatically, and this could have been worked into the game progression, but this unfortunately is lacking.

go buy this game just stop reading this review and buy it... NOW

This game is fun to the heart. The explosions are hard core and I just love the team system. u can be allies or enemies
with 4 teams. There are 3 playable characters. u can hijack all vehicles except 1 of the helicopters. by now you are probably wondering why I didn't give this game 5 out of 5 overall. It does have good music, great game play and average graphics. The thing I don't like about this game is the ad is a fraud. It says all vehicles can be hijacked, but you can actually hijack all but one of the helicopters. What's really bad is they took the Grand Theft Auto free roam concept and covered it with a war concept. Although I haven't actually played Grand Theft Auto, from what I've heard it sounds like this. There's just one thing I would have liked--a multiplayer mode. Now, like I said in the title of this review, Go Buy This Game!

AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!

I usually don't write a review for anything I buy, but I really think people should know about this game. It's so fun and realistic; I feel like I'm actually there! I love the sound of the bullets whizing by your head! At first, it was kind of strange getting used to the controls, but I guess you could say that about any game.

One reviewer said the vehicles weren't particularly fun to drive, but Hello! Have you driven the tank into an enemy camp?! It's like you're invincible (except to rare heavy artillery). Everyone shoots and you just run them over!

I like how AI is actually INTELLIGENT, unlike some games. When you shoot at them, with a gun or a tank missile or whatever, they actually MOVE out of the way and they don't just stand there like idiots, so that makes for a bit of a challenge.

The weapons selection is kind of meager, I admit, but that's only one tiny flaw in a really GREAT game. Your primary weapon should be the standard AK-47. All of your enemies carry those guns, so ammo is EASY to find.

I like how you can blow up anything. One of my favorite things is the laser-guided airstrikes you can call in at any time. That really helps when you're required to blow up some buildings during a contract.

RATINGS:

-Concept: 10/10
-Graphics: 10/10
-Sound: 10/10
-Gameplay: 10/10
-Weapons: 7/10
-Levels: 10/10
Overall: 9.5/10

I highly recommend this game for anyone looking for some fun!

This game is a riot. I didnt even need to play any contract missions to realize how funny it is. The best thing you can possibly do is to get a sniper rifle and shoot the pilot out of a chopper. If it lands right, get in it, and turn on the magnet winch. Pick up cars, then fling them at other objects. Hours of fun, though I do admit it might get dull after a while. Also the Air strike feature is pretty funny, handcuffing someone then calling it in over them.
dont waste your money on a hummer h3 drop. the armor is pathetic, the car is slow, and its just about completely worthless.

HAVE FUN!

Only Lucas Arts game I have played that was good. Actually it is very good.

This game is unlike most of the Lucas star wars games, which I think are intended for those under age 6. This game is fun, and makes you come up with some really creative strategies to win some of the missions.

Ironically, this game is quite fun and makes you want to keep playing it until you get to the point in the game where you can buy the "superweapon", which basically makes you invincible. Unfortunately, at this point the game gets too easy and loses it's challenge and gets boring.

I think the makers from Lucas Arts got some help or advice from Rockstar Games, who seem to have a way of making games alot more realistic and fun than Lucas Arts. This game is similar to GTA though with better controls (especially with weapons) and you can actually blow things up! It has a very good storyline, and there is a real enemy who you feel justified in beating.

Great game.

All around, this game is a wonderfully enjoyable experience and I would highly reccomend it to any console player who enjoys fundamental gaming. To specify:

Graphics: Nothing special, and at times annoying. For a game relatively recently released, it doesn't hold up well with its contemporaries. The building death animation is rather nice, but you would soon tire of it.

Audio: The amatuer graphics and artificial intelligence is backed up by a wonderful musical track and nice sound effects. It's rather amusing to listen to the North Korean propaganda (namesake of my title).

Entertainment: It's entertainment is really on a basic level, but it's a fun game nonetheless. While the levels do noticably though gradually increase in difficulty, an experienced ps2 or xbox player who understands the potential of different means of completion will have an easy enough time finishing the final level without resorting to cheat codes.

The artificial intelligence, however, is intensely frustrating. One of the latter levels, while you're working to escort nuclear inspectors, there are all forms of losing the level, and without previously beting the game and unlocking the carpet bomb to clear the area beforehand or waste a tremendous load of money, it's nearly impossible, not to mention that the inspectors are incredibly stupid. Luckily though, it's not necessary to complete.

You'll also find occassions where you're just taking a vehicle off someone's hands, or have found a roadside battle with the North Koreans and decide to give a hand where soldiers of a friendly faction will fire on you. However, the lack of decent AI can be overlooked easily enough by decent achievements in other areas of this game, and I find it's also worth playing a few more times through after you've captured Choi Song.

Like GTA but in a war zone

This is a surprisingly good game which is set in war-torn North Korea and you can travel wherever you want and do whatever you want. You begin with deciding which character you want to be: an American, British or Swedish mercenary, each with their own advantages when in combat.

You can also choose to side with the Americans, the South Koreans, the Chinese or even the Russian Mafia as you bring in 52 war criminals, finally combating the General of the North Korean army himself.

There are many missions you can choose to do from each faction, but it is hard to keep them all happy. There are also so many weapons and vehicles- from chopper to tank to sports car. This game is very good, but can be very hard in places.

Awesome Game!

I absolutley love this game. The guns are amazing, and the graphics are good. You can play as three different characters and each are awesome. The point of the game is to take out General Song's "Deck of 52". There are other factions like the Russian Mafia(My personal favorite), China, South Korea, and the Allies. They're contracts have nothing to do with the deck of 52 but they usually involve blowwing things up. You get money for destroying things! You can hijack any vehicle, even a helicopter or tank! I love stealing helicopters and blowing up enemies to make extra cash. There's only one thing I have a problem with. The game is incredibly frustrating. I'm up to the Ace of Clubs in the Deck of 52 and it's so hard and I keep dying. Sometimes I feel like smashing the controller. Overall, the game's great!
