Could have been good, but too many bugs / lack of polish

3 Rating: 3, Useful: 5 / 5

I found this game to be fun overall, but it could be much more fun if it wasn't for all the bugs and lack of features. It frequently crashes, sending Windows 2000 to a blue screen. There is also a very annoying "coupler broken" bug that prevents you from finishing many of the activities or running through activities of your own. Also, the editor tools are hopelessly buggy. Typical of Microsoft software, it lacks polish and feels like an early beta version. This game could have been so much more, but falls way short of the target. It could use another 6 months of development time.

Must have for anyone who have past interests on trains

Please don't rate this game if you are not a train lover. This game is not for everyone. The reason I bought this game at the beginning is not that I like trains, just the fact that I love nature, and riding a train through the forest and beside lakes is like a dream to me, I bought this game so I can experience it. Boy, did I make a right choice! The graphics are very realistic, as I drive the Kyushu on the Hisatsu Line through the mountains and lakes, it feels like I'm actually there driving the train. There are many times that I just want to stop the train, look around, feel the breeze and relax (it really clears your mind)... On the other hand, driving in the city is pretty stressful, as it is extremely hard to get to every station on time: if you are late on one station, than you are probably [bad] for rest of the stops. If you are looking for a relaxing game, look no further than Train Simulator; if you are looking for a challenging game, look no further than Train Simulator!

Needs better documentation

This is an outstanding simulator. The sights and sounds are just fantastic. If you like trains, this is the equivalent of eating potato chips, you can't put it down. I have a P4 1.3 with an nVidia Gforce2 32 MB DDR video card. I have been running this sim at its highest resolution but get considerable hesitation. I can only wonder what people with lesser machines will get. Still in all, this a the best railroad simulator ever. It takes lots of effort and concentration to get a train moving 110 mph down to 30 as required or keeping your freight train from rolling backwards on an incline. I wish Microsoft would have added better documentation for the editor. I guess I will just have to wait for the Sybex book to be released.

Embarrassing gift - avoid the hassle

I gave this to my father, an avid train enthusiast, sight unseen - and do I ever regret it. His computing skills are, like many people, modest. Unfortunately I don't live in the same town and the installation problems he is having - incompatible hardware, etc. make it very embarrassing. I've suggested he call MS Tech Support but I already know how frustrating that will be for him. From other reviews it sounds like he doesn't have the latest hardware that will be needed. Also it needs DirectX 7 -- wouldn't you think that they include that on the installation CDROM?

I am going to suggest that he return the software and get the money back, to spend on a more appropriate gift.

Boring!

I love trains, and I thought this game would be a fascinating way to play with trains. But what I found is that it's tedious, repetivie and boring! All you do is drive trains back and forth, and sometimes stop to pickup and drop off passengers. When you're in a low-speed stretch of track, you just sit there for 20 min or so and wait to accelerate. Some of the scenarios are kind of fun, but overall you put up with 30 min of boredom for 30 seconds of fun.

GREAT GAME!!

I thought this game was very cool. If you are a train fan you will love this game... Most people that have it say that it is too simple. I have to admit, it is simple, but if you are a train fan, you will like it. From the Flying Scotsman to the Acela Express, this game truly breaks the barrier for any other simulator out there. I will have to say, BUY THIS GAME!!

Highly Disappointed

I was highly disappointed. First of all, it won't even install properly on my Dell laptop, running Win98. Later, whenever I launched it, it will come with error message and request to dial into MS web site for reporting errors, still giving me no clue how to launch it. I was so fed up that I decided to uninstall it. It took me many attempts over one day to uninstall it. I returned it the store for refund. No more games from big brother. My laptop is fine and running every other software perfectly. My biggest beef is that it will try to talk to MS web site without me knowing about contents of transfer. On top of that, MS charges for tech support.

Great game but a few bugs

Microsoft's Train Simulator has the potential to be a wonderful game. Straight out of the box I would probably give it two stars. It crashes every once in a while, and it doesn't have much variety. The physics of the locomotives and cars is also fairly poor. Luckily, the online trainsim community has fixed most of these issues. There are hundreds of new things to download for it to make it much more fun. There are physics updates, locomotives for every railroad you can think of, and new routes and activities.
The activity editor is about the only editor that is easy to use. You can make your own activity any way you want and put traffic in. The route editor is just plain horrible.
Overall, considering the available add-ons, I think this is a wonderful game that will occupy way too much of your time.

One of Microsoft's Best Simulators Ever!

This is a great simulator. Not only is it challenging, but enables you to have fun and experience the exitement of trains. This game will leave you and your family with many hours of fun train driving. I recommend this game for all ages.

A few kinks

As someone who lives right along the Northeast Corridor Amtrak line, this game is realistic. The graphics, the sounds and the animations are all true to life. But, as a new simulation, there are still a few bugs to work out. The words within the display itself are sometimes distorted and one or two of the pre-programmed activities froze up easily. However, the free tech support offered by Microsoft to fix these problems was very good. They even did a call back a few days later to see how I was enjoying the simulation. I recommend this for any train fancier. It is in the fine tradition of Microsoft simulations!
